What makes a VPN a fit for NVIDIA Shield?
Shield runs Android TV, so start with whether the provider offers an app for that environment and whether your device meets its operating-system requirements. Prefer installation through the device’s official app store when available. Then compare the controls you will use on a TV: startup auto-connect, network protection if the VPN disconnects, protocol choices, and whether selected apps can bypass the VPN.

Which one should you choose?
Choose ExpressVPN if explicit Shield documentation matters most
Its guide names Shield directly and gives an Android version threshold, installation route, auto-connect, and kill-switch details. That makes compatibility easier to verify from the cited documentation; it does not prove better speed or streaming results.

Consider Proton VPN if its Android TV controls suit your setup
Proton’s documented Android TV features include protocol selection, auto-connect, and split tunneling. Because the cited guide does not explicitly name Shield, confirm that the app is available for your particular device before subscribing on the assumption that it will install.
Install safely and configure the connection
ExpressVPN
- On Shield, open Google Play, find ExpressVPN, and install the app if it is available for your device.
- If direct Play Store installation is unavailable, follow the provider’s Android TV setup guide for its official APK route. Do not download an APK from a third-party source.
- Sign in, choose a server, and enable startup auto-connect if you want the VPN to connect when the app starts.
- Review the kill-switch setting. The cited guide says it blocks internet access if the VPN cannot connect or reconnect, and that it is disabled by default.
Proton VPN
- Open the Shield app store and check whether Proton VPN’s Android TV app is offered for your device.
- Install the app, then sign in using the QR-code or code flow documented in Proton’s guide.
- Select a server and choose a documented protocol if needed: WireGuard UDP/TCP or Stealth.
- Enable startup auto-connect if desired. If you change split-tunneling rules, reconnect for the change to take effect.
Streaming, privacy, and performance limits
Proton says streaming support is available on paid plans and advises against using Secure Core for streaming because it is not optimized for video quality. Its streaming guide also states: “Proton VPN should not be used to evade copyright regulations.” Keep the account and content access within the platform’s terms and applicable law.

Country counts are provider-published service-scale figures, not performance tests. Proton’s Android TV page stated “140+ countries,” and ExpressVPN’s Shield page stated “113 countries”; both pages were accessed October 7, 2026. These figures do not show which service is faster on Shield or whether a specific catalog will work.
