Best vMix Alternatives for a 24/7 Pre-Recorded YouTube Channel

OBS can loop prerecorded videos locally; a cloud service avoids keeping a home computer running. Compare the practical vMix alternatives for a continuous YouTube channel.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a simple 24/7 loop, OBS Studio is the strongest local vMix alternative: it can loop a media file or playlist, provided the computer and internet connection stay available. If you want the stream to keep running without a computer at home, a cloud service is the more relevant alternative. StreamNeo is the first option to consider for that workflow: it runs a YouTube loop from the cloud, supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives new accounts a free first day.

What makes a good vMix alternative for a 24/7 YouTube stream?

A looping playlist and a scheduled broadcast grid are different needs. A loop repeats content; a schedule starts particular programs at particular times. Also distinguish where the stream runs: local software depends on your computer and connection, while a cloud service hosts playback and streaming away from your home setup.

What to compare Why it matters What is established
Continuous playback Content must continue when one file ends. OBS supports looping a media file or playlist. vMix PlayList and List can play videos back to back and loop. (vMix support; OBS documentation)
Time-of-day scheduling A program grid needs more than a repeating playlist. vMix says it does not support time-of-day scheduling. Check each alternative’s documentation rather than assuming it has a broadcast scheduler. (vMix support)
Local or cloud operation This determines what must stay powered and connected. OBS and vMix are local software workflows; YouTube’s encoder help page also lists a cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded-stream option. (YouTube Help)
Production controls Switching, graphics, guests, and other inputs matter for a hybrid channel, but may be unnecessary for a simple loop. vMix describes broader production and streaming functions. That capability alone does not establish automated channel scheduling. (vMix product overview; vMix streaming support)
Recovery, monitoring, and uptime A loop can stop if a local computer, network, or service connection fails. The cited materials do not establish comparative service uptime or service-specific guarantees. Verify provider terms directly.

1. StreamNeo: cloud-hosted looping without a home computer

For a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube channel where the priority is to avoid leaving a local encoder running, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It streams to YouTube, not to other platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 24/7 looping and playlists, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode and no quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, once per account. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Five or more slots can be discussed with support.

2. OBS Studio: the local, flexible alternative

OBS is a practical choice if you are comfortable keeping a computer and internet connection running. Its documentation supports local media playback: a Media Source can loop one file, while a VLC Video source can manage a playlist and has Loop Playlist enabled by default. That documents looping capability, not guaranteed unattended reliability or time-of-day scheduling. (OBS Media Sources documentation)

Set up a basic repeating playlist in OBS

  1. Prepare the files. Put the prerecorded videos you want to rotate on the computer that will run OBS. Confirm they play correctly and that the computer has enough available storage.
  2. Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene, then add a VLC Video source. Add the local files in the playlist in the order you want them played. Enable Loop Playlist if it is not already enabled.
  3. Connect YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and obtain its stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect an account or use the stream key, depending on the available connection method.
  4. Set video and output deliberately. In Settings → Video, choose the output resolution and frame rate appropriate for the source and your upload connection. In Settings → Output, select an encoder and bitrate that your hardware and sustained upload can handle. No single bitrate or resolution is established by the cited documentation for every channel; follow the current YouTube encoder guidance for your selected output and test the full setup before relying on it.
  5. Start the stream and verify playback. Start streaming in OBS, then check the YouTube live control room for a healthy incoming signal and confirm that the video and audio are correct.
  6. Plan for unattended operation. Prevent sleep and automatic shutdown, keep OBS running, and monitor both the computer and connection. A looping playlist does not itself restart a failed computer, restore an interrupted network, or prove continuous uptime.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload your recording or playlist to StreamNeo, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream at their original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day.

3. OneStream Live: a cloud-service candidate to verify

OneStream Live’s official material describes scheduling and multistreaming prerecorded and real-time video. That makes it a candidate to investigate, but those statements do not by themselves establish a current 24/7 YouTube loop feature, current prices, uptime, recovery behavior, plan limits, or present affiliate terms. Check its current product documentation and terms before choosing it for unattended continuous streaming. (OneStream Live affiliate guide)

When vMix may still be the better fit

vMix may suit an operator who wants production controls and only needs a basic repeat loop. Its support page says: “vMix is primarily designed for live streaming single events and as such does not support time of day scheduling.” The same page describes PlayList and List for back-to-back playback and looping. (vMix support, updated January 17, 2025)

Its Windows PC/laptop production environment includes video inputs, titles, guests, recording, and streaming, including to YouTube and RTMP-compatible destinations. Those features can be useful for a channel with active production or live elements, but they are not proof of a built-in scheduled 24/7 program grid. (vMix product overview; vMix streaming support)

How to choose

  • Choose OBS if you want a no-cost local software workflow and can keep the computer and connection running and maintain them.
  • Choose a cloud service if avoiding a continuously running home computer is the main priority. Compare current looping, scheduling, upload/storage limits, recovery, destinations, pricing, and support directly with each provider.
  • Keep vMix in consideration if you need its production controls and a basic loop is sufficient; do not select it expecting time-of-day scheduling.

A dedicated computer is the physical equipment relevant to a local OBS or vMix workflow, but the sources cited here do not establish a minimum specification or endorse a particular model. Actual requirements depend on the video and encoding workload. Local operation also uses electricity and an internet connection; cloud operation substitutes a provider plan for that home-side runtime. The evidence here does not support a current price ranking or total-cost comparison.

Troubleshooting a 24/7 loop

The playlist stops at the end

Check that looping is enabled. In OBS, the documented options are Media Source looping for one file and Loop Playlist for a VLC Video source playlist. A playlist that is not set to loop will not repeat indefinitely. (OBS documentation)

YouTube does not receive a signal

Check that OBS is connected to the intended YouTube live stream and that its stream key is current and entered correctly. Confirm that OBS is actively streaming and inspect the YouTube live control room for the incoming signal. Avoid sharing the stream key; anyone with access may be able to send a stream to that destination.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

The stream disconnects or becomes unstable

For a local setup, check whether the computer slept, OBS stopped, or the internet connection dropped. Review encoder load and sustained upload capacity, then lower output demands if the machine or connection cannot maintain them. A loop setting addresses media playback, not outages or automatic recovery.

A file plays locally but not in the stream

Check the OBS source selection, playlist entries, and audio/video playback in the active scene. Confirm the file is accessible to the account running OBS and that the source is visible and audible in the scene being streamed.

A scheduled program does not switch at the intended time

Do not confuse looping tools with time-of-day scheduling. vMix explicitly says it does not offer that scheduling feature. Verify an alternative’s current scheduling documentation before building a program grid around it. (vMix support)

YouTube rights and monetization checks

Before putting a loop on air, confirm you have the rights to every video, soundtrack, image, and other element in it. A live format does not grant permission to rebroadcast someone else’s work. Copyright claims or platform enforcement can interrupt a stream or affect the channel.

Permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. Reused or repetitive content can raise monetization concerns even when a creator has permission; review YouTube’s current policies and make sure the channel adds meaningful original value rather than relying on permission alone. Check YouTube Help for the rules that apply to your channel and content before scheduling long-running streams.
