For a normal long page, use Playwright’s full-page screenshot option: await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true }). If the page loads sections or images only when you scroll, first scroll through the page in viewport-sized steps, wait for the content you need to appear, return to the top, and then capture. A full-page screenshot expands the capture area; it does not necessarily trigger scroll-dependent behavior.
Why a full-page screenshot can still miss content
Playwright defines full-page capture as a screenshot of the full scrollable page. That is the simplest choice when the document’s content is already present. But a page may load images, reveal sections, or request more list items only after its visible area moves. Rendering a tall screenshot does not necessarily move the browser’s viewport or fire the real scroll events those behaviors depend on.

Playwright’s GitHub issue tracker describes this limitation for lazy images and iframes, IntersectionObserver-triggered content, reveal animations, and virtualized lists. The issue was opened on May 21, 2026, and closed as a duplicate; a suggested loadLazyContent behavior in the issue is a proposal, not an established Playwright API. Read the Playwright issue.

The reliable pattern is to trigger the page’s own loading behavior with actual scrolling, wait for a meaningful page-specific condition, and then take a full-page screenshot. Adapt the scroll interval and readiness check to the site; no single wait or scroll strategy guarantees completeness on every page.

})();The scroll loop uses the document height measured as it runs. If loading additional content makes the page taller, the loop can continue into the expanded document; still inspect the result because sites can load content in ways a generic loop does not detect. The fixed 250 ms pause is an example, not a universal timing guarantee. For stronger checks, wait for a known section, item count, or application-ready signal.

domcontentloaded waits for the initial document to be parsed, but application content may arrive later. Playwright documents networkidle as at least 500 ms with no network connections, while discouraging it as a general test-readiness condition. Pages with analytics, polling, or other continuing requests may never become idle, and an idle network does not prove that the content you need has rendered. Prefer a locator, assertion, or other condition tied to the target page’s content. Playwright Page API.

Adapt the method to the page type
Ordinary long document
If all sections are already in the document, capture directly with fullPage: true in JavaScript or full_page=True in Python. Playwright also supports capturing a specific element when the whole document is not needed. Its screenshot options include a stylesheet for adjusting dynamic elements when you need more repeatable images. Playwright screenshots guide.
Lazy images and scroll-triggered sections
Scroll down through the page so lazy-loading and IntersectionObserver callbacks have a chance to run. After the pass, wait for evidence that the specific images or sections you need exist or have completed loading. A footer becoming visible can be a useful signal on some pages, but it does not establish that every earlier image has loaded.

Virtualized lists
A virtualized list may keep only nearby rows mounted in the page. A single full-page image can therefore omit rows that were never rendered. For this case, capture while traversing the list or use an export supported by the site. These are practical approaches, not a guarantee that every virtualized interface can be represented in one screenshot.

Inspect and troubleshoot the result
- Content below the fold is missing: The page may require actual scrolling rather than a full-page render alone. Scroll through it, then wait for a page-specific signal before capture.
- Images are blank or incomplete: The image requests may not have started or finished when the screenshot ran. Scroll to their region and wait for an image-specific condition; inspect the saved image rather than assuming navigation completion is enough.
- The page never reaches network idle: Persistent requests can prevent network idleness. Do not treat
networkidleas mandatory; wait for a relevant locator or application condition instead. - The bottom is present but list rows are missing: The interface may be virtualized and may not have mounted off-screen rows. Capture during traversal or use a site-provided export.
- Sticky elements or animations look inconsistent: Scrolling can change sticky positioning and animation state. Inspect the output and, where appropriate, use Playwright’s screenshot stylesheet option to make dynamic presentation more repeatable.
- The screenshot is unusually tall or unwieldy: A full-page image has the dimensions of the page’s scrollable extent. Capture a relevant element or divide the work into sections if a single image is impractical.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright’s full-page option scroll the page for me?
No. It captures the full scrollable extent, but that does not necessarily trigger scroll-dependent loading. Scroll the page first when its content depends on viewport movement.
Should I use an element screenshot instead of a full-page screenshot?
Use an element screenshot when you need one component rather than the entire document; Playwright documents both capture modes.
Is network idle a reliable signal that a long page is ready?
Not by itself. Playwright defines network idle as 500 ms without network connections but discourages it as a general readiness test. Prefer a condition tied to the content you need.
