For most 24/7 nature ambience streams, start at 1080p30 if your source footage is 1080p and a stable stream matters more than maximum detail. Use 1440p30 or 4K30 only when the footage contains that detail and your encoder and upload connection can sustain the required bitrate continuously. YouTube does not prescribe a nature-stream-specific resolution; this is a practical recommendation based on its general live-stream guidance.
How to choose the right resolution
Think of resolution as a trade-off between visible source detail and the bitrate your encoder must deliver without interruption. For a stream that runs around the clock, choose a setting your equipment and connection can hold reliably—not the highest setting they can reach briefly. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks.

- Use 1080p30 when your footage is 1080p, or when stable operation is the priority and higher-resolution source detail is not available.
- Consider 1440p30 when the source has genuine 1440p detail and you can sustain its higher bitrate target.
- Choose 2160p30 (4K) when the footage is genuinely 4K and the encoder and upload connection can continuously support the larger target.
These are conditional recommendations, not a tested universal optimum. Upscaling lower-detail footage to 4K does not create the missing detail; select a stream resolution that represents the source rather than choosing 4K merely for its label.
YouTube’s recommended 30 fps bitrate targets
YouTube Help’s recommended live-ingest targets, accessed in 2026, differ by codec and resolution. These are encoder settings, not independent image-quality measurements or guarantees of the quality each viewer receives.

| Incoming resolution at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 2160p30 (4K) | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
Use the target for your selected codec, resolution and frame rate. The table is specifically for 30 fps; YouTube publishes separate targets for other frame rates. If your connection cannot sustain the applicable target, step down rather than accepting recurring drops in stream health. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Set up the stream for stability
Choose automatic or manual settings
YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you need to set these manually, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual resolution settings. The Live API also supports a variable setting for automatic detection. The available resolution and frame-rate combinations are documented in Google’s LiveStreams reference.
Use compatible encoder settings
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate encoding, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. For 4K, low latency is unavailable and the stream uses normal latency. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance against your encoder’s available controls.

Test representative footage before going live
Nature footage can include movement such as flowing water, leaves, rain or wildlife. Test a representative section, including its audio, rather than judging the setup only from a static scene. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
After launch, monitor stream health. YouTube’s diagnostics can identify low bitrate, keyframe-interval problems, configuration mismatches and video-ingestion starvation; starvation can cause buffering. See YouTube’s live-stream health messages, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC.
Troubleshoot common resolution and stability problems
- The stream buffers or loses health: check the stream-health diagnostics and whether the encoder can continuously deliver the selected bitrate. If it cannot, lower the resolution or bitrate target to a setting your connection can sustain.
- YouTube reports a keyframe or configuration issue: compare the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate mode and keyframe interval with the settings YouTube expects. The recommended keyframe frequency is 2 seconds and should not exceed 4 seconds.
- The picture looks no more detailed at 4K: check the actual source footage. A higher output resolution cannot restore detail absent from lower-resolution source material.
- You need a different result from automatic detection: use a custom stream key and manual resolution settings as YouTube describes, then test and monitor the resulting stream.
