How the Solar System Compares With Other Planetary Systems

The Solar System is one planetary architecture among many. Compare its planets, orbital layout, and spacing with patterns found in observed exoplanet systems.

Other planetary systems do not follow one standard blueprint. The Solar System has eight planets spread across a broad range of distances, while many systems discovered by Kepler contain several planets packed close to their star. Comparing them works best across separate features—planet count, sizes, spacing, and inner-versus-outer layout—rather than asking whether another system is simply “like ours.”

What counts as a planetary system?

A planetary system is a star and the non-stellar objects that orbit it. Our system includes the Sun, eight planets, their moons, and smaller bodies such as asteroids and comets. NASA notes that all eight planets orbit the Sun in the same direction and in nearly the same plane, an orderly pattern consistent with formation from a flattened cloud of gas and dust. NASA Science’s overview of planetary systems describes this baseline and the broader meaning of the term.

How does our solar system compare to other planetary systems?

The clearest difference in observed systems is the range of possible architectures. Kepler found multi-planet systems with as many as eight planets orbiting close to their host stars—planets arranged on a much tighter scale than the Solar System’s spread. That discovery showed that our configuration is not the only way to arrange planets. NASA’s account of Kepler’s legacy highlights these compact systems.

There is no single measurement that captures how similar two systems are. A system can have a comparable number of planets but different planet sizes, or similar-sized planets arranged much closer to their star. Useful comparisons separate these dimensions:

  • Multiplicity: how many planets are known to orbit the star.
  • Size pattern: whether neighboring planets are similar in size or differ substantially.
  • Compactness: how tightly the planets orbit relative to the star.
  • Spacing: whether the intervals between neighboring orbits follow a regular pattern.
  • Architecture: how planets are organized across inner and outer regions, including their dynamical arrangement.

Are other solar systems like ours?

Some observed multi-planet systems share a recognizable pattern: neighboring planets tend to be similar in size and regularly spaced. This arrangement is often called “peas in a pod.” A 2018 NASA Astrobiology feature described the California-Kepler Survey’s analysis of 909 planets in 355 multi-planet systems, drawn from a broader set of 1,305 stars and 2,025 transiting planets. Astronomer Lauren Weiss, quoted in the feature, put the observed size pattern this way: “The planets in each system seemed to know about the sizes of the neighbors,” Weiss said. The phrase describes a statistical pattern in the surveyed systems, not literal communication between planets or a rule that every system follows. NASA Astrobiology’s feature on the architecture of solar systems gives that survey context.

A 2025 paper, “Architecture Classification for Extrasolar Planetary Systems,” treats “peas-in-a-pod” as one useful pattern, not a label for every multi-planet system. Its authors note that definitions have varied and that exceptions should not be forced into the category. The paper proposes broader categories that distinguish inner and outer regions and further divide inner architectures by dynamical class. In the paper’s account, the confirmed exoplanet sample included nearly 6,000 planets, with more than 300 systems containing at least three planets. Those figures describe the paper’s sample context, not a live count of discoveries. The NASA Technical Reports Server record for the 2025 classification paper summarizes its framework.

Is our solar system unusual?

The sources establish that planetary systems vary and that compact arrangements are common among systems found by Kepler. They do not establish that the Solar System is unique, rare, or typical among all planetary systems. Observations are shaped by detection: for example, NASA’s Kepler legacy account emphasizes planets orbiting close to their stars, while the 2025 classification paper organizes the confirmed planets available to its authors. These observed systems are not a complete census of every architecture in the galaxy.

How different architectures form remains an open question. NASA notes that researchers are still investigating whether compact planets formed close to their stars or migrated inward from farther away. Formation and migration are possible lines of inquiry, not settled explanations for every observed system.

How to read comparisons fairly

When a report says one system resembles another, check what it actually compares. “Similar” might refer to planet sizes, number of known planets, orbital spacing, compactness, or the overall inner-and-outer arrangement. A match on one dimension does not imply a match on all the others. It also matters whether the statement concerns confirmed, observed systems or all systems in nature: current discoveries reveal a diverse set of architectures, but they do not yet provide a complete inventory.
