KDE Plasma is the best first choice for a Windows user who wants to customize the desktop itself, not just its wallpaper and colors. Plasma lets you move and resize panels, add and rearrange widgets, change fonts and colors, apply themes, and install community extensions. You can keep a familiar taskbar-style layout or redesign the shell around your own workflow.
GNOME is the stronger alternative when you want a different way to work: its Activities overview, dash, workspaces, window switching, and tiling are central to the experience. It is highly configurable as a workflow, but it does not expose the same panel-and-widget editing model emphasized by Plasma. KDE Plasma is available in nearly all major Linux distributions, so you do not need to install the separate KDE Linux project. KDE Linux is currently labeled alpha/testing software and is not the sensible default for a primary computer.

Quick answer: which Windows alternative should you choose?
| Option | Best for | Customization model | Windows familiarity | Readiness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows with themes | Cosmetic personalization and accessibility settings | Backgrounds, window colors, sounds, cursors, contrast themes, and color filters | Highest | Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; availability depends on your Windows edition and support status |
| KDE Plasma on a released Linux distribution | Users who want to reshape the desktop shell | Panels, widgets, fonts, colors, themes, extensions, and window behavior | High when configured with a conventional panel layout | Practical choice through mainstream Linux distributions |
| GNOME on a released Linux distribution | Users who prefer an activity-driven workflow | Activities overview, dash, workspaces, window switching, and tiling | Moderate; the workflow differs deliberately from a traditional taskbar | Practical through distributions that package GNOME |
| KDE Linux | People testing KDE’s own operating-system project | KDE software integrated as a project-controlled system | Varies | Alpha/testing; KDE warns about regressions and hardware issues |
Windows’ built-in personalization remains useful when you only need a new background, accent color, sound scheme, pointer, contrast theme, or color filter. Microsoft describes themes as combinations of desktop backgrounds, window colors, sounds, and related elements. The limitation is scope: these settings personalize the existing shell, while Plasma lets you alter the shell’s structure.
For the broadest built-in control, start with a released Linux distribution and select KDE Plasma. Choose GNOME instead when changing the way you find, arrange, and switch between windows matters more than moving panels or adding widgets.

What Windows can customize—and where it stops
Windows themes combine several visual elements into a package, and Windows also provides separate controls for the desktop background, colors, sounds, mouse cursor, contrast themes, and color filters. These options cover many everyday needs: matching a color palette, improving contrast, changing pointer visibility, or making the desktop feel less static.
The distinction is between personalization and shell design. Windows gives you settings for the appearance and accessibility of the shell Microsoft supplies. It does not present the same documented, built-in model for relocating and resizing panels, placing arbitrary widgets around the desktop, changing the desktop’s font system as a design choice, or extending the shell with a community-driven library of add-ons.
That difference matters if your ideal desktop has a vertical panel on one monitor, a second panel containing system information, a custom launcher area, or controls arranged around a particular keyboard-and-mouse routine. In that situation, repeatedly changing wallpapers or accent colors will not address the underlying problem.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s support information. That date does not remove the personalization controls from an existing installation, but it is an important lifecycle consideration when deciding whether to invest more time in a Windows-based setup.
See Microsoft’s current explanation of themes and personalization at Personalize your Windows experience with themes.
Why KDE Plasma is the strongest customization alternative
Panels that can match your habits
Plasma treats panels as configurable desktop components rather than a fixed taskbar. KDE documents controls for moving and resizing panels. You can therefore preserve a familiar bottom bar, move it to the top or side, or use more than one panel for different tasks. A conventional arrangement makes the transition from Windows easier; a side panel can leave more vertical space for documents and browser windows.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Panel placement is not merely cosmetic. It changes where application launchers, task lists, status indicators, and other controls appear. A user with a wide monitor may prefer a vertical panel, while someone switching between a laptop and an external display may favor a compact horizontal bar. Plasma’s value is that these choices are part of the desktop’s normal configuration surface.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWidgets for information and controls
Plasma supports adding and rearranging widgets. Widgets can occupy a panel or the desktop, allowing frequently used information and actions to sit where you expect them. This is the key difference from a theme-only system: the desktop can become a working dashboard instead of a background behind application windows.
Because widgets are movable, you can experiment without committing to a new operating system layout. Keep a small, Windows-like panel while testing a clock, calendar, system monitor, launcher, or other available component. If a widget makes the screen noisy, remove it without rebuilding the desktop.
Themes, fonts, colors, and visual consistency
KDE documents controls for changing themes, colors, and fonts. These settings let you coordinate the appearance of windows, controls, text, and desktop elements instead of treating the wallpaper as the main design decision. A high-contrast palette, larger interface font, or muted color scheme can be applied as part of a coherent desktop style.
Fonts deserve special attention for people who find Windows scaling too coarse or inconsistent. Plasma exposes font choices as a desktop customization concern, so you can tune readability without relying only on application-specific settings. The exact options presented can vary with the distribution and Plasma release, but the controls are provided through Plasma’s System Settings and related customization tools.

Community extensions
Plasma also supports downloading community extensions. Extensions can add visual styles, widgets, and other desktop components. Community material varies in quality and maintenance, so treat it as optional: install one extension at a time, note what it changes, and remove it if it causes instability or makes the interface harder to understand.

How to move from Windows to Plasma
You do not have to adopt KDE Linux to use Plasma. KDE says Plasma is included in nearly all major Linux distributions. That gives you a choice of a released distribution with its own update and hardware-support policies while using Plasma as the desktop environment.
- Choose a released distribution that offers KDE Plasma. Verify that the download is a stable release rather than an experimental image, and check its hardware requirements and support policy before replacing Windows.
- Back up files and application data. Copy documents, photos, browser exports, password-vault backups, license information, and any project folders you cannot recreate. A desktop change is also an opportunity to verify that your backups can be restored.
- Test hardware before committing. Use the distribution’s live environment when available. Check Wi-Fi, sound, Bluetooth, suspend and resume, external displays, printers, cameras, touchpads, and graphics acceleration. A desktop that looks correct is not enough if essential hardware is missing.
- Install or create a Plasma session. During installation, select the Plasma desktop when the distribution offers a desktop choice. If Plasma is installed alongside another desktop, choose the Plasma session at the login screen; labels differ by distribution.
- Start with a familiar layout. Keep a conventional panel at the bottom, place the application launcher at the left, and enable a task list. This reduces the number of changes you must learn at once.
- Open Plasma’s System Settings. Work through appearance, colors, fonts, workspace behavior, and desktop effects in separate passes. Change one category, use the computer normally, and then decide whether another change is actually helpful.
- Configure panels and widgets. Unlock or edit the panel, move or resize it, then add only the widgets you can identify a real use for. Arrange them so primary controls remain easy to reach on both laptop and external displays.
- Add themes or extensions selectively. Record the name of each downloaded item. If a future update creates a visual or stability problem, removing the last addition is easier when you know what changed.
- Check your essential applications. Confirm that work, school, creative, communication, and peripheral-management software has a Linux version or an acceptable replacement before deleting the Windows installation.
This staged approach keeps the benefit of Plasma’s depth without turning the first login into a design project. You can stop after reproducing your Windows layout or continue until the desktop reflects a completely different workflow.
GNOME: the better choice for a different workflow
GNOME is not simply a less customizable version of Plasma. Its central design question is how you move among activities and windows. GNOME’s help documentation describes the Activities overview, dash, workspaces, window switching, and tiling as core concepts.
Activities overview
The Activities overview gathers open windows, applications, search, and workspaces into a single navigation surface. Instead of relying on a permanently visible taskbar for every action, you enter the overview when you need to find or organize work. This can reduce visual clutter for people who keep many applications open.
Dash and application launching
The dash provides quick access to frequently used applications and running programs. Its role is closer to a launcher and application switcher than to a fully reconfigurable Windows taskbar. If you want to redesign the panel itself, Plasma exposes more of that structure directly.

Workspaces and window switching
GNOME’s workspaces separate groups of windows into different areas. You might keep communication tools in one workspace, writing in another, and reference material in a third. Window switching and workspace movement become the organizing system, rather than placing every open program on one long task list.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Tiling
GNOME also documents tiling as part of its window-management workflow. Tiling can make side-by-side work predictable and efficient, especially on a wide display. It is a choice about arranging windows, not a promise that every desktop surface can be moved or decorated.
Read GNOME’s explanation of these concepts at https://help.gnome.org/gnome-help/shell-windows.html. Choose GNOME when the Activities-and-workspaces model sounds like an improvement over a traditional taskbar, even if you do not need extensive panel editing.
KDE Plasma versus GNOME for customization
| Question | KDE Plasma | GNOME |
|---|---|---|
| Can I move and resize panels? | Yes; KDE documents panel movement and resizing. | The documented emphasis is on Activities, dash, workspaces, switching, and tiling rather than the same panel-editing model. |
| Can I add desktop widgets? | Yes; widgets can be added and rearranged. | The supplied GNOME documentation does not present an equivalent panel-and-widget editing model. |
| Can I change fonts and colors as desktop design elements? | Yes; Plasma documents controls for fonts and colors. | GNOME’s cited help focuses on workflow and window organization. |
| Can I keep a Windows-like layout? | Yes; configure a conventional panel and task list. | Possible to approximate, but the core workflow remains Activity-based. |
| What is the main reason to choose it? | Maximum built-in shell customization. | A focused workflow built around overview navigation, workspaces, and tiling. |
Neither desktop is universally better. Plasma is the direct answer to a request to customize everything visible in the shell. GNOME is the better answer when the problem is window organization and context switching rather than the position of every control.

These are different choices. Plasma is a desktop environment that distributions package and support. KDE Linux is a separate, KDE-built operating system project. KDE’s project page currently labels KDE Linux alpha/testing software, warns of regressions and hardware issues, and says system-level customization is intentionally limited to preserve reliability.

Application compatibility is the main trade-off
Changing the desktop environment also changes the application ecosystem. KDE warns that some Windows-only software may be difficult to run in a Linux ecosystem. This is not a minor detail if your work depends on a particular professional application, a specialized driver utility, a corporate security client, or a peripheral-management tool.
Make an inventory before migrating:
- List every application you use weekly, not just the programs visible on your taskbar.
- Separate files from applications. A document format may be portable even when the program that created it is not.
- Check whether each essential program has a Linux release, a web version, or a file-compatible alternative.
- Confirm that collaboration partners, employers, schools, and support desks accept the replacement workflow.
- Keep a working Windows installation until the Linux setup has passed a complete work cycle.
Do not assume that a familiar-looking Plasma desktop guarantees Windows application compatibility. The shell can feel familiar while the software layer remains different.

Hardware checks
Released distributions with Plasma are the practical path, but hardware support still varies. Test the components that matter to your routine rather than relying on a successful boot alone. Pay particular attention to graphics switching on laptops, Wi-Fi firmware, sleep behavior, docking stations, high-resolution displays, fingerprint readers, and printers.
Maturity choices
A released distribution and an alpha operating-system project have different risk profiles. Released software can still contain bugs, but it is intended for normal use within that distribution’s support process. KDE Linux’s alpha/testing status means regressions and hardware problems are expected possibilities, not unusual edge cases.
Decision overload
Plasma’s strength creates more decisions. You can choose panel positions, widget arrangements, themes, fonts, colors, extensions, and window behavior. That flexibility is useful when you have a clear goal; it can feel excessive when you only wanted a slightly different accent color. Start with the smallest change that solves your problem, then expand deliberately.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Windows personalization if backgrounds, colors, sounds, cursors, contrast, and color filters meet your needs.
- Choose Plasma if you want to move or resize panels, add widgets, redesign fonts and colors, apply themes, and install extensions while retaining a familiar layout.
- Choose GNOME if Activities, the dash, workspaces, window switching, and tiling appeal more than a customizable taskbar.
- Choose a released distribution when reliability, hardware support, and everyday work matter.
- Try KDE Linux only as testing software if you accept alpha-level regressions, hardware issues, and intentionally limited system-level customization.
- Delay migration if a Windows-only application is essential and you have not validated a replacement.
Bottom line
KDE Plasma is the best Windows alternative for deeper desktop customization because its documented controls reach the shell itself: panels, widgets, fonts, colors, themes, and extensions. Install it through a released Linux distribution rather than treating KDE Linux’s current alpha/testing build as the default. Pick GNOME when you want to replace the taskbar-centered model with Activities, workspaces, dash navigation, window switching, and tiling. Keep Windows personalization when cosmetic and accessibility changes are all you need, but move to Plasma when the structure of the desktop—not just its appearance—is what you want to control.
