For a Windows PC with a supported RTX graphics card, NVIDIA Broadcast is a strong no-green-screen option; for streamers who already have a physical green screen, OBS Studio’s built-in Chroma Key filter is the straightforward free choice. XSplit Broadcaster is worth considering if you want automatic background removal integrated into a Windows production app. There is no established universal winner for cutout quality or performance: test the options with your camera, lighting, movement, and computer.
Choose by your setup and workflow
- Have a supported NVIDIA RTX PC and want background removal without a screen? Try NVIDIA Broadcast. It processes your camera and provides a virtual camera feed for production apps such as OBS and XSplit. Confirm its current hardware and Windows requirements before installing.
- Have a physical green screen? Use OBS Studio’s built-in Chroma Key filter. It is available across Windows, macOS, and Linux and provides controls for similarity, smoothness, and spill reduction.
- Want background removal within OBS without a physical screen? The OBS Background Removal plugin is a third-party add-on, not a built-in OBS feature. Check its current release and compatibility with your OBS version before installing.
- Want an integrated Windows app with automatic removal and keying modes? Evaluate XSplit Broadcaster. Its support page offers Automatic, Chroma Key, and Color Key modes; higher automatic-removal quality settings use more hardware resources.
The choice is between physical chroma keying, which removes a selected color, and software background segmentation, which does not require a screen but depends on supported hardware and software. No comparable controlled test establishes which option produces the cleanest edges or uses the least computing power.

Use OBS Chroma Key with a physical screen
- Add your camera: In OBS, add a Video Capture Device source to the scene and select your camera.
- Add the filter: Right-click the camera source, choose Filters, then add Chroma Key under Effect Filters.
- Choose the key color: Select the color matching your backdrop, typically green for a green screen. OBS’s filter removes the selected color.
- Adjust the controls: Tune similarity to remove the backdrop, smoothness to soften the keyed boundary, and spill reduction to reduce reflected screen color on your subject. Make small adjustments while watching the preview.
- Check the whole scene: Test at your normal camera distance and lighting, with the movement and clothing you expect during a stream. Look for leftover patches, holes in the subject, or colored fringes before going live.
If you choose chroma key, a green screen backdrop gives the filter a consistent color to remove. It is not required for the software-removal options.

Use NVIDIA Broadcast as a virtual camera
Check system requirements first
NVIDIA’s current requirements page lists GeForce RTX 2060 or higher, Quadro RTX 3000, TITAN RTX, or higher; 8 GB RAM; Windows 10 64-bit; and driver 570 or higher. It recommends an Intel Core i5 8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or higher, and installation requires internet connectivity. Requirements may change, so verify them on NVIDIA’s Broadcast page before installing.

Set up the camera feed
- Install NVIDIA Broadcast after confirming your PC meets its requirements.
- In Broadcast, select your camera and choose background removal, replacement, or blur.
- In OBS, XSplit, or another compatible app, select the NVIDIA Broadcast virtual camera as the camera source.
- Preview your scene with your usual lighting and movement. Check the app’s resource use and the output before streaming.
NVIDIA describes the app’s virtual-camera workflow and features on its official product page. Do not assume an RTX card alone guarantees a particular cutout result; the sources do not provide comparable quality benchmarks.
Use background removal in OBS without a screen
OBS’s built-in Chroma Key is for color removal, not automatic portrait segmentation. For the latter, the OBS forum lists a community Background Removal plugin. Its listing names Windows, macOS, and Linux, requires OBS 28.0.0 or later, and shows a last update of August 9, 2026. Those listing details do not guarantee compatibility with every current OBS release.

- Confirm that the plugin version supports your installed OBS version and operating system before installing.
- Install only from the official resource’s linked download, then follow the plugin’s current setup instructions.
- Test it in a private scene or recording with your actual lighting, camera, and movement before using it on a live stream.

Test before choosing
Background removal depends on more than the product name. Camera quality, lighting, subject movement, and computer load all affect the practical result. Use the same room, camera framing, and movement when comparing candidates. Inspect hair and shoulders, edges around hands, and any background that shows through when you move. Then run your intended production scene at its normal resolution and frame rate to see whether your PC remains responsive.

OBS warns that meeting its platform-specific minimum requirements does not guarantee adequate streaming or recording performance; encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity also matter. Check the OBS system requirements for your platform and workflow.
