Best Paperclip AI Hosting in 2026: VPS Options Compared

A practical 2026 guide to hosting Paperclip AI: start with 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM and 50 GB SSD, run Node.js 24.11.0+ with pnpm, plan for PostgreSQL 17, and scale for concurrent local agents.

The best starting point for Paperclip AI in 2026 is a general-purpose Linux VPS with 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of RAM and at least 50 GB of SSD storage. Install Node.js 24.11.0 or newer with pnpm, use embedded PostgreSQL for a simple deployment or PostgreSQL 17 for a managed database, and place the service behind HTTPS with authentication. That specification is a practical baseline rather than a universal limit: the official Paperclip guide says 1 vCPU and 2 GB of RAM can get a small instance running, while concurrent local agents can require substantially more.

There is no evidence-based single “best” VPS company. The meaningful choice is between a conventional VPS, a platform deployment such as Railway, or a larger cloud server, based on how many agents you will run, whether agents execute locally or elsewhere, and how much administration you want to handle.

What Paperclip AI hosting actually means

Paperclip is open-source orchestration software for coordinating AI agents. Its repository describes the project as “Open-source orchestration for zero-human companies.” It is not a dedicated appliance and does not require a special Paperclip server: you rent a Linux machine, install the application and its dependencies, then expose the web interface and API securely.

The application can be installed with an npx-based setup or from source with Node.js and pnpm. A Docker deployment is also possible. Paperclip itself does not perform model inference, so the VPS does not need a GPU. Agents normally call an external model provider, which means you need at least one Anthropic or OpenAI API key before agents can do useful work.

Recommended VPS specifications

For most personal projects and small teams, start with 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of RAM and 50 GB of SSD or NVMe storage. This gives the operating system, Paperclip, its database and a few active agent sessions room to coexist without immediately competing for memory. Choose a larger plan if several local agents are active at the same time, if agents run build tools or browsers, or if you retain substantial logs and artifacts.

Use case vCPU RAM Storage How to interpret it
Smallest documented start 1 2 GB Not stated The official installation guide says this is enough to get started on a Linux VPS. Expect little headroom for concurrent local agents.
Practical first VPS 2 4 GB 50 GB SSD DeployHQ documents this as a minimum configuration and it is a sensible general-purpose baseline.
Compact disk footprint 2 4 GB 10 GB SSD A Contabo guide uses this as an example with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. It leaves less room for images, logs and databases.
More comfortable starter 3 6 GB 50 GB NVMe Virtarix presents this as a starter VPS example, not as a measured Paperclip requirement.
Approximately 20 concurrent agents 8 16 GB 200 GB NVMe Contabo’s sizing advice for about 20 concurrent agents. This is vendor guidance, not an independent benchmark.

The 50 GB recommendation is about operational margin, not a requirement imposed by the Paperclip binary. A 10 GB disk can boot the software, but container layers, PostgreSQL data, backups, package caches and agent-generated files can consume that space quickly. If you select a small disk, monitor usage from the beginning and send backups to separate storage.

Node.js and pnpm: the version issue to resolve first

Plan around Node.js 24.11.0 or newer and pnpm. That is the version requirement stated in Paperclip’s official installation guidance and should take precedence over older hosting tutorials that mention Node.js 18, 20 or 22.

Paperclip’s CLI documentation says that npx installations or servers using Node.js 22 or 23 may print an unsupported-version warning and continue. Continuing past a warning does not make that runtime supported; use Node.js 24.11.0 or later for a production deployment.

Verify the runtime before installing Paperclip

  1. Connect to the VPS over SSH and check the runtime with node -v.
  2. Confirm pnpm is available with pnpm --version.
  3. If the Node version is below 24.11.0, change the runtime before installing Paperclip rather than suppressing the warning.
  4. Install Paperclip using the npx or source procedure in the current official guide, then run the documented startup command, paperclipai run, when using the CLI path.

There is an important packaging inconsistency: the official guide’s example NodeSource command installs a 20.x repository even though the same guide requires Node.js 24 or later. Do not assume that command produced a compliant runtime. Always check node -v after installation and select a Node.js 24 repository or installer if necessary.

Database choices: embedded PostgreSQL or PostgreSQL 17

Running paperclipai run can create an embedded PostgreSQL instance. That is convenient for a single VPS, testing, or a small internal deployment because you do not have to provision a separate database service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an external PostgreSQL service when you need independent backups, separate scaling, high availability or a database that survives replacement of the application server. Several deployment guides plan for PostgreSQL 17, and one guide specifically states that Paperclip’s Drizzle ORM does not support MySQL or MariaDB. Treat PostgreSQL 17 as the safe planning target. If you use your own database, supply its connection string through the configuration method described in Paperclip’s current documentation.

When embedded PostgreSQL is appropriate

  • One Paperclip installation on one VPS.
  • Development, evaluation or a small private workspace.
  • You have a tested backup of the database directory and configuration.

When to separate the database

  • Multiple application instances need the same state.
  • You need managed backups, point-in-time recovery or failover.
  • Database growth and agent activity are large enough to compete with the application for RAM or disk I/O.

How agent count changes the VPS size

Paperclip’s web application is only part of the workload. The main variable is what each agent does and how many sessions are awake in the same time window. Agents that make HTTP calls to workers running on other machines leave the VPS hosting Paperclip and PostgreSQL with a relatively light workload. Agents that execute local CLIs, compile code, manipulate files or run browser automation consume CPU, memory and temporary storage on the VPS.

A useful progression is:

Workload pattern Starting capacity Upgrade trigger
Evaluation or one light local agent 1–2 vCPUs, 2–4 GB RAM Swap activity, slow UI responses or process termination under a second session.
Several light agents or a small team 2–4 vCPUs, 4–8 GB RAM, 50 GB or more Concurrent sessions consume most memory or CPU for sustained periods.
Many local agents and build workloads 4–8 vCPUs, 8–16 GB RAM, 100–200 GB NVMe Queue delays, exhausted disk, or repeated out-of-memory events.
About 20 concurrent agents 8 vCPUs, 16 GB RAM, 200 GB NVMe Use this only as a vendor sizing reference; measure your own workload before committing.

Railway’s deployment image sets a 4 GB Node heap ceiling and recommends at least 2 GB once agents run inside the container. A heap ceiling is not the same as total machine RAM: the operating system, PostgreSQL, container runtime and other processes still need memory.

VPS, cloud server or platform deployment?

Conventional VPS

A VPS is the most direct fit when you want root or administrative access, predictable resources and control over the Linux image. You manage Node.js, pnpm, PostgreSQL, updates, firewall rules, TLS certificates, backups and monitoring. This model works well for a long-lived private installation, but it also makes you responsible for maintenance.

Large cloud-server instances

AWS, Google Cloud, DigitalOcean and Hetzner are listed in Paperclip’s documentation as cloud-server choices. Their advantage is a broad selection of regions, disks and automation tools. Their billing models and networking options differ, so compare the actual monthly compute, storage, snapshot and outbound-transfer charges for your region rather than assuming a provider is cheapest.

Railway template

Railway offers a one-click Paperclip template. This is a platform deployment, not a conventional VPS: the platform handles more of the underlying provisioning, while you work within its service, volume and database model. The template bundles PostgreSQL 17 and uses a 4 GB Node heap ceiling. It can shorten initial setup, but platform-specific limits and usage charges should be checked for your workload.

Why shared hosting is a poor fit

Shared hosting generally does not provide the server-level access, Node.js version control, pnpm support or long-running process management Paperclip needs. Choose a VPS or a platform that explicitly supports Node.js 24.11.0+, persistent services and PostgreSQL instead.

Installation paths

Native Linux installation

  1. Create an Ubuntu or another supported Linux VPS with at least the practical baseline specification.
  2. Connect with SSH, apply operating-system updates and create a non-root administrative workflow.
  3. Install Node.js 24.11.0 or newer and pnpm. Verify both versions before continuing.
  4. Install Paperclip through the npx route or clone and install from source according to the current official instructions.
  5. Start the service with the documented CLI command. A local run can create embedded PostgreSQL; an external connection string can be supplied instead.
  6. Configure a domain name, HTTPS termination and authenticated access before exposing the service to the public internet.

Docker Compose

DeployHQ documents a Docker Compose approach with a PostgreSQL 17 container and an authenticated production mode. Containers make the application and database versions easier to reproduce, but they do not remove the need for volume backups, updates, firewall rules and resource monitoring. Allocate persistent volumes for PostgreSQL and Paperclip data rather than relying on a container’s writable layer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security and production access

Use a registered domain and HTTPS for any internet-facing instance. Require login for every user and enable Paperclip’s documented authenticated deployment mode; do not treat a private URL as authentication.

One third-party deployment guide reports the application listening on 127.0.0.1:3100 behind a reverse proxy. Treat that port and binding as an example, not a universal default: confirm the current Paperclip configuration before writing firewall or proxy rules. The reverse proxy should be the internet-facing component, with the application bound privately where the deployment supports it.

  • Allow SSH only from trusted addresses where practical, and use key-based authentication.
  • Open only the ports required for SSH, HTTPS and any explicitly documented service.
  • Keep API keys out of source repositories and shell history; use the deployment’s secret or environment-variable mechanism.
  • Back up PostgreSQL and Paperclip configuration before upgrades or production changes.
  • Test a restore on a separate instance so a backup is known to be usable.

Storage, backups and monitoring

Storage planning should include the operating system, Node and pnpm caches, Docker images if applicable, PostgreSQL growth, logs, uploaded files, agent workspaces and backup staging. A 50 GB disk is a reasonable starting point; a 10 GB example can work only when data retention is tightly controlled and backups are external.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitor four signals: memory pressure, CPU saturation, disk percentage and database size. If the kernel kills Node or PostgreSQL, add RAM before adding vCPUs. If CPU remains saturated while memory is comfortable, add vCPUs or reduce simultaneous agent work. If disk usage rises steadily, set log retention, remove unused images and move backups off the VPS.

Costs and what can be compared

No verified prices were available for the providers or configurations described here, so a reliable “cheapest” or “best value” ranking cannot be stated. Your monthly bill normally consists of compute, disk, snapshots or backups, bandwidth and any managed database or platform fees. A larger VPS can cost less than repeatedly troubleshooting an undersized machine, but paying for unused capacity is also wasteful.

When requesting quotes, compare like-for-like resources: dedicated versus shared vCPUs, SSD or NVMe performance, included transfer, backup charges, billing granularity, region availability and the provider’s process for resizing. Confirm that the offered image can run Node.js 24.11.0 or newer; a low-priced image locked to an older Node release is not an equivalent option.

Troubleshooting common failures

Unsupported Node.js warning

Check node -v. If it reports 22, 23 or an older release, install Node.js 24.11.0 or newer and restart the installation. Do not interpret a warning followed by a successful launch as proof that the runtime is supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Out-of-memory termination

Inspect system memory and swap usage while agents run. Stop unnecessary local agents, move heavy workers to another machine or resize to at least 4 GB RAM. A 4 GB Node heap setting still leaves memory requirements for PostgreSQL and the operating system.

Database connection errors

Confirm that PostgreSQL is running, that the connection string points to PostgreSQL rather than MySQL or MariaDB, and that the database version and credentials match the deployment. If using embedded PostgreSQL, verify that its data directory is persistent and writable.

Service works on localhost but not through the domain

Check DNS, the reverse-proxy target, firewall rules and TLS certificate issuance. Confirm the application’s actual listening address and port instead of assuming the example 127.0.0.1:3100 value.

Agents do not execute

Check that at least one supported Anthropic or OpenAI API key is configured, that outbound HTTPS traffic is allowed, and that the agent’s adapter has access to the resources it needs. Paperclip orchestrates calls; it does not supply the model account or infer responses locally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose a general-purpose Linux VPS rather than shared hosting.
  • Use 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM and 50 GB SSD as the default starting specification.
  • Use Node.js 24.11.0 or newer with pnpm.
  • Plan for PostgreSQL 17, using embedded PostgreSQL for simple single-server deployments.
  • Scale RAM and CPU according to simultaneous local agents, not merely the number of configured agents.
  • Skip GPU spending unless another workload on the same server needs one.
  • Put a domain, HTTPS and authentication in front of any public instance.
  • Back up the database and configuration before upgrades, and verify restores.
  • Compare providers on resources, region, transfer, backups and management model; no provider is proven best by the available evidence.

Verdict

For a first production-minded Paperclip installation in 2026, rent a Linux VPS with 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of RAM and 50 GB of SSD, install Node.js 24.11.0 or newer with pnpm, and use PostgreSQL 17 or the embedded database for a small single-server setup. Move to 8 vCPUs, 16 GB of RAM and roughly 200 GB of NVMe only when measured concurrent-agent activity justifies it. A VPS is the most flexible choice; Railway is a faster platform alternative; neither is universally superior without your workload, region and management preferences.
