Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor the clearest Hush audio, use headphones, keep VALORANT on Speaker Configuration = Stereo unless a properly installed Windows or headset spatial-audio system is active, and choose HRTF only if it gives you a more reliable front-versus-back image. Keep effects and voice communication audible, reduce music that masks cues, and react to the first directional sound with positioning and line-of-sight rather than simply increasing volume.
Recommended setup at a glance
Hush is VALORANT’s ninth Duelist and is scheduled for release on October 27, 2026, according to Dot Esports. Her kit makes directional information unusually important: Displacement can pull and concuss, Flashbulb can punish players who look at it, Flow provides a rapid entry route, and Suspension can levitate several players while being steered. The practical goal is not the loudest mix. It is a stable left-right and front-back image that lets you turn toward the source before the follow-up effect arrives.

| Choice | Use it when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Headphones + Stereo | You want the simplest dependable setup, or your operating-system spatial audio is not configured. | No extra spatial processing; direction comes from the game’s stereo mix and your headphones. |
| Headphones + Auto-Detect | Windows Spatial Audio or a headset manufacturer’s spatialization is enabled and its drivers work correctly. | More software layers mean more setup points and a greater chance of double processing or missing channels. |
| HRTF | The HRTF profile sounds natural to you and improves your ability to distinguish front from back. | Its benefit is individual. Riot does not describe any HRTF solution as a universal competitive advantage. |
| Speakers | Only when headphones are unavailable. | HRTF and third-party headphone spatial audio are designed for headphones, so speaker playback is not the intended use case. |
Why Hush rewards accurate localization
Hush’s documented abilities create two separate audio questions: where the threat is coming from, and what movement or visual response avoids the effect. Telekinesis is a passive that lets her interact at long range with dropped weapons, the Spike and switches; it is not itself the main reaction check. The four active abilities are the ones that should shape your listening habits.
| Ability | Documented mechanic | What your audio should help you do |
|---|---|---|
| Displacement (E) | A redirectable projectile that pulls players and can concuss them on collision. | Identify the launch direction quickly, turn your crosshair toward the source and move so the projectile or its collision path is less likely to connect. |
| Flashbulb (Q) | A redirectable flash. | Use the first cue to locate the throw, then break line of sight or turn away before the flash affects you. |
| Flow (C) | An anchor-based dash. | Treat the cue as a warning of a fast entry route; hold an angle that covers the likely arrival point instead of chasing the sound blindly. |
| Suspension (X) | A steerable projectile that levitates players in an area. | Locate the projectile and leave its affected space or use cover before the area control catches multiple teammates. |
No authoritative source in the available material establishes Hush-specific audio range, loudness or reaction-time figures. Do not build a sensitivity rule around an invented number. Train yourself to recognize direction and timing in your own mix.

Choose headphones and a processing path
Use headphones for directional cues
Riot’s audio guidance says HRTF and third-party spatial audio are intended for headphones, not speakers. Closed-back or open-back designs can both work; the important requirement is that the left and right channels are correctly connected and that the fit is consistent from match to match. If one earcup is loose, reversed or much louder than the other, every front-back judgment becomes less trustworthy.
Pick Stereo for a stable baseline
Set Speaker Configuration to Stereo when you want the straightforward configuration or when you are uncertain whether another spatial layer is active. Stereo avoids accidental double processing and is the safest fallback when Windows spatial audio or headset software has not been deliberately configured.
Use Auto-Detect only with a functioning spatial stack
Riot says Auto-Detect is the way to use third-party spatial audio. Select it only when Windows Spatial Audio or a manufacturer spatialization solution is enabled and the headset’s drivers are installed. If the operating system, headset utility and game all process the signal at once, localization can become smeared rather than sharper. If you cannot identify which component is doing the processing, return to Stereo and establish a clean baseline.
HRTF versus third-party spatial audio
Riot’s Patch Notes 8.0, published January 9, 2024, state that VALORANT supports third-party spatialization software for headphones and that the existing HRTF option remains available. The useful comparison is not which label sounds more advanced; it is which path gives you a repeatable directional image without discomfort or channel errors.

| Criterion | VALORANT HRTF | Third-party spatial audio |
|---|---|---|
| Directional clarity | Can make front/back cues clearer for some listeners; results depend on how well the profile matches your anatomy. | Can provide a different spatial model; judge it by whether you can consistently place a cue, not by the feature name. |
| Configuration reliability | Fewer external components when used as the game’s own processing option. | Requires the operating-system or headset spatial feature to be enabled and functioning. |
| Driver requirements | Still depends on a correctly functioning audio device. | USB virtual 7.1 headsets in particular need their manufacturer drivers; without the correct mix, center or surround sounds can be silent. |
| Comfort | Keep it only if the positional effect sounds natural and does not cause fatigue. | Keep it only if the added processing remains clear and comfortable over a full session. |
| Competitive guarantee | None. Riot says no particular HRTF solution is a universal advantage. | None. A more elaborate signal path is not automatically more accurate for your ears. |
Test one path at a time. Compare the same practice scenario, with the same volume and headset position, and ask whether you can tell front from back without second-guessing. If the answer is no, use the simpler path rather than stacking effects.
Configure VALORANT step by step
- Connect the headphones you will use in matches and confirm that the left channel is on your left and the right channel is on your right.
- Open VALORANT’s
Settings, then open theAudiosection. - Find
Speaker Configuration. SelectStereofor the clean baseline. - If you have deliberately enabled Windows Spatial Audio or a headset spatialization feature and its drivers are installed, select
Auto-Detectinstead. Do not enable multiple spatial modes simultaneously unless the software documentation specifically requires that arrangement. - Keep the game’s effects channel high enough to hear ability cues, footsteps and impacts clearly. Keep voice communication audible so teammate callouts can corroborate what you hear.
- Lower music and other masking sounds before raising the overall master volume. Loudness cannot repair a reversed channel, a missing center signal or a double-processed mix.
- Play a short practice sequence and rotate your view toward sounds from the left, right, front and rear. Keep the setting that gives you the most reliable image without strain.
Driver and operating-system checks
USB virtual 7.1 headsets
Riot warns that USB virtual 7.1 devices can lose center or surround sounds when the correct manufacturer driver or mix is missing. Install and select the headset’s proper driver profile before judging HRTF or Auto-Detect. If voices or effects seem to vanish from the middle, temporarily switch VALORANT to Stereo and verify the driver before changing any in-game volume.
Windows or headset spatialization
Third-party spatial audio is a complete signal path, not merely a toggle in VALORANT. Confirm that the intended Windows or headset spatial feature is actually enabled, that the game is using the same output device, and that no separate utility is silently applying another surround mode. If the result sounds hollow, delayed or less directional, disable the external layer and compare Stereo again.

- Effects: preserve the channel that carries ability cues, movement and impact sounds.
- Voice communication: keep teammate callouts intelligible; a verbal warning can confirm an uncertain direction.
- Music and decorative audio: reduce these first when they mask short cues.
- Master volume: set it at a comfortable level that you can sustain. Excessive volume increases fatigue and does not create missing directional information.
Make changes in small steps and listen for whether a short cue becomes easier to separate from the background. If turning everything up makes the mix tiring, undo that change and lower masking channels instead.
How to react to each Hush ability
Displacement: turn toward the source, then deny the path
Displacement is a redirectable projectile that pulls players and can concuss them on collision. The first directional cue should prompt a fast camera or crosshair turn toward the suspected source. Once you have the direction, use cover, a side-step or a change of position to make the projectile’s route harder to complete. Do not stand still while trying to identify the sound perfectly; the value of localization is giving you enough information to move before the follow-up effect.
Because the projectile can be redirected, the initial direction is information about the current threat, not a guarantee that its final path will remain unchanged. Keep line-of-sight and nearby cover in mind after the first turn.
Flashbulb: deny line of sight
Flashbulb is a redirectable flash. When you hear its cue and cannot immediately confirm the source visually, avoid looking into likely travel lanes. A fast turn away or a move behind cover is more dependable than trying to overpower the sound with a louder volume setting. Once the threat is identified, your goal is to break the flash’s line of sight rather than chase Hush’s exact position.

Flow: expect a rapid entry
Flow uses an anchor-based dash. Treat its cue as an entry warning: Hush may arrive faster than a normal swing would allow. Turn toward the sound, keep your crosshair on the most plausible arrival angle and communicate the route if a teammate can hold the complementary angle. Audio tells you where to look; your crosshair placement and cover determine whether the dash converts into a kill.
Suspension: leave the affected area
Suspension is a steerable projectile that levitates players in an area. Because it can affect multiple players, the best response is often spatial separation: identify the projectile’s direction, move out of the suspected area and warn teammates instead of remaining grouped. If you are already caught, use whatever movement or cover options remain available and avoid assuming that a single-player dodge solves the team-wide danger.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not rely on ability-equipping sounds from allies
Riot’s Patch Notes 7.08, published October 17, 2023, say: “Ability equipping sounds are no longer audible to your Allies.” That change means an ally’s ability-selection sound is not a dependable early warning for Hush or any other agent. Learn the actual emitted ability cues and corroborate them with visual information, the minimap and teammate communication. Hearing nothing from an ally does not prove that no ability is being prepared.

A practical listening drill
- Use the same headset and processing mode you use in matches.
- Start with Stereo and a comfortable master volume. Listen for cues from each side and from in front of and behind your position.
- Turn your view toward the apparent source before moving. This isolates localization from reaction movement.
- Repeat with HRTF enabled, if available, and then with your correctly configured third-party spatial mode. Change only one processing option at a time.
- Keep the mode that produces the most consistent front/back judgment and the least fatigue, not the mode that sounds widest or loudest.
- Once the direction is clear, practice the appropriate response: break line of sight for Flashbulb, move off the projectile path for Displacement, hold the likely entry for Flow and leave the area for Suspension.
Troubleshooting common problems
Everything sounds wide but front and back are confusing
Return to Stereo, disable external spatial processing and verify that the headset channels are correctly oriented. Re-enable one spatial option at a time. HRTF can help some listeners, but Riot notes that personal anatomy and preference affect how natural its localization sounds.

Center or surround cues disappear
Check the driver and profile for a USB virtual 7.1 headset. Riot specifically warns that missing or incorrect manufacturer drivers can silence center or surround sounds. Use Stereo while correcting the device configuration.
The mix is fatiguing or distorted
Lower the master volume, reduce music and other masking channels, and remove duplicate spatial processing. A comfortable, stable image is more useful over a full match than an exaggerated effect that becomes tiring.
You hear a cue but cannot find Hush
Use the first cue to turn toward the source, then combine it with line-of-sight, minimap information and teammate callouts. Directional audio narrows the search; it does not reveal an opponent through walls or guarantee the projectile’s final route, especially when an ability is redirectable or steerable.
What the available evidence does not establish
The documented material does not provide a Hush-specific audio range, loudness measurement or required reaction time. It also does not identify a universally superior HRTF profile, headset or mixer percentage. Any claim that one exact volume, device type or millisecond threshold guarantees a response would go beyond the established information. Use the settings above as a controlled way to preserve directional cues, then judge your own consistency in practice.
Bottom line for competitive play
Start with headphones and Stereo. Move to Auto-Detect only when your Windows or headset spatial-audio path is intentionally enabled and its drivers are correct. Keep HRTF if it makes front-versus-back placement more natural for you; otherwise, use the simpler option. Protect effects and voice communication from masking, and respond to Hush by turning toward the first cue, breaking line of sight or moving out of the threatened area. Her abilities reward accurate direction and quick positioning, not indiscriminate volume.
