Start with Spark, not a random plugin. Profile the server while the lag is happening, identify whether the cost comes from chunks, entities, redstone, commands, or something else, and then apply the smallest targeted fix. On current Paper servers, Spark is bundled from Paper 1.21 onward, and Paper’s documentation treats it as the performance command to rely on. Use Chunky when unexplored terrain causes generation spikes, and add entity-limit plugins only when profiling proves that mobs or dropped items are the problem.
What “lag” means on a Minecraft server
Players use “lag” for several different failures. Separating them prevents you from installing a plugin that cannot fix the real bottleneck.

Everyone sees delayed block breaks, redstone, mob movement, and command responses.
- High tick time: individual ticks take too long, producing low TPS. A short spike may be harmless; sustained high tick time requires investigation.
- Network latency: the server may be healthy while a player’s connection is slow or unstable. A performance plugin will not repair an overloaded route or weak Wi-Fi.
- Client rendering lag: one player’s computer cannot render the view. Lowering server simulation work will not necessarily raise that player’s frame rate.
The recommendations below target server-side simulation and chunk work on Paper and compatible Spigot forks. Confirm that each plugin supports your exact Minecraft and server version before installing it.
Profile first: Spark is the essential starting plugin
Changing settings before measuring often moves the bottleneck or creates new gameplay bugs. Spark shows which tasks consume tick time, how the server thread is spending time, and whether a suspected plugin is actually responsible.

Use Spark on Paper 1.21 and newer
Paper bundles Spark beginning with version 1.21. Paper’s profiling guidance says the older Timings system has been unmaintained for multiple years. On supported Paper builds, use Spark rather than relying on Timings tutorials written for older releases.
Capture a profile during the problem
- Reproduce the lag: have players explore the affected area, load the farm, or perform the command that triggers the slowdown.
- Run
/spark profiler start --timeout 600from the console or as an operator. - Allow the ten-minute capture to finish while the server is under representative load.
- Open the report URL Spark returns and inspect the hottest branches. Look for chunk generation, entity ticking, block entities, redstone, scheduled tasks, or a particular plugin.
- Record the time, player count, loaded worlds, and activity during the capture. Repeat once if the first profile covered an unusual one-off event.
Do not interpret a plugin’s name in the report as proof that it is faulty. A plugin may appear because it is calling an expensive vanilla operation, or because the workload itself is unusually large. Compare profiles before and after one change.

- Chunk generation or loading dominates: pregenerate the play area with Chunky and review view and simulation distances.
- Thousands of entities or item stacks dominate: remove the excess safely, then enforce a sensible cap.
- A single plugin task dominates: check its configuration and update or replace it; adding another optimization plugin may make the conflict worse.
- Nothing obvious appears: capture during the exact incident, check disk and CPU saturation at the host, and distinguish network delay from tick delay.
Chunky: prevent exploration and world-generation spikes
New terrain is expensive because the server must generate, populate, light, save, and send chunks. A group of players flying into untouched territory can therefore cause a sudden TPS collapse even when the existing base runs smoothly.
Pregenerate before players arrive
- Install the Chunky plugin compatible with your Paper or Spigot version and restart the server.
- Choose the world and center point you want to prepare. Use a conservative radius first so you can estimate disk space and generation time.
- Start with the documented example command
chunky radius 5000after selecting the appropriate world and center in Chunky. - Run the generation while the server is empty or during a maintenance window. Monitor CPU, memory, disk throughput, and TPS rather than assuming a larger worker count is always faster.
- Stop or pause the job if players need to join and the profile shows generation is consuming the tick budget; resume it later.
A radius of 5,000 blocks represents a very large area. It is an example, not a universal setting: calculate the area your community actually explores, and leave a margin for future expansion. Pregeneration trades time and storage for smoother first exploration; it does not reduce the cost of every chunk that remains loaded during play.
Worker-thread adjustment on Paper
Chunky’s FAQ suggests adding -DPaper.WorkerThreadCount=X to the server start script, where X is the desired worker-thread count. Treat this as a controlled experiment. Too many workers can compete with the main thread, database work, or other services, especially on a host with few CPU cores. Change one value, profile again, and keep the setting only if it improves generation without harming live TPS.

Do not confuse the plugin with the Fabric mod
A third-party Fabric mod called Chunky Pregenerator uses Chunky as its backend. It is not the official Chunky plugin for a Paper server. Select the package built for your server platform, and do not install a Fabric mod into a Bukkit/Paper plugins directory.
Entity controls: use limits only when entities are proven to be the cost
Large animal breeders, villager halls, mob grinders, and piles of dropped items can consume substantial tick time. Entity plugins are a targeted response, not a general “make the server faster” switch.
ClearLag for item cleanup and broad entity controls
ClearLag can remove ground items and apply entity limits. Automatic cleanup is risky: a valuable tool, rare drop, or building material may disappear before a player collects it. If you use an automatic rule, configure an explicit whitelist for items that must never be removed, announce the cleanup interval, and test it in a disposable world first.
- Prefer warnings and manual cleanup while diagnosing the problem.
- Use short-lived, clearly announced cleanup for emergencies rather than hiding item loss.
- Review which worlds, entity types, and item classes the rule affects.
- Check server logs after enabling the rule so failed permissions or syntax do not silently disable it.
MobLimiter or FarmLimiter for concentrated farms
MobLimiter and FarmLimiter are better suited to strict caps inside a defined block radius, such as a livestock farm that has grown beyond a practical size. Radius-based limits preserve normal mob behavior elsewhere while preventing one base from accumulating an unbounded population. Set a cap that fits the farm’s purpose, explain the policy to players, and verify whether the plugin removes, prevents spawning, or blocks breeding before deploying it on a production world.
When not to add an entity plugin
If Spark shows chunk generation, redstone, block entities, or a different plugin at the top, an entity cap adds complexity without addressing the cause. Removing mobs can also change farms, villager mechanics, and player expectations. Fix the measured bottleneck instead.

Paper’s built-in activation settings
Paper can stop distant entities from receiving every AI tick. These controls are in spigot.yml and should be tuned after profiling, not copied blindly from a preset.
| Category | Paper default activation range | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Animals | 32 blocks | Animal AI and related ticking outside the active range are throttled. |
| Monsters | 32 blocks | Hostile-mob activity is throttled when players are farther away. |
| Miscellaneous | 16 blocks | Miscellaneous entity categories receive the configured activation behavior. |
| Raiders | 64 blocks | Raiders use a larger default range for raid gameplay. |
The defaults are documented in Paper’s spigot.yml reference. A category set to zero or a negative number turns throttling off for that category, which means entities in that category are not limited by activation range. That is the opposite of a performance reduction, so use such values only when you deliberately need vanilla-like ticking.
Villager trade caveat
Paper also exposes a setting that controls whether inactive villagers tick. Disabling ticking for inactive villagers means they do not work exactly as they do in vanilla, and their trades restock only while players remain nearby. Do not change this on a trading server without telling players and testing restock behavior, workstations, and scheduled villager tasks.
Vertical activation range is not a confirmed feature
A PaperMC GitHub discussion proposes a separate vertical activation range. The proposal is not confirmation that the setting was merged. Do not publish a configuration based on it or add an option to production files unless your installed Paper build documents that option.
A practical lag-reduction workflow
- Define the symptom. Note whether all players see low TPS, one player has high latency, or clients merely render slowly.
- Capture Spark data. Profile during the incident for up to 600 seconds and save the report URL and server version.
- Classify the bottleneck. Put it into chunk generation, entities/items, a plugin task, block entities/redstone, or an external resource limit.
- Apply one change. Pregenerate with Chunky for exploration spikes, add an entity limit for measured entity overload, or adjust one Paper activation setting.
- Retest the same scenario. Use a comparable player count and activity. A change that helps an empty server may hurt a busy one.
- Document and roll back safely. Back up configuration and worlds, record the old value, and revert if gameplay changes or TPS worsens.
Never stack several “optimization” plugins at once. Overlapping cleanup, mob limits, and activation logic can fight each other, make debugging impossible, and create irreversible item or entity removal.

Common mistakes and fixes
Installing a lag-fix bundle without a profile
Symptom: the server feels different, but TPS is unchanged or gameplay breaks. Fix: remove unneeded plugins, restore the last known-good configuration, and profile the original incident.
Pregenerating while the server is full
Symptom: exploration preparation causes worse live lag. Fix: pause generation, schedule it before launch or during maintenance, and reduce worker concurrency.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Clearing valuable items
Symptom: players report missing drops after an automated announcement. Fix: disable automatic removal, restore from backup where possible, and create a tested whitelist before re-enabling any cleanup.
Changing activation ranges too aggressively
Symptom: farms stop working, mobs appear frozen, or villagers fail to restock. Fix: return to documented defaults, change one category at a time, and test at the distances players actually use.
Blaming a plugin named in Spark
Symptom: removing a plugin does not improve TPS. Fix: inspect the full call path and workload. The plugin may simply be the caller for an expensive operation caused by a farm, world, or player action.

What about other performance plugins?
FastAsyncWorldEdit
FastAsyncWorldEdit is intended for large editing operations and is described in secondary guides as performing edits asynchronously to reduce the impact of massive builds. It is a building tool, not a replacement for profiling, chunk pregeneration, or entity controls. Verify compatibility and test large edits away from the production world.
EntityTrackerFixer and ViewDistanceTweaks
EntityTrackerFixer is presented as a targeted optimization for inefficient entity tracking, while ViewDistanceTweaks adjusts view and simulation distance based on server health. Evidence for both is limited compared with Paper’s own documentation and Spark. Treat them as optional experiments only after you have a reproducible profile, a backup, and a rollback plan.
Entity culling
No dedicated entity-culling plugin is established here as a broadly recommended server solution. Paper’s activation-range configuration is the documented built-in mechanism for reducing distant entity ticking; do not assume a client-side culling mod will lower server simulation cost.
Choosing the right fix
| Observed Spark result | First action | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Chunk generation/loading is dominant during exploration | Pregenerate the intended area with Chunky before players join. | Running a large generation job during peak play. |
| Ground items or mobs dominate near a farm | Clean up safely, then use a tested radius cap with MobLimiter or FarmLimiter. | Unannounced global deletion and unreviewed caps. |
| Distant entities consume tick time | Review Paper activation ranges in spigot.yml. |
Setting ranges to zero or negative values without understanding that throttling is disabled. |
| Villager ticking is costly | Test the inactive-villager setting and document the trade-restock behavior. | Assuming villagers remain vanilla while inactive. |
| A plugin task is dominant | Check its configuration, version, and compatibility; compare a profile with it disabled in a test copy. | Adding another optimizer on top of the suspected fault. |
| No server-side bottleneck appears | Check host CPU, memory, disk, network path, and client frame rate. | Expecting a Bukkit plugin to fix a player’s internet or graphics hardware. |
Requirements and safe rollout checklist
- Run a supported Paper or compatible Spigot fork and verify every plugin’s Minecraft-version compatibility.
- Back up worlds and configuration before enabling cleanup, entity removal, or activation changes.
- Have console access and a tested rollback procedure.
- Profile with representative players and activity rather than an empty server.
- Tell players about changes that affect farms, villagers, item drops, or exploration.
- Keep a written record of each changed setting, the previous value, and the observed result.
- Do not treat a hosting blog’s claimed percentage improvement as a benchmark. No independent study establishing a universal percentage gain was identified for these plugins.
FAQ
Is Spark a lag-fix plugin?
Spark is primarily a profiler. It helps you locate the work consuming tick time; it does not automatically optimize every server. On Paper 1.21 and newer it is bundled, so install a separate copy only when your platform or version requires it.
Should I use ClearLag on every server?
No. Use it when profiling shows excessive ground items or entities and configure conservative, transparent rules. Automatic deletion can remove valuable drops, so whitelist protected items and test before production use.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How large should my Chunky radius be?
Use the smallest area that covers normal player travel and planned builds. The documented chunky radius 5000 command is an example, not a requirement; a 5,000-block radius can require substantial generation time and storage.
Will lower entity activation ranges break farms?
They can. Farms, mob behavior, and villager mechanics depend on ticking distance and category. Change one category at a time, test at realistic player positions, and preserve the original values for rollback.
Can a plugin guarantee a percentage TPS improvement?
No universal figure is established. The result depends on the world, hardware, player count, plugin mix, and the measured bottleneck. Treat percentage claims without reproducible benchmarks as marketing rather than a promise.
