On an iPhone, rotate the phone to landscape for a larger keyboard in many apps. On Android, check whether Gboard offers a keyboard-height or resize control; if it does not, display magnification can make keys easier to see without changing the keyboard’s layout.

Make the keyboard bigger on iPhone
Try landscape first
- Open an app with a text field, such as Messages, Notes, Mail, or Safari.
- Rotate the iPhone to landscape while the keyboard is open. Apple says the onscreen keyboard is larger in many apps in this orientation. The effect depends on the app; landscape is not a universal keyboard-size setting. See Apple’s iPhone keyboard accessibility settings guide.
Make interface elements or text larger
For a broader increase in interface size, open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Display Zoom. Apple describes Display Zoom as enlarging text and interface elements such as icons and buttons. It does not provide a separate, guaranteed key-layout size control for every keyboard.

To enlarge text in supported apps, use Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Larger Text. This changes text size, not a documented keyboard-height setting. Apple explains these options in Make text easier to read on iPhone.

iPhone’s Settings > Accessibility > Zoom magnifies screen content. Apple documents zoom-region choices and Smart Typing, but Zoom is a visibility aid, not a setting that permanently resizes the keyboard layout. See Apple’s iPhone screen-zoom guide.

Make the keyboard bigger on Android with Gboard
Gboard may offer a keyboard-height or resize control, but the steps below come from a Google Android Community answer, not an official Gboard resizing guide. Google cautions that community posts may not be verified or up to date, so your menus may differ or the controls may be absent.
Look for Keyboard height
- Open an app with a text field and bring up Gboard.
- Open Gboard’s toolbar settings, then select Preferences.
- Under Layout, look for Keyboard height and choose a taller option if it appears.
Look for Resize
If your Gboard toolbar has a four-square icon, tap it and check for Resize. If available, drag a handle to adjust the keyboard, then confirm. The exact control and confirmation step can vary. These community instructions are described in Google’s Android Community thread about enlarging the keypad.

If neither control appears, do not assume that changing emoji size will enlarge letter keys. Google’s retrieved Gboard help for keyboard theme, sound, and vibration covers appearance, sound, vibration, and emoji size, but does not document a key-height adjustment.
Magnify the Android keyboard when changing its layout is not an option
On devices running Android 16 and later, Google documents Magnify keyboard within full-screen magnification. It zooms the keyboard view so keys and emojis are easier to find; it is different from increasing the keyboard’s underlying layout height. Android’s Display size setting can enlarge interface elements more broadly, while Font size changes text. Font-size settings do not affect every app, and larger display elements can leave less content visible at once. See Google’s guide to Android text and display settings.

If the keyboard still feels too small
- On iPhone: Try landscape in another typing app; keyboard behavior is app-dependent. Use Display Zoom or screen Zoom only if a broader interface change or magnified view suits your needs.
- On Android: Check Gboard’s Preferences and toolbar for height or resize controls, keeping in mind that they may not exist on your device or version. For Android 16 and later, try Magnify keyboard if you need to see keys more clearly rather than change the layout.
- Check the trade-off: Display-size changes and magnification can affect or obscure surrounding screen content. A font-size change may not affect the keyboard or every app.
