To show YouTube chat inside the video your viewers watch, add a YouTube-capable chat overlay to your OBS scene as a Browser source. OBS does not provide its own chat overlay. If you mean displaying chat on a website instead, use YouTube’s live-chat iframe; that is a different setup.

Put YouTube live chat in an OBS stream
OBS treats the overlay as a web page displayed in your scene. You choose a widget that supports YouTube, then add its URL as a Browser source. The overlay is supplied by a third party; OBS does not directly provide facilities to show stream chat in the stream. OBS Project’s FAQ explains this distinction.

- Start or schedule the YouTube live stream. Make the live video and its chat available in YouTube before configuring the overlay. Keep the stream’s watch page accessible so you can confirm you are using the chat for the correct broadcast.
- Choose an overlay provider that supports YouTube chat. Create or select a chat overlay in that provider’s dashboard. StreamElements is one documented example: it lists chat as an overlay type and supports rendering overlays in broadcast software through a browser source. See its overlay documentation.
- Copy the overlay URL. In StreamElements, its documentation describes copying the overlay URL from the dashboard or editor. Use the URL for the specific overlay you created, not the provider’s general website address. See StreamElements’ overlay instructions.
- Add it to the right OBS scene. In OBS Studio, select the scene where chat should appear. In Sources, add a Browser source and paste the overlay URL. OBS describes Browser Source as a way to add a web page to a scene, with chat boxes among its common uses. Follow the provider’s guidance for the source’s width and height, then position it where it will not obscure important content. Keep the Browser source above the video or other scene elements it should cover. Refer to OBS Browser Source documentation.
- Preview before going live. Check the scene at the output size you plan to stream. Confirm the chat appears, is readable against the background, and does not cover captions, gameplay controls, or other essential information. If the overlay is blank, confirm that the URL was copied correctly and that the YouTube chat and broadcast are available.
StreamElements’ overlay guide and instructions for adding an overlay to OBS document this route. They establish one supported workflow, not that StreamElements is the only provider or that a particular overlay is free.

Embed YouTube chat on a website instead
If the goal is to show chat beside a video on your own website—not to place chat into the outgoing stream—YouTube documents an iframe URL built from the live video ID and the website’s domain:

- Get the video ID from the live watch-page URL.
- Use the domain of the page that will host the iframe as
YOUR_DOMAIN. - Put the completed URL in an iframe on that website page.
The embed_domain must match the hosting page’s domain or the chat will not open. YouTube says embedded live chat is not available on mobile web. Consult YouTube’s live-chat embedding instructions.

This iframe is a website embed, not a documented substitute for a transparent OBS chat widget. For chat inside the stream video, use the Browser-source overlay method above.

Fix common display problems
- The source is blank: check that the overlay URL belongs to the chat widget, that the stream and chat are available, and that the Browser source is in the scene currently being previewed.
- Chat is hidden behind the video: move the Browser source above the content it should overlay in OBS’s source order.
- Messages are too small or clipped: adjust the Browser source dimensions and overlay layout, then preview at the intended output size before going live.
- The website iframe does not open: make sure
embed_domainmatches the domain of the page hosting it. The YouTube iframe method is not available on mobile web.
