Frame the cook and the work surface clearly, check audio and music rights, then monitor the stream while you cook.
Check YouTube livestream eligibility
YouTube’s current Help guidance says livestreamers must be at least 16, have a verified channel, and have had no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and overview. Requirements and interface details can change, so confirm them in YouTube Help before your show.

Mobile streaming has extra requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no recent live restrictions, and live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s mobile instructions list Android 8.0 or later and iOS 8 or later. Check the current steps at Create a live stream on mobile.
Choose a camera and streaming method
| Method | Best suited to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Phone | A simple setup or a show that needs to move around the kitchen. | Meet mobile eligibility, stabilize the phone, and verify the framing and sound before going live. A compatible phone mount can help hold an overhead view, but it is optional. |
| Webcam | A straightforward computer-based show where one camera angle is enough. | Check that the camera captures both the host and the cooking surface, and test the audio in the actual room. |
| Encoder | A show using external audio or video equipment, overlays, or multiple cameras. | It offers more production control, but requires more setup and monitoring. YouTube describes encoder workflows at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. |
You can start with equipment you already have; YouTube says expensive gear is not necessary. For an encoder setup, external audio gear such as a USB microphone is an option, not a requirement or an official model recommendation. YouTube’s livestreaming tips explain the available approaches and preparation.

Plan the cooking-show shot
Choose whether the episode will be horizontal, vertical, or offered in both formats. YouTube’s Live Control Room may default to simultaneous horizontal and vertical streams; the vertical version is center-cropped unless you edit it. Inspect the vertical preview carefully: a crop that works for a face may cut off hands, ingredients, or the pan. YouTube says a vertical version cannot be added after the stream has started.
- Position the main view so viewers can see the host, work surface, and the cooking action without reaching across the frame.
- Arrange ingredients and tools within reach before the broadcast, while keeping labels and the food visible when they matter to the demonstration.
- If using a separate close-up camera, rehearse switching between it and the host view so viewers do not miss an important step.
- Check the shot in the intended orientation and on a phone-sized screen as well as your computer display.
Set up and rehearse before the episode
- Verify the channel and enable live streaming. Confirm the channel is verified and has no live restrictions in the prior 90 days. If using a phone, check the additional mobile eligibility and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create a test stream. Use a public or unlisted test before the episode. Confirm the correct camera, microphone, orientation, and stream page rather than relying on the equipment preview alone.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. For an encoder production, prepare well ahead of time, inspect the preview, and check that the event is accessible from the channel/watch page and on mobile. YouTube’s setup tips recommend testing and monitoring quality; their timing suggestions for encoder streams are not a universal schedule for every cooking show.
- Listen and watch continuously during the rehearsal. Check speech clarity, background noise, image focus, exposure, and whether steam or movement obscures the food. Confirm that the audio remains intelligible when the cook turns away from the camera.
- Do a full camera rehearsal with the ingredients and tools in place. Demonstrate the most important actions, such as chopping or pouring, and make sure the chosen angle shows them clearly.
Check music rights and YouTube policies
A song playing in the kitchen is still part of the broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to hold the necessary rights, explicitly including music licensing rights. Do not assume that music is cleared because it is playing in the background or because you can hear it in the room. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions, and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and terms during the show.

After ending a mobile livestream, YouTube provides a recap and archive; the archive’s visibility can be changed or the archive deleted. Review the finished recording before sharing it as a complete episode, especially if the live framing or audio differed from the test.
