For one to three active users, plan on roughly 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of RAM and 50–100 GB of fast storage. For five to 20 users, move to about 4 vCPUs, 8 GB of RAM and at least 200 GB, preferably on NVMe. Large photo libraries, previews and collaborative office editing can justify 4–8 vCPUs and 16 GB of RAM.
Those figures are planning estimates rather than Nextcloud limits. Your VPS must run PHP, the web server, database, cron jobs, caching and file previews together, so the server needs substantially more memory than the PHP process minimum shown in the Nextcloud administration manual.

Nextcloud is a self-hosted file-sync and collaboration platform. A VPS supplies the virtual CPU, memory, disk and network resources on which you install Nextcloud and its supporting services. You remain responsible for operating-system updates, TLS certificates, database maintenance, backups, monitoring and security.
A suitable VPS has four characteristics:
- Enough RAM for PHP workers plus the database, web server, Redis, operating-system cache and background jobs.
- Storage capacity for current files, previous versions, trash, thumbnails and backups.
- Predictable CPU and disk performance during uploads, scans, previews and cron activity.
- A provider that offers snapshots or a separate backup destination and lets you resize the instance as usage grows.
Do not size from the number of registered accounts alone. Three people uploading photos at the same time can create more load than 20 rarely active accounts. Count simultaneous users, file sizes, preview generation, full-text search and whether you will run an office suite such as Collabora Online.

How much CPU and RAM does Nextcloud need?
The following tiers are practical starting points for a combined web, database and cache server. They are not official hard limits.
| Workload | Starting CPU | Starting RAM | Storage starting point | What can change the requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal use or 1–3 active users | 2 vCPU | 4 GB | 50–100 GB fast storage | Large photo imports, previews, antivirus scanning and frequent synchronization |
| Small family or team, 5–20 active users | 4 vCPU | 8 GB | 200 GB or more, preferably NVMe | Concurrent uploads, search indexing, many apps and shared folders |
| Heavy media or collaborative office use | 4–8 vCPU | 16 GB | Size from the file library and retention policy | Collabora Online, thumbnail generation and many simultaneous editors |
One 2026 third-party guide lists 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM as a minimum for a very small instance but does not provide a user-count matrix. Treat that as a lower-bound estimate for experimentation, not a dependable production target.

Use active users, not account count
“Active” means users generating work at the same time: syncing desktop folders, uploading phone photos, opening shared files or running searches. If most accounts are dormant, the VPS may be smaller. If a few users synchronize large libraries continuously, choose the next tier up.
Why 4 GB is not the same as “4 GB for PHP”
The Nextcloud administration manual gives per-PHP-process guidance of at least 128 MB, with 512 MB recommended per process. It also recommends a memory_limit of at least 512 MB. Those values describe PHP execution, not the total VPS. MariaDB or PostgreSQL, the web server, Redis, APCu, cron workers, operating-system overhead and filesystem cache all consume memory. Running multiple PHP workers multiplies the per-process allocation.

Leave headroom rather than configuring the VPS to swap under normal load. Swap can prevent an immediate out-of-memory kill, but it is far slower than RAM and can make a busy file server appear to hang.
Storage: capacity, speed and redundancy
Choose capacity from the whole data lifecycle
Personal installations commonly start at 50–100 GB. Families and teams should begin at 200 GB or more. Include current files, Nextcloud file versions, deleted-file retention, generated previews, app data and database growth. A “200 GB files” estimate can therefore require more than 200 GB on the VPS.
Set quotas and retention deliberately. Unlimited versions and trash can consume a disk silently after a large edit or mass deletion. Monitor free space and alert before the filesystem is full; a full disk can stop database writes and background jobs.
HDD versus SSD and NVMe
HDD-backed plans are usually cheaper and can be adequate for ordinary file synchronization. NVMe provides lower latency and higher throughput for database activity, thumbnail creation, scans and many concurrent small files. For a team tier or a photo-heavy installation, NVMe is the safer default. Storage speed does not replace backups: a fast disk that fails still loses data.

Backups are separate from the VPS disk
A snapshot on the same provider is useful for quick rollback but is not a complete disaster-recovery plan. Keep an additional copy in a separate storage system or location, and test restoring both the database and the data directory. Document encryption keys and the procedure for restoring the Nextcloud configuration file.
Database and cache requirements for a reliable installation
Use MariaDB or PostgreSQL in production
For multi-user installations, use MariaDB or PostgreSQL rather than SQLite. The Nextcloud Release 35 administration manual lists MariaDB 10.11, 11.4, 11.8 and 12.3, and PostgreSQL 14 through 18. MariaDB 10.6 is out of support for that release. SQLite is intended for testing and minimal instances, not a busy shared server.
Check the database version supplied by the VPS image before you deploy. An image with an older distribution may install an unsupported database even when the VPS itself has enough CPU and RAM. Plan upgrades so the operating system, PHP and database remain within the versions supported by your Nextcloud release.
Configure APCu and Redis
The manual recommends APCu and Redis for new installations. APCu provides local in-process caching. Redis handles distributed caching and transactional file locking, which prevents conflicting edits and reduces database contention. Configure Redis for file locking even on a single VPS; it becomes particularly important when several users synchronize at once.

Provider comparison for 2026
Prices and specifications in 2026 listings conflict, and the figures below are reported offers rather than guarantees. Confirm the current regional price, billing term, CPU type, storage medium, bandwidth policy, backup options and upgrade path on the provider’s order page before paying.
| Provider | Reported option or characteristic | How it fits Nextcloud | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hetzner | CX22 reported as 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 40 GB NVMe | Matches the small 1–3-user starting tier, although 40 GB is below the 50–100 GB personal-storage guideline | One 2026 review reports a 37.6% shared-vCPU price increase on 15 June 2026, putting CX22 at €5.49 per month. Another listing shows $4.15 per month for the same specification. Currency, region and date differences are unresolved; verify the live price. |
| Contabo | Listings report either 400 GB NVMe with 6 GB RAM for under $6 per month or a 4 GB plan at €5.99 per month | High storage and RAM per dollar can suit a small family installation | The listings do not agree on the specification. One reviewer reports that throughput can fluctuate at peak hours, so evaluate performance and support expectations for your region. |
| DigitalOcean | 2 vCPU, 2 GB RAM and 50 GB SSD reported at $12 per month | CPU and disk are usable for a test or very small deployment, but 2 GB RAM is below the recommended team tier | Choose a larger plan for multi-user production. A managed database add-on is available if you prefer to separate database operations. |
| Vultr | Entry plan reported with 1 GB RAM | Too small for a normal Nextcloud installation | Consider it mainly when you need attachable block storage and will select a larger compute plan. |
There is no universal winner in this table. The correct choice is the least expensive option that meets your tier with measurable headroom, has storage you can expand, and provides backups you can actually restore. A low monthly price is not a bargain if noisy-neighbor contention, an unsupported database image or inadequate disk space forces a migration.
A practical VPS selection process
- Estimate active concurrency. Record how many people will sync or edit at the same time, not just how many accounts you will create.
- Calculate storage. Add current files, expected growth, versions, trash, previews and at least one local backup window. Choose 50–100 GB for a light personal instance or 200 GB or more for a family or team, then increase it for media.
- Pick a starting tier. Use 2 vCPU/4 GB for 1–3 active users, 4 vCPU/8 GB for 5–20, and 4–8 vCPU/16 GB when Collabora or large photo processing is central.
- Check the image and software versions. Confirm a supported PHP release, MariaDB 10.11 or newer from the supported series, or PostgreSQL 14–18, plus the ability to install APCu and Redis.
- Verify disk and network details. Distinguish NVMe from generic SSD or HDD, check whether bandwidth is metered, and identify any I/O or CPU limits on shared plans.
- Price the complete service. Add backups, snapshots, extra volumes, managed databases, IPv4 charges and taxes where applicable. Record the currency, region, billing term and date because listings change.
- Plan an upgrade. Confirm that RAM, vCPU and storage can be expanded without rebuilding the server, or document a migration path before users depend on it.
Installation and hardening checklist
A VPS is not secure merely because it is hosted in a cloud. Work through these tasks before inviting users:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Install a currently supported Linux distribution and apply security updates.
- Create a non-root administrative account, use SSH keys, disable password login where practical and restrict SSH with a firewall.
- Point DNS to the server, issue a TLS certificate and redirect HTTP to HTTPS before synchronizing private files.
- Install the web server, a supported PHP version, MariaDB or PostgreSQL, APCu and Redis.
- Create a dedicated database and database user with only the permissions Nextcloud requires.
- Set the PHP
memory_limitto at least 512 MB and size the number of PHP workers so their possible combined memory use leaves room for the database and cache. - Configure system cron for Nextcloud background jobs rather than relying on web requests to trigger them.
- Set Redis for transactional file locking and verify that APCu is enabled for local caching.
- Enable automatic security updates where they will not unexpectedly replace pinned application components; otherwise schedule and test updates manually.
- Configure backups for both the database and the Nextcloud data/configuration directories, encrypt them where appropriate, and perform a test restore.
Measure after deployment and resize deliberately
Start with the mid-tier estimate when your workload is uncertain, then measure. Watch RAM usage, swap activity, CPU saturation, disk latency, free space, database size, cron duration and failed background jobs. Check performance during a representative upload and synchronization period rather than during an idle afternoon.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Preview generation, background scans and Collabora add load beyond a bare file-sync installation. If RAM remains constrained or swap grows, move up a tier before adding more apps. If CPU is saturated while RAM is comfortable, add vCPUs. If disk latency is the bottleneck, moving from HDD to NVMe can help more than adding CPU. If storage is filling, expand the volume and review versions, trash and retention policies instead of deleting files blindly.
Which configuration should you buy?
For one person or a couple
Choose at least 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 50–100 GB of fast storage. A 40 GB plan can run the software but leaves little room for versions, previews and growth. If the library is mostly documents and you keep external backups, HDD-backed storage may be acceptable; NVMe gives a smoother experience during scans and imports.
For a family or small team
Choose about 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM and 200 GB or more. Use MariaDB or PostgreSQL, APCu and Redis from the beginning. Favor NVMe when several phones upload photos or users edit shared folders concurrently. Make backups and restore testing part of the initial setup rather than an afterthought.
For media-heavy or office-collaboration workloads
Begin at 4–8 vCPU and 16 GB RAM. Collabora Online and large photo libraries generate additional CPU, memory and background-job load; one 2026 guide places 10-plus-user Collabora deployments in an 8–16 GB RAM range. Treat that as planning guidance and validate it against your concurrency and document sizes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon mistakes and their fixes
- Buying the cheapest 1 GB plan: this leaves no practical room for the database and PHP workers. Start at the small-user tier instead.
- Using SQLite for a team: migrate to MariaDB or PostgreSQL before inviting multiple users.
- Ignoring versions: an old image can install an unsupported database. Verify the versions against the Nextcloud release you will run.
- Counting only file capacity: versions, trash, previews and backups consume disk. Set quotas and alerts.
- Skipping Redis: without proper transactional locking, concurrent synchronization can produce contention and conflicts.
- Trusting a stale price: provider offers vary by region, currency and date. Recheck every figure at checkout.
- Assuming snapshots equal backups: keep a separate copy and test restoration of the database and files.
- Deploying Collabora on an undersized server: office editing can require the 16 GB tier even when ordinary file sync did not.
Bottom line
For most new deployments, target 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM for up to three active users, or 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM for five to 20. Allocate 50–100 GB for personal use and 200 GB or more for a family or team, choosing NVMe when previews, photos or collaboration make disk latency visible. Use a supported MariaDB or PostgreSQL release with APCu and Redis, configure a 512 MB PHP memory limit, and keep tested off-server backups. Compare the current regional offers from the providers above only after checking their live specifications and billing terms; the reported 2026 listings are not consistent enough to treat any quoted price as permanent.
