How to Reset a Nintendo Switch: Force Restart, Keep Saves, or Erase Data

A forced shutdown is not a factory reset. Choose the right Nintendo Switch reset, understand what happens to saves and microSD software, and follow the correct steps for Switch 2.

Choose the reset that matches the problem: hold POWER for 12 seconds to shut down a frozen Switch, use Maintenance Mode to initialize a Switch-family console while keeping save data, or perform a full initialization to erase console data before transferring it. These actions are different, and only the last one is a factory-style wipe.

Which kind of reset do you need?

Action When to use it Effect on console data microSD software
Forced shutdown The console is unresponsive or will not turn off normally Does not initialize the console or erase data No reset-related change
Initialize without deleting save data Troubleshooting a Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED while retaining user information Keeps save data, screenshots, and user information Software stored on the card becomes unusable
Full initialization Erasing the console before selling or giving it away Deletes console-memory software, save data, screenshots, and user information; unlinks Nintendo Accounts Software becomes unusable, though card data is not deleted; screenshots are excepted

The steps below are for Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED unless noted. Switch 2 uses Recovery Mode and a different menu option.

Force a frozen Switch to shut down

If the console still responds, hold POWER for at least three seconds, select Power Options, then choose Turn Off. If it does not respond, hold POWER for 12 seconds to force it off. This is a shutdown, not a factory reset; it does not perform either initialization.

If freezing continues to affect gameplay after troubleshooting, Nintendo advises sending the console in for service. See Nintendo’s frozen-console troubleshooting instructions.

Initialize without deleting save data on Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED

Nintendo’s Maintenance Mode option retains save data, screenshots, and user information. Software stored on a microSD card becomes unusable after this process, but Nintendo says it can be downloaded again with the Nintendo Account that purchased it. This option is for troubleshooting, not for preparing a console that someone else will use.

  1. Make sure the console is fully powered off, not in Sleep Mode. If it is unresponsive, hold POWER for 12 seconds to force it off.
  2. With the console off, press and hold volume up (+) and volume down (-), then press POWER. Keep holding both volume buttons until Maintenance Mode appears.
  3. Select Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data. Enter the Parental Control PIN if prompted.
  4. Read the confirmation screen, select Next, then confirm Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data.

For Nintendo’s official procedure, see How to Initialize Nintendo Switch Without Deleting Save Data.

What full initialization erases

Full initialization deletes data in the console’s memory, including software, save data, screenshots, and user information. Nintendo Accounts linked to the console are unlinked, but the accounts themselves are not deleted. Nintendo’s article on what is lost after initializing Nintendo Switch explains the consequences. Follow Nintendo’s instructions there rather than relying on an improvised button sequence.

Data on a microSD card is not deleted, but software on it becomes unusable after initialization; screenshots are excepted. A linked Nintendo Account can be used to redownload eligible purchases and downloadable content.

Save recovery is not guaranteed for every game

If a Save Data Cloud backup exists, Nintendo says it can be downloaded after creating a new user and linking the Nintendo Account. Cloud backup applies only to games that support the feature and requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Check Nintendo’s save-data troubleshooting guidance; do not assume every game’s progress is backed up.

Switch 2 uses Recovery Mode

Do not follow the Switch-family Maintenance Mode menu wording on Switch 2. With Switch 2 fully powered off, hold volume up and volume down while pressing POWER, and keep holding both volume buttons until Recovery Mode appears. The relevant option is Restore Settings (Keep User Data); a Parental Control PIN may be requested. Use Nintendo’s Switch 2 Recovery Mode instructions for the exact procedure.
