Best VLC Settings for Streaming 1080p Video to YouTube Live

For 1080p H.264 YouTube Live, start at 10 Mbps for 30 fps or 17 Mbps for 60 fps, use CBR and 2-second keyframes, and verify your VLC build with a test stream.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 1080p H.264 YouTube Live stream, start with 10 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps, use constant bitrate (CBR), set a 2-second keyframe interval, and choose RTMPS if your VLC build supports it. Use 30 or 60 fps to match your source and the encoding capacity and upload speed available; these are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular computer or connection can sustain them.

Recommended VLC settings for 1080p YouTube Live

Use the settings below as targets when configuring VLC’s stream output. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations distinguish between 30 fps and 60 fps, so choose the row that matches the frame rate you intend to send.

Setting 1080p30 1080p60
Video bitrate 10 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum
Frame rate 30 fps 60 fps
Bitrate mode CBR CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
Video codec H.264 H.264

The minimum bitrates are platform guidance, not an ideal target for every video. If your upload connection or computer cannot hold the recommended rate steadily, lower the bitrate and test stream health rather than letting an unstable stream fluctuate or drop frames.

Audio and picture format

Use AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube’s stereo audio guidance is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. Its advanced video guidance specifies progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and Rec. 709 with 8-bit depth for SDR. VLC builds and output workflows expose different controls, so set only options your installed build actually offers; do not assume every advanced parameter is available in every VLC menu.

Choose 30 fps or 60 fps

Use 30 fps when the source and motion allow it

For a 1080p30 stream, the H.264 recommended video bitrate is 10 Mbps. It is the suitable target when the source is 30 fps or when the computer and upload connection cannot reliably sustain 60 fps at the higher bitrate.

Use 60 fps for a 60 fps source that you can encode steadily

For 1080p60, the H.264 recommended bitrate is 17 Mbps. The higher frame rate can preserve smoother motion, but it also requires more encoding capacity and upload bandwidth. Choose it only when the source is 60 fps and your system and connection can sustain the stream.

Set up VLC with YouTube’s current stream details

VLC’s exact menu names, codecs, and RTMPS output behavior vary by installed version, platform, and build. YouTube’s ingestion information also depends on the stream you create. Use the current values shown for that stream in YouTube rather than reusing an old destination or assuming a menu path applies to every VLC installation.

  • 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.
  1. Create or open the YouTube live stream details. In YouTube’s live setup, locate the current primary ingestion URL and stream name (the stream key). Copy the values for the stream you are about to use.
  2. Choose RTMPS when VLC supports it. RTMPS encrypts video, audio, and control data in transit. RTMP also supports H.264, but it is not encrypted. If the VLC output in your installed build cannot use RTMPS, confirm the available protocol and YouTube’s accepted ingestion details before proceeding.
  3. Configure VLC’s stream output. Select the source video and configure its network stream/transcoding output using the H.264, bitrate, frame-rate, CBR, keyframe, and audio targets above where those controls are available. VLC’s official 3.0 documentation describes FFmpeg AMF hardware encoders for network streaming/transcoding; it is a specific workflow, not a universal recipe for all VLC builds or platforms.
  4. Enter the destination in the format VLC expects. Some encoders provide separate fields for the ingestion URL and stream name; others expect them combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow the input format required by the VLC output field and the current YouTube stream details.
  5. Keep the stream key private. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it with anyone who should not control the stream.
  6. Start a private or unlisted test. Check YouTube’s preview for image, motion, and audio, then review the Live Control Room’s stream-health messages before relying on the setup for an event.

VLC’s cited official 3.0 documentation also cautions that VLC 4.0 nightly builds may be unstable and that AMF was not backported to VLC 3.x in the described workflow. Do not treat an experimental build or that particular encoder workflow as a universal requirement for YouTube streaming.

RTMP or RTMPS?

For a normal YouTube encoder ingest, RTMP and RTMPS support H.264 and suit normal, low, or ultra-low latency use. Prefer RTMPS when your installed VLC output supports it because it encrypts the video, audio, and control data in transit. HLS and DASH are also encrypted and offer other codec options, but their segment-based delivery generally brings greater latency; they are not a drop-in substitute for every VLC-to-YouTube workflow.

Check stream health and fix common problems

VLC does not connect to YouTube

  • Confirm that you copied the current ingestion URL and stream name for the intended YouTube stream.
  • Check whether VLC expects the URL and stream name in separate fields or together as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME.
  • Verify that the selected protocol is supported by the installed VLC build and that the destination format is accepted.

Video arrives, but YouTube reports poor health

  • Compare the actual output frame rate and bitrate with the 1080p30 or 1080p60 target you selected.
  • If the computer cannot encode or the connection cannot upload steadily at the recommended target, reduce the bitrate or choose 30 fps where appropriate, then test again.
  • Watch for YouTube health diagnostics such as low video bitrate or frame-rate mismatch.

Picture is present but audio is missing

  • Check that VLC is sending an audio track and that its selected audio output uses AAC or MP3.
  • Confirm that audio is present in YouTube’s test preview and review stream-health messages for absent audio.

The stream looks different from the source

  • Check the selected resolution, frame rate, scan mode, and aspect ratio. YouTube’s advanced guidance calls for progressive scan and square pixels.
  • Test representative motion, not just a static opening frame, and watch the preview for judder, dropped frames, or scaling issues.

Before going live: a short verification checklist

  • Use H.264 at the frame rate that matches the source and that your setup can sustain.
  • Set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the selected frame rate as the starting target.
  • Use the current YouTube ingestion details and keep the stream key confidential.
  • Run an upload speed test, then send a private or unlisted test using representative motion and audio.
  • Review the YouTube preview and Live Control Room stream-health messages before the event.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream rather than specifically using VLC, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist running from the cloud. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; the stream runs at the quality you uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use VLC to stream a video file to YouTube Live?

Yes, if your VLC build and output configuration support the required encoding and YouTube ingest destination. The available controls and protocol behavior vary by build and platform, so verify with a test stream.

Does YouTube require RTMPS for a 1080p stream?

RTMPS is the preferable encrypted ingest option when the installed encoder supports it; RTMP also supports H.264. Confirm the current ingestion details and protocol support for your setup.
