For most buyers, choose a Palm Tungsten T3. It combines Palm OS 5.2.1, a sharp 320×480 color display, Bluetooth 1.1 and SD expansion, making it the most flexible used Palm for classic applications, games and utilities. Choose the Palm TX instead if built-in 802.11b Wi‑Fi is essential; choose the Tungsten E2 for a simpler OS 5 device with a 320×320 screen; and choose the m515 when you specifically need the original 160×160 Palm OS 4.1 environment.
These are two-decade-old computers, so the model decision is only half the job. Battery condition, digitizer wear, buttons, expansion-card compatibility and the ability to synchronize with your current computer determine whether a bargain becomes a usable retro system.

Quick picks
| Best for | Model | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Most classic Palm software | Palm Tungsten T3 | Palm OS 5.2.1, 320×480 color screen, Bluetooth 1.1 and SD expansion. |
| Built-in wireless networking | Palm TX | Palm OS 5.4.9, 320×480 color screen, 802.11b Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth 1.1 and SD expansion. |
| Simple color OS 5 handheld | Tungsten E2 | Palm OS 5.4.7, 320×320 color screen, Bluetooth 1.1 and SD expansion. |
| Original low-resolution software | Palm m515 | Palm OS 4.1, 160×160 color screen and SD expansion. |
The T3 is the safest general recommendation because it offers the broadest combination of screen space, OS 5 software support and expansion without requiring Wi‑Fi. The TX adds useful period networking, but its wireless hardware should be treated as a retro-computing feature rather than a guarantee that modern online services will work.

What matters when choosing a used Palm
Software era and screen assumptions
Palm applications were written for specific generations of the operating system and display. Palm OS 4.1 devices such as the m515 present a 160×160 interface. Later OS 5 handhelds use higher-resolution displays, including 320×320 and 320×480 panels. Many older programs remain usable on newer devices, but a program designed around the 160×160 screen may appear in a compatibility area, use only part of the display or behave differently on a high-resolution model. Conversely, a high-resolution application cannot create detail that a 160×160 screen does not have.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a mixed library of organizers, dictionaries, games and utilities, an OS 5 handheld is usually the more practical target. If your collection is centered on software whose layout or graphics were authored specifically for the original Palm OS interface, the m515 gives the most faithful experience.
Connectivity
The T3, E2 and TX include Bluetooth 1.1. The TX additionally includes 802.11b Wi‑Fi. Bluetooth can be useful for period peripherals or short-range file transfers, while the TX’s Wi‑Fi is mainly valuable for experimentation with compatible legacy services. Do not assume that a current website, certificate chain, cloud account or app store will work through a Palm browser simply because the handheld can join a network.
Expansion and storage
All four recommendations use standard SD expansion. An archived HP compatibility table lists the following maximum standard-SD capacities as tested: 1GB for the Tungsten T3, 2GB for the Palm TX, 1GB for the Tungsten E2 and 1GB for the m515. These are test limits, not promises that every card of that size will behave identically.
HP also cautions that higher-capacity cards may not work and that a device might fail to recognize content or free space above the tested limit. In particular, do not assume an SDHC card will work merely because its printed capacity is within a nominal range. Buy a standard, non-SDHC SD card at or below the model’s tested limit and format it in a way the handheld and its software recognize.
Restoration burden
Age-related failures are more important than small specification differences. A dead battery can make a unit appear defective; a worn digitizer can make otherwise good software impossible to operate; and a missing cradle or cable can turn setup into a separate hunt. The listing should identify the exact model, not just “Palm PDA,” and should show the screen powered on whenever possible.
Palm Tungsten T3: best all-round used choice
The Tungsten T3 was released in October 2003. Palm OS Wiki lists Palm OS 5.2.1, a 320×480 color display, Bluetooth 1.1 and SDIO/SD/MMC expansion. That combination makes it the strongest general-purpose platform for a varied classic Palm library.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Why the T3 works well
- The 320×480 display provides substantially more workspace than the m515’s 160×160 panel.
- Palm OS 5.2.1 is a later software baseline than Palm OS 4.1, suitable for many applications written for the OS 5 generation.
- Bluetooth supports period-correct peripherals and local transfers without requiring a network.
- SD expansion allows a practical library of documents and installers when used with a compatible standard card.
HP’s archived table lists 1GB as the maximum tested standard-SD size for the T3. Treat that as the upper tested boundary, not a recommendation to buy an unverified high-capacity card.

Do not choose the T3 solely because a listing advertises a large card or a “working battery.” Batteries and digitizers are consumable parts, and seller descriptions vary. If you specifically need built-in Wi‑Fi, the TX is the appropriate alternative. If your goal is strict 160×160 compatibility, the m515 is a better match.
Palm TX: best when Wi‑Fi is a requirement
The Palm TX was released on October 12, 2005. Palm OS Wiki lists Palm OS 5.4.9, a 320×480 color display, 802.11b Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth 1.1 and SDIO/SD/MMC expansion.
What the TX adds
The TX is the only recommendation here with integrated 802.11b. That makes it useful for demonstrating legacy wireless workflows, connecting to a suitably configured local network or using compatible period software without a separate adapter. Its 320×480 display and OS 5.4.9 baseline also make it a capable classic-software machine even when Wi‑Fi is never used.
HP lists 2GB as the maximum tested standard-SD capacity for the TX. Use a standard SD card, not an SDHC card, and stay within that tested limit. The higher number does not remove the need to verify that the specific card, formatting and application can be read by the handheld.
Modern-network caveat
802.11b describes the radio standard, not compatibility with today’s internet. Encryption modes, certificates, DNS behavior, TLS versions and web pages have changed dramatically since the TX was released. A successful association with a local access point does not establish that modern web services will load or authenticate.

Tungsten E2: straightforward OS 5 alternative
The Tungsten E2 uses Palm OS 5.4.7, a 320×320 color display, Bluetooth 1.1 and SD expansion. It is a sensible choice when you want an OS 5 color handheld but have no need for the TX’s Wi‑Fi or the T3’s 320×480 layout.
Where it fits
- Its 320×320 display is a clear step up from the m515 for applications that support high resolution.
- Palm OS 5.4.7 provides a later software environment than Palm OS 4.1.
- Bluetooth offers local connectivity without adding the networking complexity of Wi‑Fi.
- HP lists 1GB as the maximum tested standard-SD capacity.
The E2’s square screen can be an advantage for software designed around a 320×320 layout, but a program expecting the T3 or TX’s 320×480 area will not gain that extra vertical space on the E2.
Palm m515: best for the original Palm OS 4.1 experience
The Palm m515 was released on March 4, 2002. Palm OS Wiki lists Palm OS 4.1, a 160×160 color display and SD expansion. It is the specialist choice for software and games authored around the early Palm interface.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy lower resolution can be the right resolution
Classic Palm software often assumes the dimensions and controls of a 160×160 device. On the m515, those assumptions are native rather than emulated or displayed in a compatibility region. Pixel-art games, compact forms and older utilities can therefore look and feel exactly as their authors intended.
The trade-off is less workspace and a less capable software baseline than the OS 5 models. The m515 also lacks the T3, E2 and TX’s Bluetooth and has no built-in Wi‑Fi. HP lists 1GB as the maximum tested standard-SD capacity.
Specification comparison
| Model | Release date | Operating system | Display | Wireless | Expansion | HP-tested standard SD maximum |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Palm m515 | March 4, 2002 | Palm OS 4.1 | 160×160 color | Not listed | SD | 1GB |
| Tungsten T3 | October 2003 | Palm OS 5.2.1 | 320×480 color | Bluetooth 1.1 | SDIO/SD/MMC | 1GB |
| Tungsten E2 | Not stated in the supplied specifications | Palm OS 5.4.7 | 320×320 color | Bluetooth 1.1 | SD | 1GB |
| Palm TX | October 12, 2005 | Palm OS 5.4.9 | 320×480 color | 802.11b Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth 1.1 | SDIO/SD/MMC | 2GB |
“Maximum” in the final column means the capacity tested in the archived HP table. It does not guarantee support for every card, filesystem or application, and it does not imply SDHC support.

How to evaluate a listing before buying
- Confirm the exact model. Ask for a photograph of the system-information screen or clear photographs of the front and rear. Similar Palm housings can be confused in listings.
- Check battery evidence. Ask how long the device runs after a full charge. If the answer is unknown, include a replacement battery in your budget and assume the original may be unusable.
- Test the digitizer. Have the seller open the launcher or a notes application and tap corners, edges and the center. Missed areas, drifting taps or a stylus that must be pressed hard indicate digitizer wear.
- Test physical controls. Confirm every application button, the scroll controls and the power switch respond consistently. A working screen does not prove that navigation controls work.
- Inspect the SD slot. Verify that a card can be inserted, latched and read. Corroded contacts or a loose slot can be more difficult to repair than a missing card.
- Verify the connector and accessories. Confirm whether the package includes a cradle, USB cable or serial cable and identify the connector type. A cable for one Palm family may not fit another.
- Request a return window. A return period is valuable protection for a device that is roughly two decades old, especially when the listing cannot demonstrate synchronization or battery runtime.
Restoring software and synchronization
Obtain setup files when the CD is missing
PalmDB maintains model-specific setup images for several devices, including filenames such as Palm_Tungsten_T3_Win.iso and Palm_TX.iso. Those images can replace a missing original CD, but you still need an appropriate cable or cradle and a desktop operating system that can run the required software.

Expect a legacy desktop-software project
The Tungsten C handbook documents historical desktop requirements including Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 or Windows XP, and Mac OS X 10.1.2 or later. It also notes that some configurations require a USB or serial port and a separately sold cradle or cable. These requirements describe the period software environment, not a guarantee that a current Windows or macOS installation will synchronize directly.
Before buying, decide how you will provide that environment. Options include a preserved older computer, a compatible virtual machine with access to the required USB or serial hardware, or a dedicated legacy setup. Confirm that the desktop application can see the port, that the cradle presents the expected connection and that the Palm’s user name and backup path are configured.
First synchronization sequence
- Charge the handheld fully and perform a reset only if the device is unresponsive; do not erase data before confirming you have installers and backups.
- Install the appropriate Palm desktop software from original media or a model-specific setup image.
- Connect the matching cradle or cable and install any required driver for the legacy operating system.
- Place the handheld in the cradle or connect the cable, then initiate a HotSync from the desktop software or the device’s HotSync application.
- Confirm that the desktop creates a backup and that the handheld completes the operation without disconnecting.
- Install one application at a time, synchronizing after each installation so a faulty database can be identified and removed.
Installing classic applications safely
Keep a copy of every installer and the device’s backup folder before experimenting. Palm software commonly consists of one or more database files plus a desktop conduit. A program may install correctly while a missing conduit prevents desktop data exchange, so distinguish “the application launches” from “the application synchronizes.”
Start with software known to match the device’s OS generation and screen assumptions. On a high-resolution OS 5 handheld, test older 160×160 applications individually; on the m515, avoid assuming that an OS 5-only application will run. If an application resets the device, remove the most recently installed databases from the backup or use the launcher and a desktop restore to recover.

The card is not recognized
- Check that the card is standard SD rather than SDHC.
- Try a lower-capacity card within the model’s HP-tested limit.
- Back up the card and reformat it with a filesystem the Palm software expects.
- Inspect and gently clean contacts; do not force a card into a damaged slot.
The handheld loses data after power-off
An exhausted or failing battery can cause resets or data loss. Replace the battery before judging application stability, then perform a full charge and test several power cycles. Keep desktop backups because a battery replacement or hard reset can erase RAM.

Taps do not line up with the stylus
Run the built-in digitizer calibration and test the entire panel again. If calibration cannot correct a dead strip or persistent offset, the digitizer needs repair or the unit should be returned. Do not mistake a software calibration problem for a defective application.
Synchronization stops partway through
Check the cable or cradle, the legacy driver and the desktop port first. Try a direct USB port rather than an unpowered hub, or use the correct serial adapter for a serial cradle. If one application always causes the failure, remove its conduit or database from the next backup and test a clean synchronization.

What to budget for besides the handheld
Current used prices and stock vary by seller and date, and no reliable market-price statistic is established here. Plan the purchase around the parts that determine whether the device can actually be used: a replacement battery if runtime is uncertain, a standard SD card within the tested limit, the correct sync cradle or cable, and a computer or virtualized legacy environment capable of running the desktop software.
Useful search descriptions include “used Palm Tungsten T3 handheld,” “1GB standard SD card for Palm Tungsten T3,” “2GB standard SD card for Palm TX,” “replacement battery for Palm Tungsten T3/TX/E2,” “Palm sync cradle” and “Palm USB or serial sync cable.” Match every accessory to the exact model and connector shown in the listing; a generic description is not proof of compatibility.
Final recommendation
Buy the Tungsten T3 unless one of the specialist requirements changes the decision. It offers the best balance of Palm OS 5 software compatibility, a spacious 320×480 display, Bluetooth and expandable storage. Select the Palm TX for built-in 802.11b, the Tungsten E2 for a simpler 320×320 OS 5 handheld, or the m515 when preserving the 160×160 Palm OS 4.1 experience matters more than later hardware.
