For a stability-first XboxRecomp setup on Windows, start at native resolution scale, verify the game at its original aspect behavior before enabling widescreen, keep texture sharpness neutral or moderate, and use a 60 FPS cap only when the title and display can sustain it. If pacing is uneven, move to 30 FPS or adaptive rather than chasing a higher peak number. Use F9 to watch frame rate and F10 to switch between adaptive, 60, 30 and uncapped modes.
For input, the documented path is straightforward: the keyboard works without setup, and an XInput controller is used directly. Rebind controls with py -3 -m tools.input_ui or the launcher’s Input tab. Display settings are stored in a per-title configuration file, while controller mappings live separately in input_bindings.json, so changing graphics options should not erase your bindings.

What XboxRecomp is and why the settings differ from emulation
XboxRecomp is described in the sp00nznet project README as a “Static Recompilation Toolkit for Original Xbox Games.” Its stated goal is to turn an Xbox game binary into a native executable for Windows, Linux or macOS: “No emulation. No interpreter. Just raw, recompiled C.” The project documents a D3D8-to-D3D11 graphics translation layer and an Xbox-gamepad-to-XInput input layer.

XboxRecomp’s launcher is organized into Video, Input and About tabs. The Video tab exposes resolution scale, widescreen, wide camera, texture sharpness, frame cap and a frame-rate counter. The Input tab can rebind keyboard and pad controls for all four ports. There is no published universal preset or stability benchmark, so the starting points below are practical, stability-oriented inferences from the available controls rather than a measured benchmark result.
Recommended graphics baseline
Apply these values before making title-specific adjustments. The goal is consistent frame time and correct rendering, not the highest instantaneous FPS number.

“Native” means the launcher’s baseline resolution scale rather than a guaranteed original Xbox output resolution. A modest increase is intentionally conservative: the project does not publish a single scale value that is optimal for every recompiled title or Windows graphics device.
Why frame-time consistency comes first
A high peak FPS reading can still feel uneven when frames arrive irregularly. Compare settings by how consistently F9 behaves during the same repeatable scene, camera movement or menu transition. If a change raises the displayed maximum but introduces visible hitching, it is not an improvement for a stability-focused profile.
How to tune one setting at a time
- Start the title with the baseline above. Keep resolution scale native, use conservative widescreen and camera settings, leave texture sharpness neutral or moderate, and choose a cap appropriate to what the title and monitor can sustain.
- Press F9. The in-game FPS counter provides the observation point for each change. Watch several repeatable moments rather than judging a single instant.
- Change exactly one launcher option. For example, enable widescreen without also raising resolution scale. This isolates whether a visual or pacing change came from the aspect setting, the scale, or another control.
- Press F10 to test the cap modes. F10 steps through adaptive, 60, 30 and off. Record which mode produces the most even delivery in the same scene.
- Keep the setting that improves consistency. If a change only increases the maximum reading while making movement less even, revert it.
- Capture rendering problems with F11. F11 saves the current frame as a picture and as a replayable capture. The project documentation identifies this capture as the way to report a rendering bug.
Do not make several changes between observations. A one-change loop is slower than applying a preset all at once, but it tells you which control caused a benefit or a regression and makes a later recovery possible.

What each graphics control does in a stable setup
Resolution scale
Resolution scale is the first image-quality control to adjust after the game is rendering correctly. Native scale is the safest baseline because it avoids adding an unmeasured GPU workload. If native output is stable, try only a modest increase and check F9 again in the same scene. If pacing worsens, return to native before changing anything else.
Use scale as a controlled quality trade-off, not as a way to compensate for a frame-cap problem. A cap that is too aggressive or a widescreen issue will not be fixed reliably by changing resolution scale. Isolate those variables first.

Enable widescreen only after the title has passed a correctness check at conservative settings. Look for normal geometry, correctly positioned menus and a HUD that is not stretched or clipped. If any of those elements look wrong, disable widescreen and continue with the stable baseline. The available documentation does not promise that every title handles widescreen identically.
Wide camera
Wide camera is a distinct launcher control, not merely another name for the widescreen switch. Test it after widescreen has been verified, and change it independently. If the field of view or camera framing becomes incorrect, turn wide camera back off while leaving other working settings intact.
Texture sharpness
Neutral or moderate sharpness is the sensible starting point because it preserves a balance between clarity and processing work. Increase it only after the frame cap and aspect behavior are stable. If a sharper setting makes frame delivery less consistent, revert to neutral; a cleaner texture is not worth uneven motion in a stability profile.

Frame cap
The launcher exposes adaptive, 60, 30 and off modes through F10. Choose 60 when the game and monitor sustain it consistently. Choose 30 when 60 cannot be maintained evenly. Adaptive is useful when a fixed 60 or 30 cap does not match the title’s behavior. Off is uncapped and is best reserved for diagnosing whether the cap itself is involved in a problem.

FPS counter
The counter is a measurement aid rather than a performance setting. Press F9 while changing one option at a time, compare the same scene, and disable the display after tuning if the overlay is distracting.
Stutter and uneven pacing: a recovery path
XboxRecomp’s published material does not provide a universal stutter fix or a benchmark that identifies one setting as best for every game. Use the symptom to choose the smallest next change.
F9 looks high, but motion is uneven
- Press F10 and test the 60 FPS cap if it is not already active.
- If 60 remains uneven, test 30 and adaptive in the same scene.
- Keep the mode with the most consistent delivery, even if its displayed FPS is lower.
- Do not change resolution scale or texture sharpness until the cap comparison is complete.
Pacing worsens after raising image quality
- Return resolution scale to native.
- Return texture sharpness to neutral or moderate.
- Use F9 to verify the baseline again.
- Raise only one of those controls modestly, then retest.
Menus or geometry look wrong after enabling widescreen
- Disable widescreen and relaunch or return to the title as appropriate.
- Confirm that the conservative presentation is correct.
- Re-enable widescreen by itself.
- Test wide camera separately; if framing changes incorrectly, leave that control disabled.
A Windows graphics change seems to alter pacing
Windows has per-app graphics controls at Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Select the recompiled executable, review the available options, apply one operating-system change, and recheck F9 before making another. This prevents a graphics-driver or Windows preference change from being confused with a launcher setting.
The launcher appears to ignore a saved display value
Check the first [CONFIG] line in the game log. It identifies the configuration file the game actually read. This is more reliable than assuming that the file you edited is the active one, especially when an environment variable points to another location.

Controller setup and reliable remapping
The documented input behavior is simple: a keyboard works out of the box, and an XInput controller works as itself through XboxRecomp’s input layer. Bindings are player-specific, and the tooling supports up to four players.
Rebind with the command-line tool
- Open a Windows command prompt in the XboxRecomp project or title environment where the tools are available.
- Run
py -3 -m tools.input_ui. - Use the input UI to select the player or port you want to edit.
- Assign keyboard or controller inputs as prompted.
- Save the bindings, then launch the title and test every required action for that player.
The command uses the Windows Python launcher. If py -3 is not available, the documented command cannot start until that launcher and the project’s tools are available in your environment; do not substitute an unverified command and assume it writes the same file.
Rebind in the launcher
- Open the title launcher.
- Select the Input tab.
- Choose the relevant player or port.
- Rebind keyboard and pad controls.
- Save, start the game and verify the mapping in play.
The launcher Input tab covers all four ports, so a multiplayer setup should be tested one port at a time. Input bindings are separate from display configuration; changing frame cap, resolution scale or widescreen should not overwrite controller mappings.
When a controller is not detected
- Check Windows first. Confirm that the pad is visible to Windows as an XInput device. XboxRecomp’s documented direct controller path is XInput.
- Test the binding tool. Run
py -3 -m tools.input_uiand see whether the device is available for rebinding. - Check the launcher Input tab. Verify that the correct player or port is selected and that a binding was saved.
- Inspect the game log. Use it to identify input or configuration errors rather than repeatedly changing graphics settings.
- Retest in the title. Verify movement and several buttons after each binding change.
If Windows does not expose the device as XInput, fix that recognition problem before changing XboxRecomp’s display options. The project documentation does not publish a controller-reliability percentage, so a successful Windows detection and a verified binding are the practical checkpoints.

When troubleshooting, verify the active display file before editing it. If RECOMP_DISPLAY_CONFIG is set, the game may be reading the path named by that variable, and any environment-variable value takes precedence over the corresponding file value.

Keeping display and input data separate is useful operationally: you can reset a frame cap or resolution scale without rebuilding controller mappings, and you can revise a player binding without disturbing a known-good graphics profile.
How to compare two settings profiles
When deciding between a conservative profile and a sharper or wider profile, compare the same scene and record the following axes:

Save the profile that wins on the reader’s actual priority. A stable native-scale 30 FPS setup is preferable to a visually sharper uncapped setup if the latter produces uneven movement or unreliable input testing.

The documented controls and key bindings establish how to tune the launcher, inspect FPS, change caps, capture a rendering report and configure up to four controller ports. They do not establish one universal graphics preset for every title.
The reviewed primary material publishes no stability benchmark, average FPS figure or controller-reliability statistic for XboxRecomp. It also provides no named-person quotation supporting a particular recommended setting. Consequently, the baseline in this guide is a repeatable tuning method grounded in the documented controls, not a claim that every game will reach a specific frame rate or that every controller will work without Windows-side configuration.
