Binance Futures uses Mark Price—not the latest traded Last Price—to calculate unrealized profit and loss and to trigger liquidation. A position can therefore be liquidated even when the candle or last trade on your chart never touched the displayed liquidation level. The actual threshold depends on contract type, margin mode, position size, maintenance-margin tier, account collateral, funding deductions and other open positions.
What is Binance Futures Mark Price?
Mark Price is Binance Futures’ reference value for estimating a contract’s fair market price. Binance calculates it from external spot-market prices and futures funding or basis data rather than simply taking the most recent futures trade.

Last Price is the price of the latest transaction executed on the Binance futures order book. Binance uses Last Price for realized profit and loss. Mark Price is used for unrealized profit and loss, liquidation calculations and the liquidation engine.

Binance says this design is intended “to avoid unnecessary liquidations and to combat market manipulation.” A brief, abnormal trade can move Last Price without representing the broader market. Using a reference price helps prevent one isolated transaction from immediately liquidating otherwise healthy positions.

Is liquidation based on Mark Price or Last Price?
Liquidation is based on Mark Price. The process starts when the position’s Mark Price reaches its liquidation threshold and the collateral available to support the position is no longer sufficient to meet maintenance-margin requirements.
The simplified condition is that initial collateral, realized PnL and unrealized PnL fall below the required maintenance margin. Because unrealized PnL is calculated with Mark Price, the liquidation decision follows Mark Price as well.
Leverage alone does not determine the final threshold. It changes the initial margin and often allows a larger position, but the liquidation level also reflects the maintenance-margin tier, entry price, position size, wallet balance, current Mark Price, funding deductions and account-wide positions in Cross Margin.
Why can liquidation happen when the candle never touched my liquidation price?
The visible candle may be based on Last Price, while Binance’s liquidation engine monitors Mark Price. If Mark Price briefly crosses the threshold, liquidation can begin even though no Last Price trade prints at that level.
This can occur during rapid volatility, when the reference index moves faster than the futures order book, or when the difference between the futures contract and spot markets changes. A chart configured to show Last Price can therefore appear not to have reached liquidation while the Mark Price did.

How to investigate a disputed liquidation
- Check which price type your chart displays. Compare Last Price with the Mark Price line or Mark Price value in the futures interface.
- Open the position and order history around the liquidation timestamp. Note the Mark Price, position size, margin mode and maintenance-margin tier.
- Check funding payments and other balance changes immediately before the event. A deduction from position margin can move the threshold.
- Compare the initially displayed liquidation price with the liquidation-history record. Binance warns that the recorded price can differ when Mark Price moves rapidly.
How is Binance liquidation price calculated?
There is no single universal liquidation-price equation for every Binance Futures position. Binance’s USDⓈ-M methodology changes according to margin mode and position configuration. The calculation can include:
- Wallet balance and margin allocated to the position
- Position size, notional value, side and entry price
- Maintenance-margin rate and maintenance amount for the applicable risk tier
- Unrealized PnL and maintenance requirements of other contracts in Cross Margin
- The latest Mark Price
- Funding deductions and other account balance changes where applicable
- Whether the account uses One-way Mode or Hedge Mode
Maintenance-margin tiers
Maintenance margin is tiered rather than one fixed percentage for every position. Binance describes the calculation as position notional multiplied by the maintenance-margin rate for that tier, minus the maintenance amount assigned to the tier.
As notional value increases, a position can move into a higher risk tier with a higher maintenance-margin rate. A calculation that uses the wrong tier can produce a materially incorrect liquidation price. If the calculated notional crosses a tier boundary, recalculate with the inputs for the new tier.
Why a universal formula is unsafe
A formula copied from an unrelated contract or margin mode can be wrong because USDⓈ-M and COIN-M contracts use different documentation, and perpetual and quarterly contracts do not necessarily share the same Mark Price methodology. A meaningful estimate must identify the contract family, settlement asset, margin mode, position mode, size, entry price, current Mark Price and risk tier.
How do Cross Margin and Isolated Margin change liquidation risk?
| Feature | Cross Margin | Isolated Margin |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral scope | Uses eligible account balance across the relevant Cross Margin positions | Uses only margin assigned to the isolated position |
| Other positions and PnL | Wallet balance, other positions and their unrealized PnL can affect the threshold | Cross-account inputs identified in Binance’s formula are set to zero; the position is evaluated using its allocated margin |
| Loss containment | One position can draw on shared collateral, potentially protecting it longer but exposing more account equity | Loss is generally limited to the allocated margin, although the position can liquidate sooner |
| Liquidation-price stability | Can move as account balance, other PnL and positions change | Usually tied more directly to the position’s own margin, size and entry price |
In Cross Margin, a profitable position can increase available collateral while a losing position or a balance withdrawal can reduce it. The displayed liquidation price can therefore change as the rest of the account changes.

In Isolated Margin, adding or removing margin assigned to the position changes its liquidation risk without changing the collateral of unrelated positions. Isolated margin is not a guarantee against liquidation; it simply narrows the collateral pool used for that position.

Hedge Mode adds another distinction. Binance states that long and short positions for the same symbol share the same liquidation price in Cross Margin. In Isolated Margin, the long and short sides can have different liquidation prices because each side can have separately allocated margin and different position inputs.
How is Mark Price built?
The exact methodology depends on the contract family and whether the contract is perpetual or quarterly. Do not apply a COIN-M formula to a USDⓈ-M contract or assume that a perpetual contract uses the same inputs as a quarterly contract.
COIN-M contracts
Binance’s COIN-M explanation identifies two principal components: a Price Index aggregated from major spot exchanges and a moving-average basis used to smooth the difference between futures and spot markets. For COIN-M perpetual contracts, the published method uses a median of two calculated prices and the contract price.
The COIN-M methodology described by Binance uses a 30-second moving-average basis built from 30 one-second data points. That smoothing window is a feature of the stated methodology, not a guarantee that Mark Price cannot move sharply.

USDⓈ-M data availability
Binance’s USDⓈ-M Mark Price documentation states that an exchange’s weight in the weighted Price Index may be set to zero if that exchange is unavailable or has not updated trading data within the previous five minutes. This means the reference calculation can adapt when a constituent venue stops supplying current data.
Because constituent prices, basis and funding inputs can change, Mark Price can move even when the Binance futures order book has few or no trades at the same level.
Why can the displayed liquidation price differ from the liquidation-history price?
The liquidation price shown while a position is open is an estimate based on the account and market state at that moment. Binance warns that the price recorded in Liquidation History can differ from the initially displayed value.
During extreme volatility, Mark Price can jump through the threshold before the liquidation process completes. The history entry may reflect the Mark Price observed when the liquidation operation occurred rather than the earlier estimate displayed in the position panel. This difference does not mean Binance switched to Last Price; it reflects a rapidly changing Mark Price and account state.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat does the margin ratio mean?
Binance describes a margin-ratio guideline of keeping the ratio below 80% as a risk-control measure. Its documentation describes liquidation at a margin ratio of 100%. These are operational figures from Binance’s documentation, updated in 2026, and they can change with product rules or jurisdiction.
Best Value
The ratio can rise because Mark Price moves against the position, maintenance requirements increase when notional enters a higher tier, funding is deducted, or other Cross Margin positions lose value. Treat 80% as a warning level rather than a safe guarantee: fast markets can move from a warning state to liquidation before you can add collateral or close manually.
Can funding fees move my liquidation price?
Yes. Funding payments are separate from the liquidation event, but they can change the amount of collateral supporting a position. Binance says that when account balance is insufficient, funding fees may be deducted from position margin, which can move the liquidation price closer to the current Mark Price.
Funding information also contributes to the Mark Price methodology. A funding payment therefore can affect risk in two ways: the payment changes available margin, while funding or basis inputs help determine the reference price used for unrealized PnL and liquidation.
What happens after Binance starts liquidation?
Binance calls its process Smart Liquidation. It is designed to reduce the deficit where possible instead of automatically closing the entire position at once.
- Relevant orders are canceled. Open orders that could reserve or consume margin are removed.
- Binance attempts a reduction. The system can submit one large Immediate-or-Cancel order to reduce the position and address the margin shortfall.
- The position may be saved partially. If the remaining assets satisfy maintenance requirements after realized losses and the liquidation-clearance fee, the process can stop without fully closing the position.
- A residual deficit becomes a Bankrupt Position. If the order cannot be filled fully or the remaining position still fails maintenance requirements, the unresolved position can enter the bankrupt state.
- The Insurance Fund absorbs losses where possible. Binance’s Futures Insurance Fund takes over bankrupt positions to the extent it can cover associated losses.
- ADL can follow. If the Insurance Fund is insufficient, the matching engine may use Auto-Deleveraging to liquidate opposing non-bankrupt positions.
Binance also states that automated negative-balance clearance is performed every ten minutes for accounts meeting its stated eligibility conditions. That schedule is an operational rule, not a promise that every account or every deficit receives the same treatment.
How can traders reduce the chance of liquidation?
- Use the Mark Price display when setting alerts and evaluating liquidation distance, not only the Last Price candle.
- Keep the margin ratio comfortably below Binance’s 80% guideline, leaving room for rapid Mark Price movement.
- Reduce position size when a larger notional would move the position into a higher maintenance-margin tier.
- Understand whether Cross or Isolated Margin is appropriate. Cross Margin shares collateral; Isolated Margin limits the collateral assigned to one position.
- Monitor funding times and projected funding payments, especially when the account has little excess margin.
- In Cross Margin, review every open position because another position’s unrealized loss can reduce available collateral.
- Check the current contract specification, leverage limits, maintenance-margin table and liquidation-clearance fee before opening a position.
- Do not rely on the initially displayed liquidation price as a fixed guarantee; it changes with Mark Price, margin and account conditions.
USDⓈ-M, COIN-M and contract-type differences
| Comparison | What changes | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| USDⓈ-M vs. COIN-M | Settlement asset, risk tables and published calculation methodology | A formula or tier from one family may not apply to the other |
| Perpetual vs. quarterly | Mark Price and basis methodology | Funding and basis treatment can differ |
| Cross vs. Isolated | Account collateral and other-position inputs | The same size and entry price can produce different thresholds |
| One-way vs. Hedge Mode | How long and short positions are represented in the calculation | Hedge positions can share or have separate liquidation prices depending on margin mode |
What information should you verify before relying on a liquidation estimate?
Binance’s numbers and rules can change without notice. Before trading, verify the live contract specification and in-product calculator for the exact symbol and account:
- Contract family and settlement asset
- Perpetual or quarterly designation
- Margin mode and position mode
- Leverage and notional risk tier
- Maintenance-margin rate and maintenance amount
- Current Mark Price and Price Index status
- Funding rate, next funding time and available balance
- Liquidation-clearance fee and applicable jurisdictional terms
These mechanics explain how liquidation works; they are not financial, legal or investment advice. A live calculator using the current contract rules is more reliable than a static equation copied from another symbol or date.
