For a budget PC, start with H.264 video + AAC audio over RTMPS, using constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and 720p at 30 fps. Set H.264 video bitrate to YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps, then test whether your PC can encode continuously and your upload connection can sustain it with headroom. YouTube’s listed minimum for this profile is 3 Mbps; neither figure guarantees reliable performance on a particular computer or connection.
What “video format” means for a live stream
For live streaming, “format” usually means a combination of video codec, audio codec, transport protocol, resolution, frame rate and bitrate. A practical compatibility-first profile is H.264 video and AAC audio sent over RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended encrypted ingest option. YouTube also accepts H.265 and AV1, but support in the encoder depends on the computer; the available guidance does not establish that either is a better choice for a particular budget PC. MP4 is a container YouTube recommends for uploaded video files; it is not the live codec setting to choose in an encoder. For a prerecorded video you plan to stream, an MP4 upload file can be suitable, while the live encoder still sends a codec such as H.264. YouTube’s upload encoding settings

Choose resolution and frame rate by capacity
YouTube’s current H.264 live guidance lists the following bitrate examples. The values are ingest recommendations, not Indian broadband speed claims or PC benchmarks.

For a modest machine, begin at 720p30 rather than assuming a higher-resolution profile will hold up around the clock. Move to 1080p30 if the actual test shows spare encoder and network capacity; choose 60 fps only when smoother motion matters and the machine can sustain it. Check upload bandwidth and test the actual PC
- Measure upload speed under realistic conditions. Run a speed test when the stream would normally be active. Account for other people and devices using the same connection, and any backup feed. YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom; the entire stream bitrate must fit within the upload capacity available to the streamer. YouTube’s streaming tips
- Set 720p30 and the recommended 8 Mbps H.264 target. If your measured connection cannot sustain that target plus headroom, or the encoder overloads, reduce the bitrate and test again. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum for this profile, but a minimum is not a promise of stable results.
- Run a private or unlisted test stream before relying on it. Use representative audio and movement, watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators, and check the stream on your channel and on a phone. Protect the stream and its recordings
Copyright and reused material
Using prerecorded footage does not remove the need to have rights to the video and audio. Before broadcasting, check that you have permission for every visual and music track and follow YouTube’s copyright rules. Reused or repetitive material can also raise monetization-policy issues; a continuous stream is not a shortcut around those rules. Do not assume that a video being online or available to download means it is cleared for rebroadcast.
Streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its guidance says, “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” If preserving the full recording matters, record locally and check that the archive file is growing during the test. DVR rewind can also be limited
For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. This affects viewers trying to scrub back through the live broadcast; it is separate from whether you make your own local recording. YouTube’s DVR guidance
Local recording storage
If you need a backup, check that the local recording is being written and that the drive has enough free space for the desired retention. Required space depends on recording bitrate and duration; a faster or larger drive does not improve live encoding or prevent a stream from dropping.

Troubleshooting common problems
