Best VPNs for Gigabit Internet: What 2026 Speed Tests Show

2026 VPN speed tests show gigabit-plus results are possible, but their different routes and methods do not support a reliable five-provider ranking. Learn how to test for your own connection.

There is no defensible, apples-to-apples ranking of five VPNs for gigabit internet in the available 2026 tests. Results use different networks, routes, protocols and methods, so a high score from one review is not a reliable prediction of your speed. Windscribe and Proton VPN have useful published measurements, while NordVPN provides detail about its testing approach; the evidence does not support filling out a ranked top five.

For a gigabit connection, compare a VPN’s download, upload and latency on the routes and devices you actually use. A provider’s 10 Gbps server capacity is not a promise that an individual subscriber will get 1 Gbps.

What matters when choosing a VPN for gigabit internet?

Your ISP’s gigabit plan is only one part of the connection. The speed you see through a VPN also depends on your local network and device, the protocol in use, server distance and the route between you and that server. Windscribe makes the same qualification on its speed page: “Speeds depend on your own connection and distance to the server.” Windscribe’s 10 Gbps server page describes provider infrastructure and example tests; it does not guarantee an individual subscriber’s throughput.

Measure more than the best download number. Upload speed matters for sending large files, video calls and backups; latency affects responsiveness, especially in gaming and remote work. Record the protocol and server location alongside all three results. NordVPN says its own testing measures download, upload and ping across 11 locations and multiple protocols, but its description is not a directly comparable test against the other providers discussed here. Why 10 Gbps servers do not mean 1 Gbps for you

A 10 Gbps figure describes claimed server infrastructure capacity, not a per-customer speed guarantee. Shared server load, your access network, device performance and the route to the server all intervene between the server and your speed test. Treat infrastructure figures as context, not as a substitute for independent results on a relevant route.

Why WireGuard is worth testing

WireGuard is a practical protocol to include when speed is a priority. TechRadar recommends it for speed-focused use and reports protocol-specific results in its comparisons. That is a reason to test WireGuard where your VPN supports it—not proof that it will be fastest on every device, network or route. TechRadar’s 2026 fastest-VPN comparison

What the available 2026 measurements show

The figures below are useful examples, not a league table: each publication used its own testing conditions, and the results should not be compared as if they came from one shared benchmark.

Provider Published result or evidence How to interpret it
Windscribe TechRadar reported 2,263 Mbps on WireGuard and 770 Mbps on OpenVPN in its 2026 review. It says it used a 10 GB line, several benchmark services, at least two protocols, and morning and evening sessions. TechRadar’s Windscribe review Protocol-specific measurements from TechRadar’s test setup, not a prediction for your connection.
Windscribe Tom’s Guide reported 2,263 Mbps on a nearby connection and 1,209 Mbps on a UK-to-US route in its April 2026 review. Tom’s Guide’s Windscribe review The difference illustrates how route distance can affect results; it does not establish what every user will get.
Proton VPN Comparitech’s results, updated 7 October 2026 at 10:03 UTC, include a London WireGuard result of 863.2 Mbps download and 115.3 Mbps upload. Comparitech’s VPN speed tests by country and protocol A specific location and protocol measurement, not an overall provider ranking or universal speed estimate.
NordVPN Its cited page describes testing across 11 locations and several protocols, measuring download, upload and ping. It also makes a provider claim about 10 Gbps infrastructure. NordVPN’s speed-testing description The available page evidence does not provide a result on the same routes and conditions as the Windscribe measurements above.

TechRadar’s separate fastest-VPN comparison reports a 1,594 Mbps WireGuard result for a provider in its comparison. That number is meaningful only with the provider and test context in the full comparison; it is not enough to establish a fifth pick or rank services against measurements from different reviews. TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home | EasyMesh, VPN Clients & Server, HomeShield, OFDMA, MU-MIMO, USB 3.0, Secure by Design - Archer AX55
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

How to test a VPN on your gigabit connection

  1. Set a baseline. On the same device and network you plan to use, run a speed test with the VPN disconnected. Record download, upload and latency.
  2. Connect nearby. Choose a nearby VPN server and a fast supported protocol such as WireGuard, if available and suitable. Run the same test on the same device.
  3. Repeat at different times. Run multiple tests at different times of day; a single result can reflect temporary network or server conditions.
  4. Test a representative long-distance route. If you commonly connect to a distant country, test that route too. Keep its results separate from nearby-server results.
  5. Compare the whole picture. Look at download, upload and latency together, and note the server location and protocol for every run. Prefer the service and configuration that performs well for your actual use, rather than choosing by a vendor’s peak figure.

Can a VPN reach gigabit speeds?

Yes, a published test can exceed 1 Gbps: TechRadar and Tom’s Guide each reported 2,263 Mbps for Windscribe in their respective 2026 testing. Those results show that gigabit-plus measurements are possible under particular conditions; they do not establish that a VPN will reach gigabit speed on your line. Your result depends on the device, local connection, protocol, server and route.

Why this is not a ranked list of five

A credible top-five ranking requires comparable measurements—at minimum, a shared baseline connection, locations, protocols, test schedule, and download, upload and latency results. The cited sources do not provide that matrix. Windscribe has both provider claims and independent review measurements; Proton VPN has a specific Comparitech location result; NordVPN describes its methodology but does not supply a matching independent result for the same routes and conditions. The available evidence does not substantiate two additional selections or an overall order, so naming five “best” providers would imply certainty these tests do not support.
