For most conference venues and live events, compare Shure SLX-D and Sennheiser EW-DX first. Choose SLX-D for a straightforward professional digital UHF system, EW-DX for a scalable meeting-and-stage platform, Shure QLX-D when networked control and higher channel density matter, and Shure ULX-D for large, dense or permanently installed systems. All four can deliver roughly 300–330 feet (100 m) of line-of-sight range under favorable conditions, but frequency coordination, antenna placement and local spectrum rules determine whether a system actually works in a busy venue.

What a wireless microphone system includes

A wireless microphone system is a matched transmitter, receiver and microphone configuration. The microphone converts speech or vocals to an audio signal, the bodypack or handheld transmitter sends that signal over a licensed or license-exempt radio band, and the receiver feeds a mixer, powered speaker, camera or conference-processing system. Buying a microphone alone is not enough: the transmitter and receiver must share a compatible frequency band and regional tuning range.

Conference and event systems normally use one of four microphone formats:

  • Handheld: The presenter holds the microphone. It provides familiar vocal projection and avoids clothing noise, but occupies one hand.
  • Lavalier: A small clip-on microphone connects to a bodypack. It keeps both hands free and looks unobtrusive, although placement and clothing friction affect sound.
  • Headset: A miniature capsule stays close to the speaker’s mouth, giving consistent level while the presenter moves. It is useful for presenters who turn their heads or gesture frequently.
  • Boundary: A table-top transmitter and microphone capture discussion around a conference table. Shure’s ULXD6 boundary transmitter is designed for this type of conference-table use.

The receiver may be a single half-rack unit for a small event or a networked, multi-channel installation with antenna distribution for a large venue. Treat the entire radio path, not just the microphone capsule, as the product you are evaluating.

Best choices by venue and workflow

Use case Best starting point Why it fits Important qualification
Small to mid-size conference or event with a few channels Shure SLX-D with an SM58 handheld Professional digital UHF operation, 44 MHz tuning bandwidth and up to 32 compatible systems per band. Confirm the regional frequency block and the exact handheld/receiver bundle before ordering.
Meetings, lecture halls and mixed conference/stage work Sennheiser EW-DX Scalable digital UHF family intended for meetings, conferences, education spaces and onstage use. Verify the local range preset and the precise receiver and transmitter configuration.
Venue needing networked scanning, monitoring or control Shure QLX-D Network workflows, up to 60 compatible systems per band and a nominal 100 m (328 ft) working range. Use coordinated frequencies; the nominal range assumes suitable conditions.
Large conference center, dense channel count or permanent installation Shure ULX-D Up to 60 compatible systems per band, network control, Dante integration and High Density mode. Plan antenna distribution, RF coordination and installation power before selecting channel counts.
One-off event with many microphones Coordinated rental inventory with an RF technician A rental house can supply matched bands, spare units and on-site coordination without leaving you with an undersized system. Specify the venue, dates, channel count, microphone formats and local spectrum requirements when requesting a quote.

These are capability-based choices, not a claim that one manufacturer is universally more reliable. Published specifications describe what a system can support; they do not guarantee indoor range or immunity to interference.

Channel capacity and range: the numbers that matter

System Published compatible-channel capacity Tuning or operating information Published range or latency Networking and audio highlights
Shure SLX-D Up to 32 compatible systems per band (Shure comparison specification, 2025) 44 MHz tuning bandwidth (Shure comparison specification, 2025) 300 ft line of sight (Shure comparison specification, 2025) Digital UHF tier for simpler professional deployments; exact network features depend on the receiver model.
Shure QLX-D Up to 60 compatible systems per band (Shure comparison specification, 2025) Frequency coordination and network-control workflows supported through Shure tools 100 m (328 ft) working range; less than 2.9 ms latency; more than 120 dB A-weighted typical dynamic range (Shure specification, accessed 2026) Networked scanning and control; suitable when an operator must monitor and coordinate many channels.
Shure ULX-D Up to 60 compatible systems per band (Shure comparison specification, 2025) High Density mode for large channel plans 330 ft line of sight (Shure comparison specification, 2025) Network control, Dante options and AES-256 encryption; supports installed and touring workflows.
Sennheiser EW-DX Not stated in the supplied manufacturer information Digital UHF family; local range preset and regional configuration must be verified Up to 100 m (approximately 328 ft) in ideal clear line of sight (Sennheiser operating-distance guidance, 2026) Designed for meetings, conferences, lecture halls, education spaces and stage use; scan for clean frequencies.

Range figures are not room-size guarantees. The 300–330 ft (100 m) values assume clear line of sight. Walls, people, metal structures, reflections, stage scenery, Wi-Fi and other wireless systems can reduce usable distance. A receiver that shows a strong signal at an empty soundcheck may lose margin after an audience fills the room.

For a multi-microphone event, channel capacity is usually more important than the headline range. A system can cover the back of a hall yet fail when several transmitters intermodulate or compete with nearby RF sources. Capacity figures also depend on a coordinated frequency plan, compatible regional band and the operating mode selected.

How many wireless microphones can you run?

Start with the number of simultaneous transmitters, not the number of speakers on the program. Count handhelds, lavalier and headset bodypacks, boundary transmitters, instrument transmitters and any wireless systems already installed in the room. Add a spare channel only after the active inventory has been coordinated; an unplanned spare transmitter can still create interference when powered on.

Small and mid-size deployments

For a few microphones in a meeting room or small stage, SLX-D or EW-DX may provide ample capacity. Keep the receiver antennas in the same room as the transmitters when possible, and avoid placing the receiver behind a video wall, inside a metal rack or under the stage.

High-density deployments

When a venue approaches dozens of simultaneous channels, use a system and workflow designed for coordination. QLX-D and ULX-D list up to 60 compatible systems per band, while SLX-D lists up to 32. The number is a manufacturer capability under coordinated conditions, not a promise that every room, region or frequency block can legally host that many channels.

Installed conference systems

Permanent installations often need repeatable channel assignments, remote monitoring, network access and documented recovery procedures. ULX-D’s network control, Dante options and High Density mode address those operational requirements. QLX-D is a better fit when networked scanning and control are important but the installation does not require every ULX-D feature.

Frequency bands, regional legality and coordination

Wireless frequencies are region-specific. The same model name can be sold in different tuning blocks, and a block legal in one country may be restricted or unavailable in another. Match the transmitter and receiver band, then confirm that the band is permitted for your location and application before buying inventory.

  1. Identify the country and venue location. Do not rely on a frequency label from a different market or a used unit’s previous deployment.
  2. List every RF source. Include existing microphones, in-ear systems, intercoms, television transmitters, Wi-Fi access points and other equipment that will operate during the event.
  3. Use the manufacturer’s frequency finder or coordination software. Build a coordinated set rather than selecting frequencies manually from a channel display.
  4. Scan at the actual event location. A scan in a warehouse or office cannot reveal local television, building infrastructure or neighboring event systems at the venue.
  5. Document assignments. Record transmitter ID, receiver channel, frequency, microphone format, speaker name and backup channel so another operator can restore the system.
  6. Recheck local licensing. Spectrum rules and licensing obligations vary by geography, band and application. If the venue is near broadcast facilities or a border, ask the relevant regulator or a qualified RF coordinator.

Sennheiser’s operating-distance guidance recommends scanning for clean frequencies because Wi-Fi and other wireless systems can reduce performance. Shure’s higher-tier systems are intended to support coordinated, networked workflows, but the operator still has to create and validate the frequency plan.

Step-by-step setup for a conference or live event

  1. Inventory the show. Write down the maximum number of simultaneous microphones, every format required, the stage and audience areas, and whether Dante, analog outputs or a camera feed will be used.
  2. Verify regional hardware. Check the receiver and transmitter frequency block, power requirements and included accessories. Do not mix units from incompatible bands.
  3. Coordinate frequencies. Run the manufacturer’s coordination tool or frequency finder using the venue scan and the complete RF inventory. Save the resulting channel list.
  4. Position antennas. Give receiving antennas a clear sight line to the working area. Keep them away from large metal objects, video transmitters and high-power network equipment. For larger systems, use appropriate antenna distribution hardware rather than passive splitters chosen at random.
  5. Connect and label receivers. Feed each receiver to the mixer, DSP or camera input, label both ends of every cable and note the receiver channel in the show file.
  6. Set transmitter gain. Have the actual presenter speak at normal and loud levels while an engineer sets input gain. Avoid compensating for a weak microphone by running excessive receiver or mixer gain.
  7. Walk-test the room. Walk every audience aisle, stage position, lectern and backstage handoff while monitoring RF and audio. Test with doors, partitions and the expected audience arrangement in place.
  8. Check intermodulation and adjacent systems. Turn on all planned transmitters, wireless monitors and other RF devices together. Listen for dropouts, clicks, distortion or sudden noise before guests arrive.
  9. Prepare backups. Keep a wired microphone connected and tested at the mixer. Charge spare battery sets or approved rechargeable packs and place a labeled spare transmitter where the operator can reach it.
  10. Lock the operating plan. Once the walk-test passes, discourage last-minute frequency changes. If a new transmitter is added, coordinate it before powering it on.

Choosing the right microphone format

Format Best for Advantages Risks and setup notes
Handheld Keynotes, audience Q&A, vocal performance Clear speech, simple placement and easy handoff between speakers. One hand is occupied; speakers who move the microphone away from their mouth will sound inconsistent.
Lavalier Presenters who need both hands free Unobtrusive and convenient for slides, demonstrations and panelists. Clip position, clothing movement and cable routing affect level and noise; fit each speaker before the event.
Headset Active presenters, trainers and performers Stable mouth-to-microphone distance while the speaker turns or moves. Requires careful fit, hygiene handling and correct sensitivity adjustment.
Boundary Conference tables and moderated discussions Captures a seated participant without a handheld microphone in front of each person. Table reflections, room reverberation and multiple talkers can reduce clarity; place units deliberately.

The transmitter family and microphone connector must match. A lavalier capsule intended for one bodypack wiring standard may not work correctly on another without the correct connector and pinout.

Networking, Dante and encryption

Networked control matters when an operator must monitor many receivers from a control position, make coordinated frequency changes or document system status. QLX-D supports networked scanning and control workflows. ULX-D extends that approach with network control, Dante options and High Density mode for dense systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dante is relevant when the venue’s audio network carries microphone channels directly to a digital mixer, DSP or recording system. Confirm that the selected receiver actually includes the required Dante-capable output and that the venue’s network is configured for real-time audio. An analog receiver output remains the simpler choice when the mixer is nearby or the event uses a conventional copper snake.

Shure describes QLX-D as offering AES-256 encryption and rechargeable options, while its conference guidance identifies ULX-D as supporting Dante, AES-256 and High Density mode. Encryption is useful for confidential meetings, but every receiver and transmitter in the audio path must support and be configured for the same mode. Do not assume that a generic “digital” label means encrypted audio.

Battery and power planning

Battery failure is a more common event-day problem than a published range limit. Decide whether the production will use replaceable batteries or approved rechargeable packs, then standardize charging, labeling and rotation. Charge every active and spare unit, record its status and replace batteries before the manufacturer’s low-voltage warning becomes an on-air failure.

  • Keep one labeled spare transmitter for each high-profile microphone position when the budget allows.
  • Carry fresh replacement batteries even when rechargeable packs are the normal workflow.
  • Never mix partially used cells from different sets in one transmitter.
  • Secure receiver power and network switches on protected circuits for installed systems.
  • For outdoor or touring work, protect charging stations and receivers from moisture and accidental unplugging.

Rechargeable options can reduce battery waste and simplify a large inventory, but they add charging logistics. A rental or venue team should document which packs belong to which transmitters and verify run time under the actual transmit-power setting.

When renting is safer than buying

A one-off event may require more channels, unusual frequency blocks or antenna distribution than a small permanent inventory can provide. Renting coordinated equipment can be more reliable than buying a few incompatible systems and discovering the shortage during setup.

Ask a rental provider or event RF coordinator to confirm:

  • Country, city and venue address for frequency planning.
  • Number of simultaneous transmitters and required handheld, lavalier, headset or boundary formats.
  • Room dimensions, stage layout, audience areas and cable paths.
  • Existing wireless systems and the venue’s Wi-Fi or broadcast equipment.
  • Receiver outputs required by the mixer, DSP, camera or Dante network.
  • On-site RF support, spares, battery service and a written channel assignment.

For a large conference center, an RF technician can rescan when neighboring events appear, replace a failing transmitter quickly and keep the show running while the program changes.

Troubleshooting common failures

Audio drops out when the presenter walks away

Confirm that the receiver and transmitter are on the same band and frequency, then inspect antenna placement and cable connections. Move the receiver or antennas to restore a clear path, remove obstructions and repeat the walk-test. If the problem appears only with the audience present, the body density and room reflections may have reduced the available RF margin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several microphones work alone but fail together

Power down unneeded transmitters, then rerun frequency coordination with every active RF device included. Manually choosing channels that look separated on a display can still create intermodulation products. Use the manufacturer’s coordination workflow and document the revised assignments.

The system is noisy or distorted

Check transmitter input gain and microphone placement before changing RF settings. Excessive gain can overload the transmitter or mixer; insufficient gain encourages the operator to raise noisy downstream stages. Test with the actual speaker’s voice and the intended microphone capsule.

A receiver shows RF but no audio reaches the mixer

Verify the receiver output cable, mixer input selection, channel mute, phantom-power requirements for any connected device and the transmitter’s microphone connector. Confirm that the receiver is not receiving a different transmitter on the same frequency.

Wi-Fi or another wireless system appeared after setup

Do not simply increase audio gain or move one channel at random. Record the new RF source, scan again at the event position, coordinate a replacement frequency and walk-test the affected area before returning the microphone to service.

  • Maximum simultaneous channel count calculated, including existing venue systems.
  • Required range assessed by room layout rather than the headline specification.
  • Microphone formats chosen for each speaker and table position.
  • Network control, Dante and encryption requirements documented.
  • Antenna distribution and cabling planned for the largest room.

  • Wired backup microphone connected and tested.
  • Frequency scan and coordination scheduled at the venue.
  • Local licensing and spectrum rules checked immediately before purchase or deployment.

What the specifications cannot tell you

Manufacturer data is useful for comparing tuning bandwidth, channel capacity, latency, dynamic range and intended workflows. It cannot establish a universal failure-rate winner between Shure and Sennheiser, and it cannot guarantee a particular indoor range. Prices, inventory, regional legality and software support can change, so confirm those details immediately before committing to a purchase or rental.

For the most predictable event, select the system whose channel capacity and network workflow match the venue, coordinate every RF source at the location, and keep a wired backup ready. That process matters more than choosing a model solely because its nominal range number is larger.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
