Published RAM estimates disagree. One guide suggests roughly 8–10 GB, while another suggests 6–8 GB. Those are hosting-company estimates, not a controlled benchmark, and neither figure tells you how many players, loaded chunks or concurrent boss fights were assumed. Use the range only to create a test budget, then watch memory use and tick time with your intended player count.

Make the difficulty social, not surprising
Explain the survival rules before the first session and decide whether deaths require a recovery run, a shared equipment cache or a fresh start. A communal spawn shelter, spare food and basic tools reduce frustration without removing the pack’s intended danger. Keep regular backups because a single unlucky expedition can erase hours of progress.
Adjacent packs worth considering (but not RPG-first)
Some popular server packs add exploration, bosses or character-like progression without being designed primarily as RPGs. They can be excellent alternatives when your group wants a broader sandbox.

Choose DawnCraft if your group wants boss attempts to be the evening’s main event. Agree on how new players will handle the reported quest-reset behaviour, and test the pack with the exact number of concurrent players you expect.

For drop-in, drop-out groups
Vault Hunters’ separate Vault runs are a better structural fit than a single campaign when attendance changes frequently. Confirm the current release files first because the available descriptions do not establish a single authoritative version.
For survival specialists
RLCraft is the choice for players who actively want environmental hazards and punishing combat. Give the group a shared emergency plan and conservative backup schedule before enabling a long-running world.

- Record the exact pack release. Write down the pack name, release number, Minecraft version and loader shown on the project’s official file page.
- Install the matching server bundle. A Fabric pack requires a Fabric server; a NeoForge pack requires NeoForge. Do not substitute the loader because the Minecraft versions look similar.
- Match every client. Each player should use the same pack release, loader and configuration files. “Almost the same” is still a different mod set.
- Start with a clean test world. Confirm that the server reaches the world-selection or spawn stage before importing an established save.
- Only then migrate the real world. Take a complete backup, stop the server, copy the save and restart with the tested files.
The Prominence II conflict illustrates why this matters: a search snippet mentioning NeoForge 1.21.x is not enough to override the official 1.20.1 Fabric files. Always let the current project file listing determine your installation.

A practical sizing method
- Begin with the pack’s own published recommendation, if one exists.
- Add headroom for the largest number of simultaneous players, not the average.
- Run the server while players explore new terrain, fight mobs and use the pack’s signature systems.
- Watch memory allocation, garbage-collection pauses and tick time. A server can have free RAM and still lag because the CPU is saturated or too many chunks are active.
- Increase the allocation in measured steps, restart cleanly and repeat the same test. More RAM does not fix a loader mismatch, a broken mod or an overloaded CPU.
For a paid plan, ask the host which Java version, CPU model, storage type and per-instance limits apply. A headline RAM number without those details is not enough to predict performance.

- Confirm the Minecraft version and loader before opening ports or uploading a world.

The server stops during startup
Read the first meaningful error in the log, not just the final shutdown line. A missing dependency, wrong Java requirement or incompatible loader usually appears earlier. Restore the clean test instance, then add changes one at a time.
Players experience rubber-banding
Check tick time while the group is exploring and fighting. Reduce view or simulation distance, limit chunk-loading machines and spread players across fewer active regions. If memory is consistently full, increase RAM; if the CPU is pegged, more RAM alone will not help.
A newcomer cannot follow the group
