Start by checking whether you actually have a released build. Steam’s 2026 listing for Billy the Hero Demo from JOJOJOJOsoft currently says “Coming soon” and “This item is not yet available.” If the demo has not been released to your account or region, there is no local crash to repair. If an installed build does start and then fails, the safest approach is to classify the symptom, confirm the published requirements, change one variable at a time, and report reproducible evidence.
The official page does not publish a Billy-specific crash fix, black-screen workaround, launch option, renderer setting, driver recommendation, controller-support statement, Steam Input profile, or developer troubleshooting guide. The procedures below are therefore general Steam and Windows diagnostics, clearly separated from anything verified by JOJOJOJOsoft.

Confirm that the demo is available to your Steam account
Open the current Steam store page and your Library entry for Billy the Hero Demo by JOJOJOJOsoft. The official listing is marked “Coming soon” and states that the item is not yet available. That status matters more than any local setting: a title that has not been released, or has not reached your region, cannot be repaired by reinstalling drivers or changing launch options.

If there is no Install or Play button
Do not treat the absence of an installable build as a crash. Record the exact wording shown by Steam, the account and region in which you checked, and the date. Wait for the official release status to change rather than downloading an executable from an unverified source. A third-party copy can introduce separate compatibility and security problems that are unrelated to the Steam demo.
If Steam shows the demo in your Library
Allow any pending download or update to finish, then launch from the current Library entry rather than an old desktop shortcut. If the entry remains unavailable after Steam restarts, capture the store and Library status before contacting JOJOJOJOsoft; that information can distinguish a release or entitlement issue from a local launch failure.
What the official documentation does—and does not—say
Steam is the authoritative source identified for the demo’s availability, description, and system requirements. Its listing does not provide a crash log location, black-screen remedy, controller compatibility list, Steam Input configuration, renderer switch, launch flag, or recommended graphics driver. Consequently, no particular key combination, driver version, resolution, or controller model can be described as a verified Billy the Hero fix.
General troubleshooting can still be useful for an installed build, but label the result accurately. “Verifying files solved my launch problem” describes an individual diagnostic result; it does not establish a guaranteed fix for every player. Likewise, a setting that works on one computer should be tested on another before anyone treats it as a compatibility rule.
Check the computer against Steam’s published requirements
Before changing display or input settings, record the Windows edition and whether it is 64-bit, the processor model, installed memory, graphics adapter, monitor arrangement, and available storage. The memory and storage figures above are reproduced exactly as displayed by Steam. They are unusually small for a modern Windows game, so treat them as listing values rather than proof that any computer with that amount of free memory or disk space will perform well. Steam publishes no frame-rate target, benchmark, crash-rate statistic, or controller-compatibility percentage for this demo.

Classify the failure before you change anything
“It crashes” can describe several different failure points. Keep one reproducible sequence for each symptom and write down what appears on screen, whether a process is visible, and whether sound continues. A precise classification prevents unrelated fixes from being mixed together.

Clicking Play does nothing
Note whether Steam changes the button to Stop, whether a game process appears briefly in Task Manager, and whether an error notification is shown. If none of these occurs, record the time and confirm that no download or update is pending. This is a launch or entitlement symptom, not evidence of a graphics failure.
A process appears and exits
Describe how long the process remains active and whether Windows displays an application-error dialog. Capture the exact error text, including any module name or code. Do not paraphrase it; a literal message gives JOJOJOJOsoft more useful information than “it closes immediately.”
The window stays black
Check whether audio plays behind the image, whether the pointer changes, whether Alt-Tab switches to another window, and whether the display eventually returns to the desktop. Record fullscreen or windowed mode, resolution, monitor count, and active overlays before testing a change.
The game crashes after a scene or menu loads
Write down the last reproducible action: opening a menu, ending a turn, loading a save, or reaching a particular cutscene. A crash tied to one scene is a different report from a crash during every launch, even if the visible result is the same.

Record the controller model, whether it is wired or wireless, how it is connected, whether Steam detects it, and the exact point at which input stops responding. Also test whether the problem affects menus, gameplay, or only a particular screen.

Run low-risk Steam checks first
These checks are ordinary Steam procedures, not fixes documented specifically for Billy the Hero. Perform them in order and retest the same reproduction step after each one so you know which change, if any, altered the result.
- Restart Steam completely. Exit Steam from its menu, confirm that it is no longer running, reopen it, and launch from the Library page. This refreshes the client state without changing game files.
- Restart Windows. A reboot clears a stuck process and reloads display and input drivers. After signing back in, avoid starting overlays or remapping utilities until the test is complete.
- Finish pending updates. On the demo’s Library page, wait for Steam to complete any queued download or update. Retest only after the progress indicator has stopped.
- Verify installed files. In Steam, open Library, right-click the demo, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files (the label can vary slightly by client version). Let the process finish, allow Steam to reacquire any files it reports, and then repeat the original launch sequence.
- Use the current Library entry. Remove ambiguity from an outdated shortcut by selecting the game directly in Steam. If the Library entry itself is unavailable, return to the release-status check rather than treating a shortcut failure as a game crash.
- Keep a change log. Write down the test time, the one change made, and the resulting symptom. Without that record, it is easy to attribute an improvement to the wrong setting.
Diagnose a black screen without guessing at a magic setting
The official listing supplies no Billy-specific resolution, renderer, driver, or launch flag. You can still isolate common display conflicts by changing one variable at a time.
Separate an image problem from a complete launch failure
Start the demo and wait the same amount of time on each attempt. If audio continues while the picture is black, the process may be running and the problem is more likely related to display mode, monitor selection, or an overlay. If the process exits and Steam returns to Play, treat it as a crash instead. If Alt-Tab works, note which window receives focus; if it does not, record that as well.

Record the current mode and resolution before changing them. If the game exposes an in-game display menu, switch only the mode, apply it, and retest. If the menu is inaccessible, use the operating system’s normal window-management controls rather than inventing an undocumented launch flag. A result is meaningful only when you can state which mode was used and whether the symptom changed.
Remove display variables
For one test, disconnect or disable the secondary monitor and use a single display. On another test, close screen-recording tools, chat overlays, performance counters, and other software that draws over games. Do not disable several categories at once: a single-monitor test with overlays still active answers a different question from a multi-monitor test with overlays disabled.
Record audio and focus behavior
Note whether music, effects, or menu sounds are audible, whether the cursor is visible, and whether clicking the window changes anything. These observations help JOJOJOJOsoft distinguish a rendered black frame from a process that never reached the title screen. They do not, by themselves, prove a particular driver or API is responsible.

Investigate crashes while preserving evidence
Once you have confirmed that the demo is installed and the files have been checked, repeat the shortest sequence that causes the crash. Avoid applying several speculative fixes before you can reproduce it; doing so may erase the conditions needed to diagnose the problem.
Capture the exact Windows message
If Windows reports that the application stopped working, copy the complete text and any error code. Include the time of the failure and whether Steam remained open. If there is no dialog, state that explicitly and describe whether the process disappeared, froze, or returned to the desktop.
Record the machine and display context
Include the Windows version and 64-bit status, CPU, installed RAM, GPU, monitor count, selected display mode, and whether an overlay was active. Compare those details with Steam’s minimum and recommended rows rather than saying only that the computer is “powerful enough.”
Do not present undocumented launch options as official remedies
Steam’s listing does not name a safe mode, DirectX switch, Vulkan switch, renderer selector, compatibility flag, or crash-log path for this demo. A command copied from another game can prevent the program from starting or make the original symptom harder to reproduce. If you experiment with a setting, label it as an unverified diagnostic test and be prepared to remove it before reporting the issue.
Use external system changes cautiously
The listing gives no Billy-specific driver version or Windows compatibility setting. Keep a note of any operating-system, driver, antivirus, or overlay change made during testing, and revert one change at a time if the symptom becomes less clear. The goal is a repeatable comparison, not a collection of unrelated tweaks.
Work through controller problems methodically
Because the official page does not state controller support or name a compatible model, start by establishing whether Steam and Windows can see the device before assuming the game is ignoring it.
- Connect one controller before launch. Disconnect extra gamepads, wheels, virtual devices, and remappers. A single physical device makes the test unambiguous.
- Check Steam detection. Open Steam’s controller settings and confirm that the device appears. Record whether it is connected by USB, Bluetooth, or another wireless receiver.
- Launch with keyboard and mouse available. Test the title screen and menus with the keyboard and mouse, then test the controller without disconnecting it. This distinguishes a general launch failure from an input-only failure.
- Test focus changes. If the controller works until you Alt-Tab or click another window, record that exact sequence. Focus-related behavior is different from a device that is never recognized.
- Remove remapping layers for one comparison. Close third-party remappers and overlays, then repeat the same menu action. Re-enable them only after the baseline test is documented.
- Report the result precisely. State the controller model, connection type, Windows version, Steam detection result, and whether buttons respond in menus, gameplay, both, or neither.
Do not promise that a particular controller, Steam Input profile, or remapping layout will work: none is identified by the official listing. If keyboard and mouse operate normally while one controller fails, preserve that comparison in your report instead of describing the whole demo as unplayable.
Compare two computers or input setups as a controlled experiment
If another computer or controller is available, change one axis at a time. These comparisons can reveal a local conflict, but they are diagnostic experiments, not published Billy the Hero compatibility results.

Escalate to JOJOJOJOsoft with a reproducible report

- Steam account region and the exact release or availability text shown.
- Demo version or update state, if Steam displays one.
- Windows edition, 64-bit status, CPU, installed RAM, GPU, and available storage.
- Monitor count, resolution, fullscreen or windowed mode, and active overlays.
- Controller model and connection method, if input is involved.
- The exact error text, or a statement that no message appeared.
- A numbered reproduction sequence, including the last screen or action before the failure.
- What changed after restarting Steam, restarting Windows, and verifying files.
Attach screenshots or a short recording only if the support channel accepts them, and remove personal information from captures. Do not claim that a community suggestion is an official fix unless JOJOJOJOsoft confirms it.
Know the current limits and content warnings
The listing does not establish how often crashes, black screens, or controller failures occur. It also does not publish a compatibility percentage, benchmark, or guaranteed workaround. Treat every successful local experiment as evidence about that particular computer and setup, not as a universal solution.
Steam identifies mature material in the demo, including suicide imagery in the opening cutscene, tobacco use, and references to alcohol. The dark-fantasy setting and stylized violence may also be unsuitable for some players. This content information is separate from technical troubleshooting, but it is worth checking before someone launches the approximately 30-minute Episode 0.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop changing settings when the demo is still marked unavailable, when you cannot reproduce the failure consistently, or when each test alters several variables at once.
