FileZilla cannot grant itself root access or run sudo through an SFTP connection. An SFTP session has the identity of the account that logged in, and Linux checks that account against the file’s owner, group, permission bits and every parent directory in the path. A directory listing only proves that the account can browse; it does not prove that it can open a file for writing.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
The safe method is to connect with the account that should deploy the file, back up the site, verify the exact path, inspect ownership and permissions over SSH when possible, and change only the smallest owner/group or mode setting that solves the problem. If the file belongs to root or another account and your login has no permitted write path, an administrator or hosting provider must correct ownership, grant controlled group access, or perform the edit over SSH.

“Root-protected” is not a FileZilla feature. It describes a normal Unix permission decision made by the server before the SFTP subsystem opens a file. The server evaluates:
- Owner: the account recorded as owning the file.
- Group: the Unix group associated with the file and the groups of the SFTP login.
- Mode bits: read, write and execute permissions for the owner, group and everyone else.
- Directory traversal: the login needs execute permission on every directory leading to the file, even when the file itself is writable.
An SFTP login is authorized as one specific server account. FileZilla does not turn that account into root merely because it can display a root-owned file. The same rule applies whether you use a password or an SSH key.

For example, this listing:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root www-data 1842 Oct 15 09:30 settings.php
shows a file owned by root, with group www-data, and a mode of 644. The owner can read and write; members of the group and other users can only read. A deployment account that is neither root nor a member of www-data cannot save changes, even if FileZilla lets it download the file.
The error usually appears as open for write: permission denied when FileZilla tries to upload a replacement. It is a server-side authorization failure, not a broken text editor or an SFTP transfer setting.
Can FileZilla use sudo or become root?
No. FileZilla’s SFTP client does not provide a “log in as root” switch, and it cannot invoke an interactive sudo command for an individual transfer. SFTP exposes file operations through the account that authenticated to the SSH server; it is not an ordinary shell in which FileZilla can prepend sudo to an upload.
Some servers disable direct root SSH logins entirely, and many hosting plans do not give customers a root-capable account. Do not try random usernames, alter SSH settings, or enable direct root login just to edit one file. Those changes expand the attack surface and may violate the host’s policy.
If an administrator gives you a separate deployment account, use that account in FileZilla. If an administrator must elevate a single change, a controlled SSH workflow is safer: upload a temporary copy to a directory your account can write, have the administrator validate it, then move it into the production path with the intended owner and mode. FileZilla remains the transport; the privileged move happens on the server under an authorized identity.
Prepare before changing a production file
Permission changes can make a site unavailable just as readily as an incorrect code edit. Complete these checks before opening the FileZilla permission dialog:

- Back up the files and database. A file download is not a substitute for a database backup when the application stores settings or content in a database.
- Confirm the environment. Verify the hostname, account and remote path are the intended production site, staging site or development copy. Many hosts expose several web roots with similar names.
- Keep a rollback copy. Download the current file, or create a server-side copy in a writable location, before replacing it. Record the original owner, group and mode.
- Know the change’s scope. Editing one configuration file is different from changing a whole directory tree. Do not apply a recursive operation when a single path is enough.
- Have an administrator contact ready. If ownership is wrong, no FileZilla setting can repair it; you will need a host or system administrator.
WordPress documentation advises using SFTP instead of plain FTP when the host supports it and avoiding permission changes during file replacement unless the existing permissions are known to be incorrect. That principle applies to other web applications as well.
Connect with the account that should own or deploy the file
Use Site Manager and the host’s specified port
- Open FileZilla’s Site Manager and create or select the site entry.
- Set Protocol to SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol.
- Enter the hostname, username and the authentication method supplied by the host. SFTP commonly uses port
22, but use a different port when the host specifies one. - Connect and confirm that the remote pane opens the expected account’s home or web directory.
A successful connection proves only that the credentials are valid. It does not prove that the account can write to the file you need.
Authenticate with an SSH key when required
For FileZilla Pro, a key can be configured under Edit > Settings > Connection > SFTP, or a key file can be selected in the Site Manager entry, depending on the setup. Use the private key intended for this server and protect it with its passphrase. Never upload a private key to the server as a way to “fix” permissions.
Inspect the owner, group and path
Use SSH when shell access is available
FileZilla’s remote listing may show a permission string, but the most reliable inspection is an authorized SSH shell. Run:
ls -l /path/to/file
Then inspect every parent directory:
namei -l /path/to/file
Record the owner, group and mode before changing anything. Ask three questions:
- Is the SFTP account the file’s owner?
- If not, is it a member of the file’s owning group, and does the group have the required write permission?
- If neither is true, does the “other” class have write permission, and is using it acceptable for this server?
The third option is rarely the right long-term design for a web application. A narrowly defined owner or deployment group is easier to audit and less exposed than granting every local account write access.

Read a mode string correctly
In -rw-r--r--, the first character identifies a regular file. The next three characters are owner permissions, the next three are group permissions and the final three are permissions for other users. For directories, the execute bit means “can enter or traverse,” not “can run this directory.” A writable file inside a non-traversable parent directory is still unusable to the SFTP account.
If you do not have SSH access, ask the host to provide the owner, group and mode for the exact path. Do not infer ownership from a FileZilla directory listing or from the fact that another file in the same folder is editable.
Change only a valid mode in FileZilla
Open the File permissions dialog
- In the remote pane, locate the file or the narrowly scoped directory.
- Right-click it and choose File permissions.
- Enter the required numeric mode, or select the individual owner, group and other permission boxes.
- Apply the change only to the named item. Do not select a recursive option unless an administrator has specified exactly which descendants should change.
- Retry the upload or edit, then verify the resulting owner and mode over SSH.
FileZilla can change permission bits when the server permits that operation. It cannot change the file’s owner. If the dialog accepts a mode but the account still cannot write, ownership, group membership or parent-directory traversal is probably the real blocker.
Reveal dotfiles before editing
Files such as .env, .htaccess and other dotfiles may be hidden in the remote pane. Use Server > Show hidden files or Force show hidden files when available in your FileZilla version, then refresh the directory. Hidden status is a display choice; it does not change Unix permissions.
Common permission modes and when they fit
The following values are examples, not universal requirements. The correct mode depends on the host, web-server user and deployment model. Apply the least-permissive value that supports the application.
| Mode | Typical effect | Possible use | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
755 |
Owner can read, write and traverse; group and others can read and traverse. | Common example for web directories. | It does not grant group or other users write access. |
750 |
Owner has full access; group can read and traverse; others have none. | Web directories where access is limited to a deployment or web-server group. | Every process that needs to enter the directory must be in the group or be the owner. |
644 |
Owner can read and write; group and others can read. | Common example for ordinary web files. | The uploading account must be the owner to write with this mode. |
640 |
Owner can read and write; group can read; others have none. | Files that should be readable only by the application group and owner. | Group membership and directory traversal must also be correct. |
600 |
Only the owner can read and write. | Private files that do not need group or public access. | A web process running as another account may fail to read it. |
777 |
Owner, group and others can read, write and traverse. | Generally avoid. | Broad write access is a security risk and can allow unintended changes or code injection. |
For WordPress, hosting guidance commonly cites 755 or 750 for directories and 644 or 640 for files, while noting that the host’s deployment model controls the correct values. Sensitive files such as wp-config.php generally need stricter protection than ordinary media or template files. Do not apply these examples recursively without confirming how the web server and deployment account interact.

When ownership, not mode, is the blocker
Suppose the file is owned by root, but you connect as deploy. Changing 644 to 664 in FileZilla helps only if deploy belongs to the owning group and the group has write access. If the owner and group do not include your account, a mode edit may expose the file to every other local user without giving you a controlled right to edit it.
FileZilla’s own guidance distinguishes permissions from ownership: FTP and SFTP can change permission bits, but not file ownership. Uploaded files belong to the account used to log in. Therefore, use one of these authorized solutions:
| Situation | Appropriate action | Why it is safer |
|---|---|---|
| The SFTP account already owns the file, but the mode is too restrictive. | Set the smallest required mode on that file or its specific directory. | The existing ownership model remains intact. |
| A shared deployment group exists, but the file is not group-writable or the directory is not group-traversable. | Ask an administrator to assign the intended group and set group permissions and directory set-up consistently. | Multiple deployers share access without making the file public to every local user. |
The file belongs to root or an unrelated service account. |
Have an administrator change ownership to the approved deployment account/group or perform the edit and install over SSH. | Ownership is corrected explicitly instead of masking the problem with broad “other” permissions. |
| Your hosting plan does not provide shell or ownership controls. | Open a support request with the exact path, intended owner/group and required operation. | The provider can make a controlled server-side change within its account policy. |
Give the administrator the full path, current owner/group/mode, desired deployment account and a rollback copy. That information avoids an unsafe guess such as recursively changing an entire web root.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A controlled administrator handoff
When you can upload to a writable staging location but cannot write the production directory, use a two-person or two-step workflow:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Back up the production file and record its metadata.
- Upload the proposed replacement to a temporary directory owned by your SFTP account.
- Tell the administrator the temporary path, intended destination, expected checksum or file size, and the maintenance window.
- Have the administrator inspect the content, move it into place over SSH, and set the destination owner, group and mode explicitly.
- Ask the administrator to verify that the application can read the file and that the deployment account retains only the access it needs.
- Keep the old copy until the change has been tested and a rollback is no longer needed.
This pattern separates transport from privilege: FileZilla never handles a root credential, while the privileged operation is auditable in the server’s normal administration channel.
Troubleshoot “open for write: permission denied”
The file downloads but will not save
Downloading requires read permission; saving requires write permission on the destination. Compare the account name with the owner and group from ls -l. If the account is not authorized, stop changing modes and request an ownership or group correction.
Best Value
Changing the mode did not help
Check every parent directory with namei -l. A missing execute bit on one directory prevents traversal. Also confirm that you changed the intended file rather than a similarly named copy in another web root or staging directory.
The file is not visible
Enable Show hidden files or Force show hidden files, refresh the listing and verify the complete filename. Do not create a second visible file with a similar name; applications may continue reading the original dotfile.
The upload works, but the site breaks
Check that the replacement retained the expected owner, group and mode, and that the file was uploaded to the correct environment. Restore the rollback copy if needed. For WordPress, a configuration file that is unreadable by the web-server account can produce an outage even when the file is protected from other users.
A recursive permission change made things worse
Stop and restore from the recorded metadata or a host backup. Recursive changes can alter directories, executable scripts, caches and sensitive configuration files in one operation. Ask an administrator to restore the intended owner/group and apply separate modes for directories and files.
Why chmod 777 is not a fix
Granting read, write and traverse permission to owner, group and other users often makes the immediate error disappear, but it also lets any local account or compromised process modify the file. On a web server, that can turn a writable upload path into a code-injection path. It can also conflict with the web server’s expected ownership and leave a site offline after a later deployment.
Start with the least permissive setting that works: correct owner, approved deployment group, required directory traversal and a file mode limited to the identities that need access. If you cannot identify those identities, involve the host rather than opening the entire tree.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoosing the right fix
Use this decision sequence for a repeatable answer:
- Is the remote path correct? If not, switch to the documented production or staging root before changing anything.
- Does the SFTP account own the file? If yes, adjust only the file or directory mode that is demonstrably too restrictive.
- Is the account in the owning group? If yes, ask whether group write and parent-directory traversal are intentionally enabled; change only those settings if approved.
- Is the file owned by
rootor another account? Do not attempt to defeat that ownership with777. Request an administrator or host correction. - Is this production? Back up files and the database, retain a rollback copy and verify the result after deployment.
- Is there no shell or support path? Explain the exact path and required owner/group to the hosting provider; FileZilla cannot supply the missing authority.
Final verification checklist
- FileZilla is connected with the intended deployment or administration account.
- The connection uses SFTP, normally port
22unless the host specifies another port. - The production or staging path has been confirmed.
- Files and the database have a current backup, and a rollback copy is available.
- The target file’s owner, group and mode are recorded.
- Every parent directory permits the account to traverse the path.
- The mode is the narrowest value that supports the application; no blanket recursive
777was used. - Any ownership change was performed by an authorized administrator or hosting provider.
- The application was tested after the edit, and the original copy remains available until the change is accepted.
The practical answer is therefore straightforward: use FileZilla to connect and transfer as the account that is supposed to deploy the file, use its File permissions dialog only when that account already has the correct ownership or group authority, and move root-owned work into an administrator-controlled SSH or hosting workflow.
