Best Way to Upload Large Files to a Linux VPS (Reliable, Resumable Methods)

Rsync over SSH is the best default for large VPS uploads, while scp, SFTP, rclone and object-storage staging fit different reliability and workflow needs. This guide includes commands, resume steps, integrity checks and failure recovery.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most large uploads to a Linux VPS, use rsync over SSH. It encrypts the transfer, keeps a partial file when a connection drops, shows progress, and can skip blocks that are already present when you rerun the command. Use scp for a simple one-time copy, SFTP or rclone when you need interactive transfers or tunable concurrency, and object-storage staging when the direct path from your computer to the VPS is unreliable or must run independently of your laptop.

For a Linux VPS with full root access, NVMe storage and AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D hardware, Antihost VPS offers self-managed servers in the USA East, Netherlands and Ukraine, with a 14-day free trial.

Choose the transfer method before you start

The right method depends less on the file extension or nominal size than on what happens if the transfer is interrupted, whether you will repeat it, and where the data is allowed to travel. All four workflows below can use an encrypted SSH transport directly to the server, but they differ in resume behavior, setup effort and dependence on a third-party storage service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Method Best fit Resume and repeat behavior What you need
rsync over SSH Large files, directories, deployments and unreliable links Retains partial data with -P; rerunning can avoid sending data that is already synchronized SSH access and rsync on the relevant ends
scp over SSH A straightforward, one-off copy Simple restart; less control over repeated synchronization and fine-grained resuming SSH access and the scp command
SFTP or rclone SFTP Interactive use, a graphical client, managed SFTP or tunable transfers Depends on the client; rclone offers retries and concurrent writes An SFTP endpoint or SSH server; rclone must be configured for its SFTP backend
Object-storage staging A dropping direct route, several VPSs, or a transfer that must outlive a laptop session Upload and download are separate jobs; multipart uploads handle large objects according to the provider’s limits An object-storage account, credentials and budget for storage, transfer and egress

For a single 100 GB file on a normal SSH-enabled VPS, start with rsync. The other options solve specific operational problems rather than automatically making a transfer faster.

Why rsync is the default for large VPS uploads

rsync compares the source and destination and transfers only the data needed to bring them into sync. That matters after a disconnect: instead of discarding a nearly complete remote file, you can run the same command again and let rsync reuse what is already there. Its -P option combines progress output with partial-file retention.

Rsync runs through SSH in the command below, so authentication and encryption are provided by SSH. The destination path must be writable by the account named in the command, and the filesystem must have room for the complete file plus any temporary or partial data.

rsync -avP --partial --info=progress2 ./large-file user@VPS_HOST:/srv/uploads/
  • -a enables archive-style copying, preserving the usual file attributes and recursing into directories.
  • -v prints the files and actions being processed.
  • -P displays progress and keeps a partially transferred file; --partial is shown explicitly as well so the intent is clear.
  • --info=progress2 reports aggregate progress for the transfer.
  • user@VPS_HOST:/srv/uploads/ identifies the SSH account, host and remote directory.

After an interruption, run the same command again from the same source path. Do not rename or move the partial destination file between attempts. Rsync’s comparison logic can then avoid retransferring data that is already synchronized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copying one file versus a directory

A trailing slash changes directory semantics. With ./dataset/, rsync copies the contents of dataset into the remote target. Without the trailing slash, ./dataset, it copies the directory itself, producing a dataset directory below the target when the destination permits it.

# Copy the directory itself
rsync -avP --partial ./dataset user@VPS_HOST:/srv/uploads/

# Copy only the directory's contents
rsync -avP --partial ./dataset/ user@VPS_HOST:/srv/uploads/

Use a dry run before a destructive or high-value synchronization when you are unsure what will change:

rsync -avP --dry-run ./dataset/ user@VPS_HOST:/srv/uploads/

A dry run lists the proposed actions without sending data. Once the list matches your intention, remove --dry-run.

Prepare the VPS and verify space

  1. Log in with the same deployment account you will use for the copy and create the destination directory if it does not exist.
  2. Make the directory owned by, or writable to, that account. Avoid routinely uploading as root; a restricted account limits the damage from a stolen key.
  3. Check capacity before starting:
    df -h /srv/uploads
  4. Confirm both commands are available on the machine initiating the transfer and, for rsync’s normal remote operation, that the VPS has an rsync installation.
  5. Test SSH separately. A successful login confirms the hostname, account, key and network path before a long transfer begins.

SSH keys are preferable to typing a password during a transfer that may need to be restarted. Protect the private key and, where practical, restrict the account’s permissions and the key’s allowed use.

Control bandwidth when the upload shares your connection

Rsync can be run with a bandwidth limit when a full-speed upload would disrupt other traffic. Choose a limit appropriate to your connection and express it in the unit expected by the command. If you use rclone instead, its documentation gives --bwlimit 10M as an example of a 10 MiB/s upload/download cap.

Limiting throughput increases elapsed time, but it can reduce packet loss and keep video calls, backups or other users from competing with the upload. Measure the result on the actual VPS and route; a faster nominal connection does not guarantee a faster sustained transfer.

When scp is the better choice

scp has a small mental model: copy a local path to an SSH destination. For a one-off file on a stable connection, that simplicity can be useful.

scp -o Compression=no ./large-file user@VPS_HOST:/srv/uploads/

The explicit Compression=no setting avoids spending CPU compressing data that is already compressed or otherwise difficult to compress. For text that compresses well, compression can reduce bytes sent, but it also consumes CPU on the endpoints; decide based on the file and the VPS’s available resources.

Scp is less convenient than rsync for repeated synchronization and detailed resume behavior. If a multi-hour copy fails, you may need to restart it rather than have the tool efficiently reconcile a partial destination. Confirm free space first and keep the source until you have verified the remote copy.

Use SFTP or rclone when you need an interactive or tunable workflow

SFTP is the Secure (or SSH) File Transfer Protocol and is useful when a file manager, graphical client or managed SFTP service is part of your workflow. A plain SFTP client lets you browse directories, create remote folders and upload interactively. It is a good fit for occasional human-operated transfers, but a scripted job is usually easier to reproduce with rsync or rclone.

rclone adds a common command-line interface to many storage systems, including an SFTP backend. It can retry failed operations, run concurrent writes and copy a directory tree from one storage system to another. Configure the remote once, then copy the file:

rclone config
rclone copy ./large-file vps:/srv/uploads/ --progress --retries 5 --low-level-retries 10

During rclone config, create a remote named vps and select the SFTP backend. Supply the VPS host, SSH user, authentication method and remote path requested by the wizard. Store credentials securely and verify the remote with a small test file before moving a very large object.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not tune SFTP packet settings blindly

The documented SFTP payload default in rclone is 32 KiB. Some servers support larger packets, and rclone exposes --sftp-concurrency, --sftp-chunk-size and concurrent-write controls. Larger values can improve performance on a distant server, but oversized settings can also cause EOF errors, lost connections or corrupted transfers on servers that do not support them.

  1. Start with the documented defaults.
  2. Transfer a representative file and watch the server and client for disconnects or errors.
  3. Change one setting at a time, keeping a record of the value and result.
  4. After every tuning change, verify a checksum; higher throughput is not a success if integrity is lost.

Rclone’s retry flags in the example cover ordinary and low-level retries, but they do not remove the need to check the final file. A retry can make a job complete while an application-level problem, wrong destination or insufficient space still leaves you with the wrong result.

Stage through object storage when the direct route is unreliable

With staging, your computer uploads to object storage first, and the VPS downloads from that storage as a separate job. This breaks the dependency on a continuous workstation-to-VPS connection. It is especially useful when a laptop sleeps, changes networks, or cannot remain online for the full transfer; when several VPSs need the same dataset; or when the direct route repeatedly drops connections.

Rclone supports local storage, SFTP, Amazon S3, Backblaze B2 and other backends. S3-compatible backends use multipart uploads for files above the provider’s upload cutoff, with automatic chunk-size adjustment to stay within the provider’s part limit. The exact cutoff, part limits, retention rules and pricing are provider-specific.

# Upload from the workstation to a configured object-storage remote
rclone copy ./large-file staging:bucket/path/ --progress --retries 5

# Pull from staging to the VPS (run on the VPS or through a controlled job)
rclone copy staging:bucket/path/large-file /srv/uploads/ --progress --retries 5

Replace staging with the remote configured for your chosen provider. Keep credentials scoped to the required bucket or prefix, and remove the staged object only after the VPS copy and validation have succeeded.

  • Cost: account for storage duration, upload or download charges and egress from the staging provider.
  • Location: choose a region compatible with latency, data-residency requirements and the VPS location.
  • Retention: set a lifecycle policy or a deliberate deletion point so temporary data does not accumulate.
  • Security: use least-privilege credentials and encrypted transport; do not place long-lived secrets in shell history or publicly readable configuration files.

Staging adds a hop and therefore can cost more and take longer than a healthy direct SSH transfer. Its benefit is operational independence: the upload and download can be retried separately and do not require the same machine to stay connected.

Verify integrity instead of trusting a completed progress bar

A transfer that reaches 100 percent can still be the wrong file, the wrong destination or a file altered by a local problem. When the data matters, calculate a checksum on the source and the VPS and compare the strings.

# On the source computer
sha256sum ./large-file

# On the VPS
sha256sum /srv/uploads/large-file

The hashes must match exactly. For a directory, hash each important file or create a manifest before transfer and verify it after transfer. Keep the original until the remote checksum and the application that will consume the data both validate successfully. Do not delete the source merely because rsync, scp or rclone reported completion.

Recover from common failures

The SSH connection drops

For rsync, rerun the same command with -P and --partial; the retained partial file allows rsync to continue efficiently. For scp, check whether the client left a usable partial file before deciding whether a restart is safe. For rclone, rerun the copy with its retry options and then verify the checksum.

The destination reports “No space left on device”

Stop the job, inspect the filesystem with df -h, and identify whether another mount point is actually receiving the data. Free space or choose a filesystem with enough capacity for the complete file. A partial file may consume most of the available room; remove it only if you are certain you will restart from the beginning.

You receive “Permission denied”

Check the remote account, directory ownership and mode bits. Test by creating a small file in the exact destination directory through SSH. Uploading to a writable staging directory and moving the validated file into a protected application directory can be safer than granting broad write permissions.

The transfer is unexpectedly slow

  • Check whether the source upload bandwidth or VPS download bandwidth is the bottleneck.
  • Test latency and packet loss on the actual route; a high-latency path can make small SFTP packets inefficient.
  • For rclone SFTP, return to the documented defaults if you changed concurrency or chunk size and began seeing disconnects.
  • Consider object-storage staging if the direct route is consistently unstable.
  • Do not assume compression will help: already-compressed archives, videos and disk images often gain little while consuming CPU.

Rclone reports EOF, corruption or connection loss

Oversized SFTP packet or chunk settings are a likely configuration issue when the server does not support them. Restore the defaults, retry a small file, then tune one parameter at a time. Confirm the final checksum before using the data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The command copied the wrong directory level

Inspect the source path’s trailing slash. source/ means “contents,” while source means “the directory.” Run rsync with --dry-run and read the proposed destination paths before sending the full dataset.

A repeatable large-file upload checklist

  1. Decide whether this is a direct SSH transfer or an object-storage staging job.
  2. Confirm the VPS hostname, restricted SSH account, key access and writable destination.
  3. Run df -h on the destination and confirm room for the complete file.
  4. For rsync, use -P and --partial; for rclone, configure the SFTP remote and start with defaults.
  5. Use a dry run for directory copies and check the trailing slash.
  6. Start the transfer in a session that can survive a disconnected terminal when possible, or use staging so the job is independent of the laptop.
  7. After completion, compare sha256sum values and run the application’s own validation.
  8. Keep the source and any staged copy until validation succeeds; then apply your retention and cleanup policy.

Decision guide

If your priority is… Choose Reason
Reliable retries and repeated directory sync Rsync over SSH Partial retention and synchronization-aware retransfers
The fewest concepts for one copy Scp Simple SSH path and familiar source-to-destination syntax
Browsing files or using managed SFTP SFTP Interactive protocol and client ecosystem
Scripted retries across storage types Rclone One interface for SFTP, object storage and other backends, with concurrency controls
A job that must survive a changing local connection Object-storage staging Upload and VPS download can run independently
The lowest operational complexity on a healthy route Direct rsync No third-party staging account or extra transfer hop

In practical terms, make rsync over SSH your default, keep scp for uncomplicated one-off copies, use SFTP or rclone when their interactive or tuning features solve a specific need, and introduce object storage only when reliability, distribution or session independence justifies the extra hop and cost.
