To help a cordless tool battery last, keep it cool and dry, use the charger made for its battery platform, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging and storage. Don’t assume every pack should be stored at the same charge level or left on its charger. The right routine depends on the brand and model.
Store batteries in a cool, dry place
Heat and moisture can harm a battery. Keep packs away from damp areas and sustained heat, and avoid leaving them somewhere that gets very hot, such as a vehicle in the sun. Keep the terminals away from loose metal objects that could cause a short.

Manufacturer instructions differ in their specifics. DEWALT advises storing and charging batteries in a cool, dry location. Milwaukee’s lithium-ion battery manual says to store packs at room temperature away from moisture and warns that long-term storage above 120°F (50°C) can cause permanent capacity loss. Those are brand-specific directions, not a universal temperature rule for every battery.

Use the charger specified for your battery
Use a charger approved for your battery platform. Do not assume that a charger from another brand is compatible just because the battery fits or has a similar voltage. Milwaukee directs users to charge its lithium-ion packs only in a Milwaukee lithium-ion charger. Makita describes its compatible Rapid Optimum Charger communicating with its 18V LXT BL1850B battery to monitor current, voltage, and temperature.
That charger communication is a feature of the compatible Makita system; it does not prove that buying a new charger extends the life of every battery. Check the manual for your exact pack and charger before pairing them.

Follow the battery’s own charging and storage instructions
There is no charge percentage or storage routine established here as best for all cordless-tool batteries. Check the battery manual for instructions on charging before storage, whether to remove a pack from its tool, and what to do after a long period unused.
For example, DEWALT says to remove the battery from the tool for extended storage and to fully charge it before storage longer than six months. Milwaukee’s manual says to recharge its packs after about a year of storage. These instructions apply to those manufacturers’ products; do not combine them into a general rule for other brands.
Milwaukee also recommends unplugging chargers and removing batteries when not in use as a general practice. Its note that its own electronics protect against overcharging is specific to its products and should not be assumed of another charger or battery.

Keep batteries clean and dry
Keep packs away from water and solvents. DEWALT recommends cleaning with a slightly damp cloth rather than solvents; Milwaukee likewise warns against water and solvents. Follow your own manual’s cleaning directions and keep the pack dry afterward.

Don’t use or open a damaged battery
Stop using a pack with visible cracks or other damage. Do not open, disassemble, repair, or attempt to service it yourself. Contact the manufacturer or an appropriate service or recycling location for next steps; follow local guidance for disposal. DEWALT specifically says not to use batteries with visible cracks, and Milwaukee warns against disassembling damaged packs.

If a pack needs replacement, choose a genuine battery made for your tool platform and confirm the brand, platform, voltage, and model fit before buying. If you need a charger, confirm that it is compatible with the specific battery. Manufacturer guidance supports matching products to their platforms, not choosing a brand based on unsupported claims that its batteries last longest.

How much longer can good care make a battery last?
The sources cited here do not establish a universal number of extra years or charge cycles that proper care adds. Good storage and manufacturer-approved charging help avoid conditions manufacturers warn against, but a precise lifespan depends on the battery and how it is used. Treat any exact lifespan promise or percentage improvement as unproven unless it is supported for your specific battery under stated conditions.
