Best Ways to Play Windows-Only .NET Games on Linux Without Steam Proton

For most Windows-only .NET games, the best non-Steam approach is a separate Wine environment managed by Lutris, Bottles, or Heroic. Use Heroic when the game is in an Epic, GOG, or Amazon library; choose Lutris for standalone installers and the widest manual control; choose Bottles for a simpler graphical bottle manager; use plain Wine when you want to configure everything yourself. CrossOver is the paid, supported Wine option. If the game depends on Windows-only launchers, anti-cheat, DRM, or components that Wine cannot provide, install Windows in dual boot or use a virtual machine instead.

What “without Steam Proton” means

Steam Proton is a Wine-based compatibility stack integrated into Steam. You do not need Steam to run a Windows executable on Linux: Wine itself can translate Windows API calls into POSIX calls used by Linux and other Unix-like systems. It is a compatibility layer, not a complete Windows-machine emulator, so it avoids much of the overhead of virtual-machine emulation while remaining dependent on the exact game, runtime, graphics path, launcher, and protection system.

For a non-Steam title, the practical equivalent of a Proton prefix is a dedicated Wine prefix or bottle. That directory contains the game’s Windows-style files, registry, DLL overrides, and installed runtimes. Keeping one environment per game prevents a .NET runtime or DLL change for one title from breaking another.

Choose the right route first

Route Best fit Strengths Trade-offs
Plain Wine Experienced users with a standalone installer Maximum control over prefixes, runners, DLLs, and launch commands Most manual setup; Wine API coverage does not guarantee every Windows .NET Framework dependency
Lutris Standalone installers and varied libraries Per-game Wine prefixes, installer scripts, runner selection, and detailed configuration More decisions during setup and troubleshooting
Heroic Games Launcher Epic, GOG, or Amazon games Library integration with selectable Wine runners and a straightforward install flow Compatibility information for one store build may not apply to another
Bottles Users who prefer a clean graphical interface Simple bottle creation, isolation, and runner switching Some games still require manual dependencies or game-specific fixes
CrossOver Users who value commercial integration and support Paid Wine-based product intended to run Windows software on Linux Commercial software; check its current game support and pricing before buying
Windows dual boot or virtual machine Titles that require Windows-specific services Most dependable compatibility with Windows launchers, DRM, and anti-cheat Less Linux convenience; a virtual machine adds configuration and possible performance overhead

There is no universal “best runner.” Start with the runner recommended by the launcher or the game’s own documentation. Change it only when a known issue or an observed error gives you a reason.

Understand the .NET requirement before installing anything

“.NET game” can describe two different runtime situations, and they need different treatment.

Modern, cross-platform .NET

Applications built for compatible modern .NET targets can use Microsoft’s native Linux .NET runtime. That applies only when the game actually ships a Linux-compatible build or otherwise targets a runtime supported on Linux. Installing a Linux runtime does not turn a Windows executable into a Linux application.

Windows .NET Framework

Many Windows-only games target Microsoft .NET Framework. Their executable expects Windows components inside the Wine environment. Wine includes Wine Mono, its open implementation of parts of .NET, but Wine Mono is not a guarantee that every game’s framework version, graphics wrapper, or installer will work. If the title requires additional Windows components, install them in that game’s prefix or bottle rather than globally.

When documentation is unclear, inspect the game’s installer and error message, then test in a fresh environment. A missing framework error, a failure immediately after the launcher starts, or a prompt for a specific Windows runtime points toward Windows components in the prefix. A native Linux build, by contrast, should use the runtime requested by that build’s documentation.

Prepare a clean per-game environment

  1. Identify the distribution. Record whether the game is a standalone installer, an Epic title, a GOG title, or an Amazon title. Note the exact edition and whether the executable is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  2. Record dependencies. Look for requirements covering .NET Framework, graphics APIs, media codecs, launchers, DRM, and anti-cheat. These are separate compatibility questions; a game can launch successfully and still fail when one of them is used.
  3. Create a new prefix or bottle for this game. Give it a descriptive name and keep it separate from other titles. Do not begin by modifying a prefix that already contains unrelated software.
  4. Choose a runner. Use the current runner suggested by Lutris, Heroic, Bottles, or the game’s documentation. Keep a note of the runner version so you can undo a later change.
  5. Install the game. Use the launcher’s installer for store titles or point the manager at the standalone executable. Keep game files and the prefix in locations you back up.
  6. Test before layering on fixes. Launch once, record the exact error, and change one dependency or runner setting at a time. This leaves you with a known-good rollback point.

Set up a game with Lutris

Lutris is the broadest choice when you have a standalone installer, an unusual executable, or several launchers. It exposes a per-game Wine prefix and runner settings without requiring every title to come from one store.

  • Power Supply: 550W 80PLUS Bronze certified power supply ensures stable and energy-efficient operation
  1. Install a recent Wine version on your Linux system. Lutris specifically recommends a recent Wine installation for Windows games.
  2. Open Lutris and add the game through its installer script when one exists, or choose the option to add an existing local installer or executable.
  3. During installation, set a new Wine prefix dedicated to the game. Avoid pointing the installer at a prefix used by another title.
  4. Choose the runner offered by the installer or the current recommended runner. Leave advanced toggles at their defaults for the first launch.
  5. Complete the game’s Windows installer inside that prefix. If it asks for .NET Framework or another Windows component, install it into the same prefix, not into a shared system location.
  6. Open the game’s Lutris configuration when you need to change the runner, executable path, working directory, environment variables, or DLL settings. Change one item, test, and document the result.

Lutris is often the best starting point when a game has a community installer script, but a script is not proof of compatibility with every edition. Confirm that the script matches your store, patch level, and architecture.

Set up an Epic, GOG, or Amazon game with Heroic

Heroic is the natural fit for libraries from Epic, GOG, and Amazon. It lets you select a Wine or Proton runner even though the game is not being launched through Steam.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in to the relevant store account in Heroic and locate the exact game edition you own.
  2. Open the game’s install settings and select a dedicated Wine prefix path. Do not reuse a prefix from a different store build unless you have a specific reason.
  3. Choose the current recommended Wine runner. Heroic can offer Proton runners as well; using one here does not make the game a Steam installation, but it does use that runner’s compatibility code.
  4. Install and launch the game from Heroic. If the title uses a separate launcher, allow that launcher to finish its setup in the same prefix.
  5. Use Heroic’s per-game settings to switch runners or adjust the executable only after you have captured the original failure message.

Do not treat a ProtonDB report as a guarantee for an Epic, GOG, or Amazon build. ProtonDB information is primarily about Steam releases. A different store package can have another launcher, patch, DRM layer, executable, or dependency set, so check reports for the exact edition whenever possible.

Set up a game with Bottles

Bottles is suited to users who want graphical bottle management and easy runner switching without exposing every Lutris option.

  1. Open Bottles and create a new gaming bottle specifically for the title. Name it after the game and select the bottle environment intended for games.
  2. Choose a current Wine runner for the bottle. Keep the initial choice unchanged until you have tested the game.
  3. Use the bottle’s install option to run the game installer, or launch the existing executable from the bottle.
  4. Install any required Windows .NET Framework component, DLL, or other dependency into this bottle. Bottles’ isolation is useful precisely because those changes remain local to the title.
  5. Launch from the bottle and record whether the failure occurs before the game window, at the menu, or during a specific scene. That distinction helps identify launcher, runtime, graphics, or media problems.
  6. Switch runners from the bottle interface only when a release note, game guide, or error indicates that another runner is worth testing.

Bottles reduces the amount of manual path editing, but it cannot supply a Windows component that Wine does not implement. A clean bottle is a troubleshooting advantage, not a compatibility guarantee.

Use plain Wine when you need maximum control

Plain Wine is appropriate for an experienced user who has a standalone installer and wants to manage every prefix and command directly. It has the fewest layers between you and Wine, but also the fewest guardrails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install Wine from your Linux distribution or the Wine project’s supported packages, then confirm that the installed version is recent enough for the game.
  2. Create a new prefix dedicated to the title before running its installer. Keep the prefix path documented so you can recreate or back it up.
  3. Run the Windows installer with that prefix and select the game’s installation directory inside it.
  4. Launch the game using the same prefix. If you run the executable with a different prefix by accident, the game may appear to lose its runtime or registry settings.
  5. Add Windows .NET Framework components or DLL overrides only when the game’s error identifies a need. Make one change, test, and keep a written record.

Plain Wine gives you the most control over architecture and dependencies, but it does not automatically manage installers, store authentication, patches, or game-specific scripts. If that manual work becomes the problem, move the same title into Lutris or Bottles without changing the underlying principle of an isolated prefix.

When CrossOver is worth considering

CrossOver is a commercial Wine-based product for running Windows software on Linux. Its appeal is integration and paid support rather than a fundamentally different compatibility model. You still need to verify the current support status for the exact game and edition, especially when the title uses a separate launcher, anti-cheat, or proprietary DRM.

Choose it when reducing manual configuration and having a supported product matters more than using a free manager. Do not assume that commercial packaging can overcome an incompatibility in a game’s Windows service or protection system.

Check the non-.NET dependencies

Graphics API

Identify whether the game uses DirectX or another graphics API and whether your chosen runner provides the required translation path. A title may pass its launcher and then fail when the renderer initializes. Test the game’s graphics options at their lowest settings first; this distinguishes a renderer failure from a .NET or launcher failure without changing the prefix.

Media codecs

Cut-scenes, intro videos, or audio can fail even when the menu works. Treat missing media support as a separate dependency. A blank video, a crash at the first cinematic, and a game that continues with audio disabled are different symptoms from a framework error.

Launchers and DRM

A store launcher can add authentication, patching, overlay, or DRM requirements that the game executable alone does not reveal. Test the launcher in the same prefix, and do not copy a working executable from one edition into another store’s installation.

Anti-cheat

Anti-cheat services may require Windows kernel or service behavior that Wine cannot provide. If the game fails only when entering an online mode, check its anti-cheat requirement before spending time replacing .NET components.

Troubleshoot by symptom instead of guessing

Symptom Most likely area Next controlled step
Installer will not start Wrong executable architecture, missing Windows runtime, or launcher failure Confirm 32-bit versus 64-bit requirements and retry in a fresh prefix with the documented runtime
Framework or DLL error appears immediately Windows .NET Framework or another component is absent Install the named component inside this game’s prefix or bottle, then retest
Game opens and closes before a menu Runner, graphics API, DRM, or launcher initialization Keep dependencies unchanged and test the current recommended runner; inspect the launcher and graphics requirements
Menu works but video or audio fails Media codec support Check the game’s media requirements and test with cinematics or video options disabled
Offline play works but online mode fails Anti-cheat or online service Verify whether that service supports Wine; if it requires Windows-only behavior, use Windows
One change breaks several games Shared prefix contamination Stop modifying the shared environment and create a separate prefix per title

Do not change the runner, install several runtimes, and replace multiple DLLs in one session. That makes it impossible to tell which change helped and can leave a prefix that is harder to repair than a fresh one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know when to stop tuning Wine

Move the game to Windows dual boot or a virtual machine when repeated, isolated tests point to a Windows-only service rather than a missing configuration. Typical stop signs are a proprietary launcher that will not authenticate, anti-cheat that blocks the game, DRM that fails before the menu, or a required Windows component that Wine does not implement.

Dual boot generally gives the game direct access to Windows drivers and services, at the cost of rebooting and maintaining a Windows installation. A virtual machine keeps Linux running but requires a configured Windows guest and may introduce performance or graphics limitations. No single virtual-machine setup can be called reliable for every game; suitability depends on the title’s graphics load, anti-cheat, and hardware access.

Maintain working installations

  • Keep the prefix or bottle with the game’s files when possible, and back it up before major runner changes.
  • Record the runner, game version, store edition, architecture, and installed Windows components that worked.
  • Update one layer at a time: game patch, launcher, runner, or dependency. Test after each update.
  • Preserve the original installer or an offline installer when the store permits it, so you can recreate a known-good environment.
  • When a prefix becomes confusing, create a new one and reproduce only the documented dependencies instead of continuing to add overrides.

Recommended decision path

  1. Epic, GOG, or Amazon library: start with Heroic and a new per-game prefix.
  2. Standalone installer or unusual launcher: start with Lutris; use its installer script if it matches your edition.
  3. Graphical simplicity is the priority: use Bottles and keep one gaming bottle per title.
  4. You need complete manual control: use plain Wine with a documented prefix and one change at a time.
  5. You want commercial integration and support: evaluate CrossOver for the exact game.
  6. Windows-specific services block progress: stop changing Wine settings and use Windows dual boot or a virtual machine.

The reliable pattern is not a particular launcher; it is matching the manager to the game’s distribution, isolating the environment, identifying whether the executable needs modern .NET or Windows .NET Framework, and treating graphics, media, launchers, DRM, and anti-cheat as separate compatibility checks.
