For a first test, use 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, 5 Mbps CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. This matches YouTube’s current encoder guidance for those settings; it is a baseline to test, not a music-specific preset or a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. If your connection or computer struggles, test 720p30 instead. A 24/7 broadcast also needs a plan for network interruptions, copyright checks, and YouTube’s archive limit.
Recommended starting settings
YouTube’s encoder table gives format-specific guidance, not a dedicated profile for continuous music streams. These values are a practical starting point for testing; the right choice depends on your upload connection, encoder hardware, and how detailed or animated your visuals are. The 720p bitrate figures are YouTube’s general H.264 guidance, not a special recommendation for music or static artwork. You can test within the listed range and inspect image quality. A low-motion visual may work at a lower practical bitrate than fast-moving footage, but confirm that with a real test stream.

Choose a format your connection and computer can sustain
Resolution, frame rate, and visual complexity
Use 1080p30 when the added detail is useful and your computer can encode it reliably. Try 720p30 when you need to reduce encoding or bandwidth load. YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default and transcodes video for viewer playback; choose an ingest quality that remains stable rather than pushing the highest possible setting.

Codec and rate control
YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 support for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). XSplit’s available encoder choices depend on your hardware, installed drivers, and selected streaming service. Upload bandwidth headroom
YouTube recommends leaving about 20% room in your upload bandwidth. Measure the connection under realistic conditions, including other household or office traffic, and keep capacity above the combined stream bitrate. A speed-test result at an otherwise idle moment does not ensure that a long broadcast will remain stable. YouTube warns: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” See its streaming tips.

Latency
For background music that does not depend on real-time interaction, lower latency is usually less important than reliable playback. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering for viewers. Choose a latency mode in YouTube Studio based on whether live audience interaction matters, and test playback before settling on it.

- Build the scene. In XSplit, create a scene with the sources you need: the visual, music playback, and any other intended content. XSplit defines a scene as a collection of sources arranged in a layout. Set the canvas resolution and frame rate to match your intended output before going live.
- Connect the YouTube output. Use XSplit’s platform setup for YouTube and select the correct channel and live event. If setting up the encoder manually, YouTube requires a stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, share it, or show it in a recording. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the connection details.
- Open the output properties. Configure resolution, frame rate, video bitrate and rate control, keyframe interval, and audio encoding using the values above where XSplit makes them available. XSplit advises leaving most advanced encoder settings at their defaults unless a platform requirement or advanced configuration calls for a change.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Send the actual music and visual through the intended output before the public broadcast. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream and check its stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring health during the event.
- Check the viewer experience. Watch from a separate device or browser, verify that audio is audible and synchronized, and listen for clipping, silence, dropouts, or unintended desktop sounds. Repeat the test after meaningful changes to software, drivers, sources, or network conditions. A successful test is useful evidence, not a promise of future uptime.
Plan for the realities of a 24/7 broadcast
Settings cannot guarantee continuous uptime
The encoder values above do not guarantee an uninterrupted stream. A network failure, computer issue, or YouTube-side interruption can stop a broadcast. Monitor stream health and decide in advance how you will notice a failure and restart the stream. The cited XSplit and YouTube guidance does not establish a guaranteed-uptime configuration or a specific automatic restart schedule for XSplit.

A 24/7 stream is outside YouTube’s stated automatic archive condition
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24-hour broadcast is outside that stated condition, so do not count on the entire broadcast being saved as one archive. Check YouTube’s current workflow and plan separately if you need recordings of the music stream.
Clear music rights before you stream
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn the creator, and temporarily interrupt or terminate the broadcast if the content remains. For licensed third-party music, the rights owner may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a license alone does not necessarily prevent an interruption. Use music for which you have appropriate rights and platform clearance. Review YouTube’s encoder and live-stream guidance before relying on a licensed track for a long session.

Troubleshoot common stream problems
