Start the lecture and watch the OBS audio meter for the source that should capture it. If the meter does not move, OBS is not receiving audio from that source. If it moves, trace the signal onward: monitoring, recording, and the YouTube stream can each reveal where sound is being lost.
Find where the audio signal stops
Work from the lecture playback toward the viewer, changing one thing at a time. A moving meter confirms that audio is reaching that OBS source; it does not by itself prove that OBS is sending audio to YouTube.

- Play the lecture and check the relevant OBS meter. Confirm the lecture itself is playing with sound, then watch the meter for the source expected to capture it.
- If the meter stays still, check capture. Verify the playback output, selected application or desktop device, and source type. The right setup depends on whether the lecture plays in a browser, an OBS media source, or another application, as well as the computer’s operating system. OBS documents these as distinct capture paths; see its Knowledge Base.
- If the meter moves, test OBS monitoring. In OBS, open Edit → Advanced Audio Properties and check the source’s monitoring setting and selected monitoring device. Listen through that device. Also check whether the source is muted, its fader level, and any filters. OBS explains source monitoring in its Audio Mixer Guide.
- Make a short local recording and listen to it. If monitoring works but the recording is silent, inspect the audio output or track selected for recording. If the recording has sound but the live stream does not, that points to a difference in live output or routing; it is a diagnostic clue, not proof of a particular cause.
- Check the encoder’s live output. YouTube recommends checking the sound directly in the encoder and reviewing the local archive and encoder errors when troubleshooting stream quality. Its guidance is in Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
- Compare reports from viewers. If the encoder output has sound but one viewer hears none, check playback on another device or connection. YouTube says an issue reported by one viewer often points to that viewer’s computer or connection; reports from viewers on different connections can indicate an encoder problem.
Use the test results to choose the next check
| What you observe | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The lecture plays, but the OBS source meter does not move | The capture or input path is not reaching that source. | Check playback output, capture device or application, source type, and platform-specific capture steps. |
| The meter moves, but OBS monitoring is silent | The source, its filters, or the monitoring-device path may be wrong. | Check mute and fader state, filters, monitoring device, and Advanced Audio Properties. |
| Monitoring works, but the local recording is silent | Recording output or track selection may differ from monitoring. | Check the selected audio output or track and recording configuration. |
| The local recording has sound, but the live stream does not | Live output or stream routing may differ from local capture. | Check the encoder’s live output and which source or track reaches the stream. |
| The encoder output has sound, but a viewer reports silence | The issue may be specific to that viewer’s playback or connection. | Compare another device or network and review YouTube live metrics. |
These are diagnostic interpretations, not confirmed causes. YouTube’s guidance is to compare encoder output and viewer reports rather than assume that a silent playback on one device means the entire stream is silent.
When the problem comes and goes
A 24/7 schedule does not, by itself, change the first-line audio checks. Note when the sound stops, then check whether the lecture playback remains active and whether the selected device or application changes at that time. A meter that stops moving points back toward playback or capture; a meter that continues moving means you should continue checking monitoring, recording, and live output.
