Sindoor is commonly associated with marriage in the customs described here, while a bindi may be decorative, religious, or connected with marriage. The two can be worn together, and neither mark alone tells you someone’s relationship status with certainty.
Where are a bindi and sindoor worn?
The clearest distinction is placement. A bindi sits on the forehead. Sindoor is vermilion traditionally placed in the parting of the hair. The Pitt Rivers Museum describes sindur as red powder applied to the hair parting and as one of several traditional signs associated with a married woman (Pitt Rivers Museum).

A bindi can be a dot or a more elaborate decorative mark. India’s National Portal describes Ballia’s bindi, or tikuli, as an ornamental handicraft worn on the forehead, with varied designs, colours, and shapes (National Portal of India).
What do they commonly mean?
Bindi: adornment and more
A bindi may be worn for adornment, religious reasons, or in connection with marital custom. Pew Research Center describes it as a decorative forehead mark that has traditionally been associated with venerating an energy center or representing the “third eye,” while also noting its use as adornment and as a sign of marriage (Pew Research Center, 2021). Because its uses vary, seeing a bindi does not establish that someone is married.

Sindoor: a customary association with marriage
Sindoor is commonly associated with marriage in the customs documented by the sources. A Tribal Heritage Repository entry describing a Warli woman notes sindoor in the hair parting and a bindi on her forehead; it identifies the sindoor in that specific representation as signifying marriage (Tribal Heritage Repository). This example illustrates that the marks are distinct and can be worn together, but it should not be treated as a universal rule for every community or individual.
When is each worn?
Bindi
There is no single schedule that applies to everyone. A person may wear a bindi as everyday adornment, for a religious or ceremonial occasion, or according to personal or marital custom. Its form and significance depend on the wearer and context.

Sindoor
In the customs described by the sources, married women commonly wear sindoor. One specific ceremonial example is Sindoor Khela: India’s Ministry of Tourism describes it as a ritual performed by married women on the last day of Durga Puja while bidding farewell to the goddess Durga (Ministry of Tourism). That festival practice does not mean everyone wears sindoor in the same way or on the same occasions.

Pew Research Center’s 2021 report, based on its 2019 survey in India, found that 84% of Hindu women and 78% of Buddhist women said they generally wear a bindi. The reported figures were 18% for Muslim women, 22% for Christian women, and 29% for Sikh women. These are self-reported results from that survey—not current global rates or a way to infer an individual’s religion or habits. Pew also reported regional variation, including lower bindi use among Hindu women in the Northeast than elsewhere in India; the survey did not include enough Jain interviews for separate analysis (Pew Research Center, 2021).

How to interpret the difference respectfully
- Use placement to distinguish the terms: forehead for bindi, hair parting for sindoor.
- Describe marriage as a common association of sindoor in particular documented customs, not as a universal rule for all women or communities.
- Do not infer someone’s marital status from a bindi alone; the mark has broader uses and meanings.
- When discussing a specific person or community, follow that person’s explanation or the community’s known practice rather than assuming one meaning fits everyone.
