If a ScreenshotMachine command rejects a local HTML path, the key issue is likely the input type: ScreenshotMachine’s documented API takes a web-page URL in its url parameter, not a filesystem path. Its documentation does not establish support for local HTML files or file:// URLs. The title refers to a “CLI,” but the available official material documents an API and client examples, not a canonical ScreenshotMachine CLI; the exact behavior therefore depends on which executable or wrapper you are using.
Why a local HTML path may fail
ScreenshotMachine’s API documentation describes url as “The web page URL you want to capture.” The target is a page for the hosted service to retrieve, rather than a path on your computer. See the ScreenshotMachine API documentation.
That distinction also explains a common misunderstanding: the HTML page is the input, while output.png in a command can be the local destination for the returned screenshot. ScreenshotMachine’s Bash example calls the hosted API with a URL and redirects the response to an image file. Its PHP example similarly supplies a page URL and writes the screenshot locally. Saving an image to disk does not mean the service can read an HTML file from disk.
The documentation reviewed does not say that a local path or file:// URL is supported. That is not proof that every third-party command wrapper rejects every local-file scheme; it means the documented API workflow does not establish local-file input support.

First identify which “CLI” you are using
The available ScreenshotMachine documentation identifies an API and example code, but does not establish a canonical CLI, its flags, or its error messages. Before changing your command, determine what program actually runs:
- Check the executable or package name and its installed version.
- Run that program’s help or version command to confirm its supported arguments and input formats.
- Inspect the command’s target argument. If it passes a filesystem path as
url, that differs from the documented URL-based API input. - For a precise diagnosis, keep the complete error output and note your operating system. Remove API keys and other secrets before sharing the command.
Without the package name, version, and exact invocation, it is not possible to attribute a particular rejection or flag to an official ScreenshotMachine CLI.

Choose a workflow for the file you need to capture
Use ScreenshotMachine for a reachable web page
Pass a URL that the hosted service can retrieve. ScreenshotMachine’s documentation says the url parameter should be percent-encoded and notes that an http(s):// prefix is optional in its parameter description. A local development server is not automatically reachable from a remote capture service; access depends on your network and server setup.
Serve the HTML, then provide its URL
If you need to keep ScreenshotMachine in the workflow, make the page available at a URL the service can reach, then provide that URL as the capture target. Check that the page’s relative CSS, scripts, fonts, and images resolve from that served location. Whether the service can access your server depends on your network, access controls, and setup; a server bound only to your own machine may not be reachable remotely.

Use a renderer that documents local-file input
If the HTML must remain on disk and should not be exposed through a reachable URL, use a separate renderer whose documentation explicitly supports a local HTML path. The shot-scraper documentation, for example, covers screenshots of local HTML files. That is a separate tool, not a ScreenshotMachine feature.
Check assets and access when serving a local page
Converting a file into a served page can change what the browser sees. Relative asset references are resolved against the served URL, and pages behind authentication or network restrictions may not be available to a hosted capture service. Confirm that the capture service can retrieve both the document and any required assets before troubleshooting image output. Do not expose private content publicly just to make a screenshot request work.

Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A local path is rejected or produces an unexpected result | The command passes a filesystem path where the documented API expects a page URL. | Confirm the CLI or wrapper’s supported inputs. For ScreenshotMachine’s documented API, provide a URL the hosted service can retrieve. |
| The screenshot is written locally, but the HTML is not loaded | The output filename is being mistaken for the capture input. | Separate the target URL from the local destination for the returned image. |
| A served page loads without styles or images | Relative assets may not resolve from the served URL, or the service may not be able to retrieve them. | Check asset URLs and whether the capture service can access those resources. |
| The error does not match the API documentation | A third-party wrapper or a different executable may be responsible. | Record its package name, version, exact command with secrets removed, operating system, and full error output; consult that tool’s own help or documentation. |

ScreenshotNeo is an alternative website screenshot API. For an HTML file that must stay local, use a local-file renderer; ScreenshotNeo’s one-request API is for URLs, like ScreenshotMachine’s documented workflow. When capturing an accessible web page, it can remove cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000.
Example request (replace the target URL with a page the service can reach):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup details. Sign up for free to get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can ScreenshotMachine take a screenshot of a local HTML file?
Its documented API takes a web-page URL; the documentation does not establish local paths or file:// URLs as supported inputs.
Why does the ScreenshotMachine CLI reject a file path?
The command may be passing a filesystem path to an API documented to accept a URL. Check the identity and documentation of the specific CLI or wrapper, since an official canonical CLI was not established.
