SASE is a cloud architecture that brings network and security capabilities together for enterprise access. It is a direction organizations can evaluate as cloud services, distributed IT and remote work reshape networks—not a guarantee of security or a forecast that every organization will adopt it.
What is SASE?
Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) combines networking and security capabilities delivered as services in a cloud architecture. Joint guidance from CISA and partner agencies identifies these capabilities as part of the SASE landscape:

- Software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN)
- Secure web gateway (SWG)
- Cloud access security broker (CASB)
- Next-generation firewall (NGFW)
- Zero-trust network access (ZTNA)
The components are intended to work across access to enterprise resources, rather than treating network connectivity and security as entirely separate concerns. The guidance describes a model and capabilities; it does not prescribe one product or implementation. CISA and partner agencies’ June 2024 guide outlines the approach.
Why are organizations considering SASE?
Enterprise networks have changed: employees and systems access multiple cloud services, IT is geographically distributed, and applications increasingly use microservices. NIST describes these shifts in its 2022 Guide to a Secure Enterprise Network Landscape. They complicate the older pattern of routing users through a central network perimeter.

Remote-access and VPN deployments can also introduce vulnerabilities, including risks from misconfiguration. In a June 2024 alert, CISA and partner agencies urged organizations to consider Zero Trust, SSE and SASE approaches that can provide greater visibility into network activity. That is guidance to evaluate modern approaches, not evidence that SASE by itself prevents breaches.
How do SASE, SSE and zero trust relate?
SASE and SSE
Security Service Edge (SSE) refers to converged security functions. SASE is broader: it combines network capabilities with security capabilities delivered as services. In practical terms, an organization considering SSE is focused on the security-service side; a SASE evaluation also considers networking, including SD-WAN.
SASE and zero trust
Zero trust is a broader security approach, not a synonym for SASE. SASE can be one way to deliver network access and security capabilities within a zero-trust architecture. NIST’s SP 1800-35 implementation resource, published June 10, 2025, documents 19 example zero-trust implementations, including SASE approaches. The examples illustrate possible implementations; they do not establish a required architecture for every enterprise.

- HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
- UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.
- OPTIMIZED FOR MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES: Tailored for businesses needing robust security without the infrastructure of larger enterprises.
- RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
- EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.
One NIST implementation example combines Lookout SSE with Okta Identity Cloud. It illustrates integration between services in a particular build, not a required vendor combination or a claim about current product terms.
How should SASE be evaluated against a VPN?
A VPN is a connectivity method; SASE is a broader architecture that can include security services and network capabilities. So the choice is not necessarily a direct, like-for-like replacement decision. An organization should first identify which access and security problems it is trying to address, then assess whether a SASE or SSE approach fits its environment better than its current arrangement.
CISA’s advice is to evaluate modern approaches in light of visibility and remote-access risks. It does not say every VPN is insecure or that adopting SASE automatically resolves misconfiguration, access-control or other security problems. Policy design, identity controls, deployment and ongoing operations still matter.

- 【Up to 1100 Mbps VPN Speed 】 Hardware-accelerated WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO deliver up to 1100 Mbps VPN throughput, over 3× faster than Brume 2 for smooth remote access and file transfers.
- 【Three 2.5G Ports & Multi-WAN】Tri-port 2.5GbE design with flexible WAN LAN configuration supports multi-gigabit wired setups, dual-ISP Multi-WAN and failover to keep home and SOHO networks online.
- 【Stealth VPN Obfuscation】VPN obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helping you evade blocking, bypass restrictive networks and maintain stable, private connections.
- 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
- 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles
What should buyers look for in a SASE solution?
There is no vendor ranking or comparative performance finding in the cited government materials. Use a requirements-based comparison, and verify each provider’s current scope and capabilities directly:

- Network coverage: Check whether SD-WAN and branch connectivity are in scope, especially if the organization needs to connect offices as well as remote users.
- Identity integration: Determine how the service uses enterprise identity controls and handles access to private applications.
- Visibility: Ask what administrators can see about users, devices, applications and network activity, and how that information supports investigation and policy enforcement.
- Environment fit: Map support for the organization’s cloud services, on-premises systems, branches and remote users rather than assuming one deployment model covers all needs.
- Operations and migration: Account for deployment complexity, integration with existing controls and the work required to migrate policies and users.
Is SASE really the future of network security?
The evidence supports treating SASE as a relevant approach to changing enterprise network needs, not as a settled forecast of universal adoption. CISA and its partners recommend that organizations consider SASE alongside SSE and Zero Trust; NIST documents SASE among several implementation approaches. Neither source predicts that SASE will be right for every organization or establish that it delivers better outcomes in all environments.
