Build recovery into the application: watch the pipeline bus, identify whether the failure is a transient network error, wait for connectivity to return, then reset or recreate the failed publishing output and verify the result in YouTube Live Control Room. The right restart scope depends on your pipeline; no single state-change sequence is safe for every setup.
First, identify where the stream stopped
An outage can involve the broadband service, Wi-Fi or router/ONT, the computer’s network connection, GStreamer’s RTMP output, or YouTube’s ingestion. The timing alone does not prove Airtel caused the failure. Check the GStreamer bus and debug output alongside YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and error messages.

- Network unavailable: Confirm the host can reach the internet again. If other devices are online but the encoder is not, check the host’s network interface, DNS and route.
- GStreamer error: Record which element reported the error and its debug details. A dropped connection is different from an invalid stream key, missing plugin or unsupported media format.
- YouTube ingestion issue: Check Live Control Room for stream health and format errors. Confirm the current ingestion URL and key there rather than assuming the previous connection is still valid.
The available official documentation does not establish Airtel-specific modem settings, outage status or a provider recovery guarantee for this setup. If the broadband link itself remains unavailable or unstable, verify the connection and contact Airtel support for current provider-side guidance.

Set up application-level reconnect handling
The GStreamer rtmpsink and rtmp2sink references describe sending FLV/RTMP to a server, but do not document a general automatic reconnect setting. GStreamer’s pipeline documentation says that listening to the GstBus is necessary to retrieve pipeline errors; without it, a pipeline can stop without an indication of why (GstPipeline).

- Watch the bus. Install a bus watch or poll the pipeline bus from the application’s main context. GStreamer messages originate from streaming threads and are delivered to the application through the bus.
- Capture actionable error detail. On
GST_MESSAGE_ERROR, record the source element, error text and debug details. Keep transient network failures distinct from authentication, configuration, plugin and media-format errors. Do not write a real YouTube stream key to logs. - Apply a bounded retry policy. For an error classified as transient, stop or tear down the failed output branch or pipeline cleanly. Wait until general connectivity is back, using a bounded backoff and a retry limit or other health policy. This is an application design recommendation based on GStreamer’s bus and error model, not a universal vendor-prescribed reconnect algorithm.
- Reset the appropriate publishing path. Recreate or reset the sink or pipeline using the existing encoded/muxed output, then resume publishing. Whether the sink, publishing branch or whole pipeline must restart depends on the source and pipeline design.
- Confirm recovery at YouTube. Check Live Control Room for incoming data and healthy stream status before treating the stream as restored. A successful local state change alone does not prove YouTube is receiving the broadcast.
The sink documentation does not guarantee uninterrupted continuation, preservation of the same live event, or automatic recovery after a connection loss. Build the behavior around your actual pipeline and test the recovery path before relying on it unattended.
Handle clock loss separately from a network reconnect
GStreamer’s streaming tutorial documents moving a pipeline to PAUSED and then back to PLAYING after GST_MESSAGE_CLOCK_LOST so it can select a new clock (Basic tutorial 12: Streaming). That is a clock-recovery recipe, not a documented universal fix for an outbound RTMP sink that lost its server connection.

Do not use buffering as a blanket cure for a total broadband outage in a live publisher. The tutorial discusses buffering for network playback and treats live sources differently in its example; buffering may not match the behavior or recovery needs of your publishing pipeline.
Check YouTube’s ingest configuration and stream health
Use the current RTMPS ingestion URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP and recommends checking the protocol, server URL, encoder RTMPS support and—where applicable—port 443 when troubleshooting connection timeout or SSL errors (Encrypt your stream using RTMPS).

- For a timeout or SSL error, verify that the encoder is configured for RTMPS and that its server URL matches the current YouTube destination.
- For a connected encoder with unhealthy stream status, inspect YouTube’s format and audio/video stream-setting messages rather than repeatedly restarting the network.
- For a missing-data message, check whether GStreamer is actually sending output after the restart and whether the sink reports a new error.
- YouTube’s Live Streaming API can expose primary and optional backup ingestion addresses and health status. A backup address is a separately configured destination; it does not restart a failed local GStreamer pipeline.
Never include a real stream key in public troubleshooting posts, screenshots or logs. Treat it as a credential and replace it in YouTube if it has been exposed.
Choose restart scope based on the failure
There is no documented recovery-time comparison or universal restart boundary for all GStreamer publishing pipelines. Use the smallest scope that can reliably re-establish output, while preserving source and encoder state only if your design supports it.

Troubleshoot common reconnect failures
- The broadband link is back, but GStreamer stays stopped: The return of connectivity does not itself restart an errored sink. Check the bus error and implement the application-level reset/recreation path.
- The retry loop runs but never succeeds: Check whether the fault is actually transient. Invalid credentials, URL, plugin availability or media format require correction, not faster retries. Capture error and debug details for diagnosis.
- The pipeline reports clock loss: Apply the documented
PAUSED-then-PLAYINGhandling for clock selection, but continue to treat sink reconnection as a separate problem. - YouTube reports no incoming data after a local restart: Verify that the output branch is active, the RTMPS destination and key are current, and Live Control Room receives data.
- YouTube reports a format or stream-settings problem: Use its health messages to check the audio/video format and stream configuration; cycling the router will not fix a media-format error.
- Only the encoder host remains offline: Check its Wi-Fi/Ethernet and operating-system network state independently of other devices. The outage symptom alone does not identify whether the ISP, router/ONT or host connection failed.
