If your phone does not support eSIM, you can still get online abroad: use your carrier’s international roaming, put a compatible local physical SIM in an unlocked phone, connect over Wi-Fi, or share a portable hotspot. The right choice depends on your destination, device compatibility, coverage, total cost, and whether you need ordinary calls and texts or just internet access.
Compare your options
| Option | Setup and convenience | What to check | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home-carrier roaming | Usually the least setup; keeps your existing number and SIM. | Destination coverage, fees or passes, data limits, call and text charges, and roaming settings. | Travelers who value convenience and have suitable terms from their carrier. |
| Local physical SIM | Requires a physical SIM slot, an unlocked phone, and activation. | Network compatibility, local coverage, registration rules, plan validity, and top-up terms. | Travelers with an unlocked compatible phone who want local prepaid service. |
| Wi-Fi and apps | No cellular plan needed where Wi-Fi is available. | Where you can connect, app features, Wi-Fi calling rules, and network security. | Light data use or trips where internet access at stops is predictable. |
| Portable Wi-Fi hotspot | A separate device and service; can share a connection with several devices. | SIM or service type, bands, carrier acceptance, APN settings, coverage, battery, and total cost. | Travelers with multiple devices, or a phone that cannot accept a local SIM. |
Compare the full cost and practical trade-offs for your own trip: roaming charges, SIM or hotspot service, coverage, data limits, voice and SMS needs, and how many devices need access. Hong Kong’s Communications Authority advises travelers to compare the charging mechanisms and terms for SIMs and routers; restrictions can vary by provider and pass. Use your current carrier’s roaming
Roaming lets you keep your existing SIM and number, but availability and price depend on your home carrier, destination, and plan. Contact your carrier before departure to confirm that your phone will work at your destination and ask which countries are covered, whether a daily or trip pass is available, how much data it includes, what happens when you reach a limit, and how calls and texts are billed. The U.S. Department of State notes that many U.S. plans do not include international service by default; this is U.S.-specific guidance, not a statement about plans elsewhere. U.S. Department of State: communications abroad.
Check your phone’s roaming settings and your carrier’s billing rules before relying on a pass. To prevent cellular service while still using Wi-Fi, Government of Canada guidance describes turning on airplane mode and then manually re-enabling Wi-Fi. Device menus and carrier billing behavior vary, so confirm the steps for your phone and plan. Government of Canada: communication while travelling.

Buy a local physical SIM
A local prepaid SIM can give your phone service from a destination carrier, but two conditions matter: your phone needs a physical SIM slot, and it must be unlocked to accept another provider’s SIM. A SIM that fits is not proof of network compatibility. Check the phone’s supported network bands and technology against the carrier’s requirements, then compare coverage, data allowance, validity period, included voice and texts, activation, and top-up terms.
Rules for visitor SIMs and identity checks vary by country. The U.S. Department of State advises travelers to research local SIM requirements, including possible registration with identification. Check with the destination carrier or an official outlet for current local requirements and availability before you travel. Rely on Wi-Fi and messaging apps
Wi-Fi in accommodation, cafés, airports, or other venues can provide internet access without cellular data roaming. Messaging and calling apps may work over Wi-Fi, but app features and carrier Wi-Fi calling rules differ. Wi-Fi is most practical when your online activity is light or you can plan around known connection points; it does not provide continuous access as you move between them.

Use a portable Wi-Fi hotspot
A pocket hotspot or portable Wi-Fi router connects to a mobile service and shares internet access over Wi-Fi, so a phone without eSIM support can get online without using its own SIM for data. Government of Canada travel guidance describes a MiFi as a wireless modem that can create a personal hotspot for up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices. That is a general capability described in the guidance, not a guarantee for every hotspot model. Hong Kong’s Communications Authority also identifies portable routers as an option for sharing travel data. Government of Canada: communication while travelling; Communications Authority: mobile data options while travelling.
For a hotspot that takes a replaceable SIM, check that the device accepts the SIM’s size, supports the destination carrier’s network bands, and is permitted on that carrier’s plan. You may need to configure the APN manually. NETGEAR advises checking with a carrier in the destination country and notes that APN setup can sometimes be required. Other hotspots use provider-specific or embedded connectivity instead of a replaceable SIM, so verify the exact model and service terms. NETGEAR hotspot support.

A hotspot can be useful when several devices need a shared connection or your phone is locked and cannot take a local SIM. It also means carrying and charging another device, and its service remains subject to local coverage and data limits. No universal cost comparison establishes whether renting or buying is cheaper: include the device, rental, shipping, data, deposit, and return costs when comparing options.

Prepare before you leave
- Check your phone. Identify the model, confirm whether it has a physical SIM slot, check whether it is carrier-unlocked, and look up its supported network bands.
- Ask your home carrier about roaming. Confirm service in each destination, prices, included countries, pass terms, and how to prevent unwanted data use.
- Verify a local SIM or hotspot plan. Check coverage, compatibility, registration requirements, validity, top-up terms, and—if using a hotspot—whether the carrier accepts the device and whether APN setup is needed.
- Prepare for offline access. Download maps and essential travel information, update your devices, save emergency contacts, and learn the destination’s emergency number.
- Test your Wi-Fi fallback. Confirm how your messaging apps, internet calls, and required account authentication will work, and use caution on public networks.
These checks follow guidance from the U.S. Department of State, the Government of Canada, and NETGEAR. Carrier prices, destination coverage, registration rules, and device compatibility can change; verify them for your particular trip.
