The best headphones for music production depend on the job: choose a closed-back pair to limit microphone bleed while tracking, or an open-back pair for mixing in a quiet room. MusicRadar’s 2026 guide, which says it tested 15 pairs, names five standouts for different uses—not a universal ranking. Here’s what each pick offers and what to check before choosing.

Sennheiser HD 490 Pro: open-back all-rounder for mixing
MusicRadar selects the HD 490 Pro as its best overall option, praising its balance, comfort, and ability to reveal detail in complex mixes. It lists a 5 Hz–36 kHz frequency response, 130-ohm impedance, and 260 g weight. Reviewer Jon Musgrave describes its sound as “smooth and balanced and refreshingly unlike many headphones one hears.”
#1 Best Overall
- Advanced build quality and engineering; Designed for studio tracking and mixing
- 40 mm drivers with rare earth magnets and copper clad aluminum wire voice coils
- Tuned for enhanced low frequency performance
- Circumaural design contours around the ears for excellent sound isolation in loud environments
- Convenient single side cable exit
Its open-back construction makes it a poor default for recording near a live microphone: sound can leak from the earcups into the recording. Choose it when the room is quiet and leakage is not a concern, rather than as a one-pair solution for every tracking situation.
Sony MDR-7506: closed-back budget workhorse
MusicRadar’s budget pick is closed-back, 63 ohms, and 229 g. The reviewer notes a pronounced midrange and high-frequency emphasis rather than a flat overall response. That character can be useful once familiar, but it can also skew tonal decisions; check mixes on speakers or familiar playback devices before settling EQ or balance.
The closed design suits tracking and noisy rooms better than an open-back pair. MusicRadar flags its fixed coiled cable and limited headband cushioning as trade-offs, especially for long sessions or users who prefer a replaceable cable.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: flexible closed-back starter
MusicRadar recommends the ATH-M50x for beginners and lists it at 38 ohms and 285 g. It considers the sound sufficiently balanced for mixing if you account for the low and high end rather than treating the headphones as a neutral reference.
Audio-Technica specifies 45 mm drivers, isolation pads, earcups that swivel 90 degrees, three interchangeable cables, a carrying pouch, and a screw-on 1/4-inch adapter. The company positions the model for tracking, mixing, DJ monitoring, and personal listening. See the manufacturer’s ATH-M50x product page for its current package details.
HEDD HEDDphone Two: mastering-oriented open-back option
MusicRadar names the HEDDphone Two its mastering pick, describing a balanced sound and comfortable listening. Its listed specifications are open-back, 41 ohms, and 495 g. That weight is substantial compared with the other models here, and the open cups leak sound, so consider fit over extended sessions and avoid using it beside a live microphone.

- Closed ear design provides comfort and outstanding reduction of external noises
- 9.8 foot cord ends in gold plated plug and it is not detachable; 1/4 inch adapter included
- Folds up for storage or travel in provided soft case
- Frequency Response: 10 Hertz to 20 kilohertz
This is the specialist choice in the group, not an automatic upgrade for every producer. Its mastering role is MusicRadar’s category judgment; whether it suits your room, comfort needs, and budget is a separate decision.
beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X: closed-back tracking and monitoring
MusicRadar recommends the DT 770 Pro X for instrument and vocal tracking, citing isolation and tonal balance. Its guide lists 48 ohms and 350 g. Reviewer Dave Clews says its passive noise reduction helps maintain focus while preventing backing-track bleed onto microphones.
Do not confuse the Pro X’s 48-ohm specification with the impedance variants available in the classic DT 770 PRO range. beyerdynamic describes the classic DT 770 PRO as its closed-back studio model; the manufacturer’s DT 770 PRO page refers to that model, not a specification sheet for the Pro X.
Rank #4
- Critically acclaimed sonic performance praised by top audio engineers and pro audio reviewers
- Proprietary 45 millimeter large aperture drivers with rare earth magnets and copper clad aluminum wire voice coils
- Exceptional clarity throughout an extended frequency range, with deep, accurate bass response
- Circumaural design contours around the ears for excellent sound isolation in loud environments

Choose based on how you work
For vocal or instrument tracking
Start with closed-back headphones when a microphone is open nearby. Their isolation can reduce outside noise reaching your ears, and their lower sound leakage can reduce backing-track bleed into the microphone. The ATH-M50x and DT 770 family are suitable examples in the cited manufacturer and reviewer descriptions. Isolation is not absolute, so keep playback at a sensible level and check for bleed in the recording.
For mixing in a quiet room
Open-back headphones are commonly chosen for their spatial presentation and a more natural sense of space. The HD 490 Pro and HEDDphone Two fit that role in MusicRadar’s recommendations. Their leakage makes them less suitable for live recording monitoring or shared quiet spaces.

A closed-back model is often the more flexible starting point if you need to record as well as listen, because you can use it near a microphone with less risk of leakage than an open-back design. The ATH-M50x is MusicRadar’s beginner pick; the MDR-7506 is its budget pick. For mixing, learn the tonal character of whichever pair you choose and cross-check decisions elsewhere.

Check source compatibility, comfort, and maintenance
Match impedance to the headphone output
Impedance is one compatibility clue, not a guarantee that a pair will play loudly or cleanly from every device. MusicRadar’s general guidance treats headphones below 100 ohms as lower-impedance options that are more likely to work with phones, laptops, and modest interface outputs; higher-impedance models are more likely to benefit from a capable interface or headphone amplifier. The HD 490 Pro is 130 ohms, while the other four listed models are below 100 ohms.
Check the output specifications for your phone, computer, interface, or amplifier, and audition the headphones with your actual source if possible. Output power and the headphone’s sensitivity also affect usable volume, so impedance alone cannot settle compatibility.
Try the fit for the length of your sessions
Weight is only one part of comfort. Earcup shape, clamping force, heat, and headband pressure matter too, and preferences vary. The HEDDphone Two is the heaviest listed model at 495 g; MusicRadar also flags the size of the HD 490 Pro Plus case and the MDR-7506 headband cushioning. If you work for hours at a time, try a pair for a realistic session before committing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConsider cables, pads, and portability
A detachable cable can be easier to replace than a fixed one, while replaceable pads and other serviceable parts can extend a headphone’s useful life. The ATH-M50x package includes three interchangeable cables and a pouch, according to Audio-Technica. beyerdynamic says components of the classic DT 770 PRO are replaceable; confirm exact compatibility before buying any replacement part, especially for a Pro X model. Also check whether the cable length and connector suit your interface and whether the case fits your travel setup.
Make reliable mix decisions on headphones
Headphones can reveal edits, noise, and detail, but their tonal balance can influence how you judge bass, treble, and levels. MusicRadar specifically cautions that the MDR-7506 is not flat overall and that ATH-M50x users should pay attention to its low and high end. Learn the sound of your chosen pair using familiar music, then compare your work on speakers and familiar consumer playback devices.
That cross-check is not a promise that a mix will translate everywhere; it is a practical way to catch decisions that sound convincing only on one playback system. No headphone model by itself guarantees an accurate mix.
