No VPN can guarantee that Max will stream from every country. Max says viewers traveling to a supported destination can stream there, with a catalog that may change based on physical location. It also advises turning off a VPN when it detects one. TechRadar reported accessing Max with NordVPN in its 2026 review, but NordVPN’s own support center documents cases where Max does not work with the service. Treat any VPN pick as a conditional option—not a promise of access.
Can you use a VPN to stream Max while traveling?
Max’s rules depend on where you are physically located. Its availability and travel guidance says subscribers can stream when traveling to a country or region where Max is available. The available shows and movies may differ from the catalog at home. If Max is not available at your destination, the service says streaming is unavailable. Previously downloaded titles may still play on supported mobile devices, subject to Max’s app and device instructions.

Max lists supported locations across the United States and selected countries in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia Pacific. The supported-country list and availability timeline can change, so check Max’s live availability page for your destination rather than relying on an old list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy Max may block a VPN connection
Max may identify and block IP addresses associated with VPNs or proxies. Its official troubleshooting guidance says: “To stream Max, you need to turn off your VPN, proxy, or anonymization service.” If Max reports a regional error, it says the IP address may be blocked or may be identifying your location incorrectly. Max’s suggested steps include disabling the VPN or proxy, restarting network devices, and contacting your internet provider or Max support if the issue continues.

That guidance matters: a VPN is not a Max-approved method for making the service available in an unsupported location. Even in a supported country, VPN detection can prevent playback.
VPNs to consider, with the evidence in context
The available comparisons do not establish a complete, same-method test of Max across providers, countries, devices, and dates. The evidence supports considering options for further comparison, not treating any provider as a dependable way to access Max everywhere.

| VPN | What the available evidence says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | TechRadar’s 2026 review reports accessing Max with NordVPN and ranks it highly overall. NordVPN Support also publishes a page titled “Max doesn’t work with NordVPN,” describing VPN errors and troubleshooting. | There is a reported successful result, but the provider also acknowledges failures. Neither establishes future access from every region or on every device. |
| ExpressVPN | TechRadar’s streaming review discusses ExpressVPN as a comparison option; the available result does not establish reliable Max access in every region or on every device. | Compare its current Max-specific results and device support before choosing it for this use. |
| Other VPNs | A provider’s general streaming claims do not establish that Max works through its service. The available comparisons do not provide a complete common-method test matrix or comparable current prices. | Look for a dated Max-specific result that identifies the country, server location, device, and app tested. |
These findings come from TechRadar’s editorial reviews, not an independent test of every provider and setup. VPN performance can change as streaming services identify and block IP addresses.

- Recent Max-specific results: Look for a test date and the country and server location used. A result from one location is not evidence of access everywhere.
- Exact device support: Max supports phones, tablets, computers, TVs, streaming players, set-top boxes, and game consoles, but that does not mean every VPN has an app for each device. Check the VPN’s current support for the specific device and operating system you use.
- Connection quality: Picture quality and stability depend on the connection, the VPN server, and the Max plan. A VPN does not raise the resolution or simultaneous-stream limit included in your Max plan.
- Privacy and account terms: Review the provider’s privacy policy and audits, ownership information, simultaneous-device allowance, subscription term, renewal price, and refund rules. Confirm current terms before paying.
Troubleshooting when Max will not play
Follow Max’s official guidance first
If Max detects a VPN or shows a regional error, its stated advice is to turn off the VPN, proxy, or anonymization service. If the location error persists after disabling it, Max recommends restarting network devices and contacting your internet provider or Max support.
If you are troubleshooting a VPN connection
NordVPN Support’s Max troubleshooting page says users may encounter errors and suggests switching to another server in the same country, then clearing the browser or streaming-app cache as applicable. These are the VPN provider’s troubleshooting steps; they do not guarantee that Max will accept the connection.

What a VPN can—and cannot—change
A VPN may change the IP address that a service sees, but it cannot guarantee that Max will accept that address or make Max available in a country where the service is not offered. Nor does it change your Max plan’s own stream, resolution, or download limits. Max’s plan details and prices vary by country; check the plan available to your account for those limits.
For ordinary travel to a supported Max country, Max says streaming is available there without presenting a VPN as a requirement. If access is important, check destination availability and your account’s plan before traveling, and do not rely on a VPN as a guarantee.
