Audacity’s Noise Reduction process works from a noise profile: select a stretch that contains background noise but no wanted sound, capture that profile, and then apply reduction to the audio you want to clean. It is a poor match for isolated sounds such as a door slam, which are not steady background noise.

Choose CapCut for a simple in-editor control
CapCut’s guide describes a Reduce noise control for audio in the editor. If you use it, check the dialogue carefully while editing; the guide recommends headphones for hearing fine detail. That vendor guidance is not an independent test showing that CapCut outperforms other options.

A careful cleanup workflow
- Keep the original recording. Duplicate the audio or preserve an untouched source file so you can compare and recover the unprocessed version.
- Identify the problem. Decide whether you are hearing steady hiss or hum, dialogue noise, reverb, or a one-off event. A steady-noise profile is not a general-purpose fix for every sound.
- Use the narrowest relevant control. Choose a repair or cleanup effect aimed at the actual issue rather than stacking several strong effects without checking the result.
- For Audacity, profile noise carefully. Select a section containing only the steady background noise. If wanted voice or music is included in the profile, the process may remove parts of it as well.
- Apply reduction gradually and audition it. Listen for changes to the wanted voice or sound, including metallic or watery artifacts. More reduction can make the result less natural.
- Monitor the details. Headphones can help you notice dialogue detail while editing; they are a monitoring aid, not noise-reduction software or a remedy for poor recording conditions.
What noise reduction cannot promise
Noise cleanup involves a trade-off: reducing unwanted sound too aggressively can damage the wanted voice or make it sound metallic or watery. A quieter recording is not automatically a better one. Keep the source, adjust with restraint, and judge the result by listening. The cited documentation does not provide comparable published performance statistics or establish a universal best application.
