One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchBuy tires first when wheelspin or poor grip is the reason your current vehicle keeps failing. Tires are the only upgrade with a clearly documented performance benefit: the developer has confirmed that tire upgrades increase grip. Repair a damaged vehicle before upgrading it, keep the winch available for recovery, and postpone expensive or speculative purchases until you know which vehicle you intend to keep. Upgrades can be unmounted, but they cannot be sold or transferred to another car, and a Pebble refund has not been established.
The short answer: what to buy first
Your first Pebble purchase should solve the failure that is stopping your current run, not follow a universal ranking. For most players, that means tires when the wheels spin, the vehicle slides, or a climb fails because of traction. Grip is the tire upgrade’s documented benefit, although no percentage increase or guaranteed hill-climb result has been published.

If the vehicle is already damaged, repair it before spending Pebbles on an upgrade. An upgrade has not been documented as a substitute for repairs. If the immediate problem is being stranded, use the reusable winch and situation-specific recovery tools rather than assuming a winch upgrade will pull harder. The available evidence does not establish increased winch force.
Speed, protection and tool capacity are legitimate upgrade axes, but their exact effects and ideal order are not documented well enough to call one of them the best first purchase for every vehicle. Make one change, repeat the same obstacle under similar conditions, and keep your Pebbles available until your vehicle choice is settled.

What Pebbles are for
Pebbles are Over the Hill’s vehicle-upgrade currency. TechRadar’s game coverage describes earning them while exploring maps and discovering points of interest (POIs). Crates, trial challenges, scenic points and wildlife discoveries also provide progression currency. That makes exploration itself part of your upgrade budget rather than merely a way to reach the next objective.
The economy has a practical late-game safety valve. Funselektor developer Pete_MG wrote: “POIs alone will give you enough pebble to buy upgrades for most of the vehicles, to complete 100% of the unlocks you’ll need to extract a few meteorites (which are infinite).” The statement describes availability, not an earnings rate: it does not tell you how many Pebbles a particular POI or meteorite provides, nor the price of any individual upgrade.

| Can upgrades be moved? | They can be unmounted from their vehicle. | Moving an upgrade to another vehicle is not supported by the developer’s statement. |
| Can I sell an upgrade or recover Pebbles? | No sale or refund behavior has been established. | A refund amount, refund window or resale system. |
| Does a winch upgrade pull harder? | The winch is available and reusable for recovery. | Any increase in pulling force from a winch upgrade. |
| What are exact upgrade prices? | The in-game shop shows the current price before purchase. | A reliable published price list or universal cost order. |
Diagnose the failure before spending
Use the symptom that ends your attempt as the buying signal. The same vehicle can need different equipment on different routes, and a vehicle body can differ in speed and handling even though the game does not list those statistics.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Wheelspin, sliding or failed climbs
Start with tires when the wheels spin instead of moving the vehicle forward, the car slides on a slope, or a route repeatedly fails because the tires cannot maintain contact. This is the clearest documented first-use case. Weather and tire condition also affect grip, so a comparison made in different weather or with different tire wear can mislead you.
Damage that ends the attempt
Repair first when damage, rather than traction, is what prevents progress. A protection-oriented upgrade may eventually suit a route where impacts are frequent, but the available material does not establish how much protection any particular part adds. Do not treat a new part as a repair kit.
Being stranded or unable to return
Use the winch and the appropriate recovery item when the problem is recovery. The winch is always available and reusable. Portable anchors, planks, camps, repair kits and jacks are loadout tools for particular situations; they are not interchangeable upgrades to speed or grip.

Arriving too slowly
Speed is one of the useful upgrade axes, but no published source establishes a complete engine effect, a percentage gain or a best speed-first build. Consider speed only after you have confirmed that grip, damage or recovery is not the actual bottleneck.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Running out of equipment
Tool capacity is another recognized axis. A capacity purchase makes sense when a run consistently fails because you cannot carry enough recovery or repair equipment. The exact capacity increase and the price are shown in the current in-game description, not in a reliable public specification.
Why tires are the safest first purchase
Tires address the failure players can observe most directly: insufficient grip. The developer confirmation gives this purchase a stronger factual basis than assumptions about engine, suspension, protection or winch parts. That does not make tires universally optimal. A vehicle that already has enough traction but repeatedly breaks or runs out of tools may gain more from a different category.
A practical tire test
- Choose one obstacle or short route that regularly defeats the vehicle.
- Record the conditions you can observe, including weather, visible tire condition and vehicle damage.
- Read the current tire-upgrade description and price in the vehicle’s upgrade screen. Do not rely on an old list or a remembered cost.
- Purchase the tire upgrade only if the displayed cost is acceptable for the vehicle you expect to keep.
- Retry the same obstacle with similar weather, tire condition and damage. Change no other upgrade or loadout item.
- Judge the result by the failure you were trying to fix: less wheelspin, less sliding or a more consistent climb. Do not convert one successful attempt into a claimed percentage improvement.
If the same obstacle still fails for a reason unrelated to traction, stop buying tire levels and diagnose the new failure instead. A tire upgrade cannot be expected to repair damage, add carrying slots or make a stranded vehicle recover itself.
Tires or a winch: which comes first?
Choose based on whether you are failing before movement or after becoming stuck. Tires are a performance purchase with a documented grip benefit. The winch is recovery equipment that is already available and reusable. The evidence does not support saying that a winch upgrade increases pull strength, so buy or equip recovery tools for access to recovery options, not for an assumed force multiplier.

| Your recurring problem | First response | Why | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wheels spin on a climb | Tires | Grip improvement is explicitly documented. | There is no published percentage gain or guaranteed climb result. |
| You are stranded after a mistake | Winch and the relevant recovery tool | The winch is available and reusable; anchors, planks, camps, repair kits and jacks cover specific situations. | A winch upgrade has not been shown to increase pulling force. |
| Impacts leave the vehicle unusable | Repair, then consider protection | Repair addresses existing damage; protection may address repeated future impacts. | Protection values and an upgrade’s damage reduction are not published. |
| You cannot carry the needed tools | Capacity | Tool capacity is a recognized upgrade axis. | The exact slot increase is not established outside the current in-game description. |
How recovery equipment differs from upgrades
It is easy to treat every item in the vehicle screen as a performance upgrade, but recovery equipment serves a different purpose. The reusable winch helps you recover from a bad position. Portable anchors and planks can create a way through or back out in situations where a direct pull is not enough. Camps, repair kits and jacks address other recovery or maintenance situations. Their value depends on the route and the mistake you are trying to recover from.

Before spending Pebbles, ask whether the problem can be solved by carrying the right tool or changing your route. If the answer is yes, an equipment decision may be more efficient than a permanent vehicle upgrade. No comparative prices or universal loadout have been established, so use the current item descriptions and the failure you expect on the next route.
Speed, protection and capacity: when to consider them
Speed
Speed can reduce travel time, but travel time is not the same as successful traversal. If a faster vehicle still spins its wheels, takes damaging impacts or becomes stranded, a speed purchase has not solved the underlying problem. Because vehicle bodies already differ in speed and handling and the game does not list those stats, compare the vehicle you are driving with the route you actually need to complete before committing Pebbles.
Protection
Protection is a sensible category when repeated collisions are the cause of failure. Start by repairing the existing vehicle. Then use the in-game description to determine what the proposed protection part claims to address. There is no reliable published percentage for damage reduction, durability or the number of impacts it can absorb, so treat the purchase as a targeted experiment rather than a guaranteed durability breakpoint.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTool capacity
Capacity matters when the route demands more anchors, planks, camps, repair kits or jacks than your current loadout can carry. It is most useful after you have identified the exact item shortage. Buying capacity without knowing which tool you need can consume Pebbles while leaving the actual failure unchanged.
Unmounters, transfers and the risk of buying for the wrong car
Upgrades stay associated with the vehicle they were installed on. Pete_MG’s statement says upgrades can be unmounted, but cannot be sold or moved to another car. That makes an unmount different from a refund: removing a part does not establish that the Pebbles return to your balance.
Plan around that limitation when you unlock vehicles. If you are still testing several cars, spend only on a problem that the current vehicle must solve now. If a new vehicle is likely to replace it, save Pebbles until you have compared the new vehicle’s behavior and decided which one will remain in your regular rotation.

A conservative purchase checklist
- Do I know the exact failure I am fixing?
- Does the upgrade description address that failure?
- Is the displayed price current for this vehicle and edition?
- Will I keep using this vehicle after unlocking another one?
- Am I comfortable treating the Pebbles as committed if no refund is offered?
- Could a repair, route change or loadout tool solve the problem instead?
A one-upgrade-at-a-time spending method
When the game does not publish complete performance numbers, controlled comparison is more useful than a tier list. The following method keeps your conclusion tied to an observable result.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Set a baseline. Run the same short route twice if practical. Note where the vehicle stops, spins, slides, takes damage or runs out of equipment.
- Separate conditions from hardware. Weather and tire condition affect grip. Keep those as similar as possible, and do not compare a healthy vehicle with a damaged one.
- Read before buying. The current in-game screen is the authoritative place for the item’s displayed description and price. Public guides do not provide a complete, reliable price table.
- Install one change. Do not combine tires, protection, capacity and a new loadout if you want to know which decision helped.
- Repeat the baseline. Use the same obstacle and route. A single success proves that the attempt succeeded; it does not establish a universal performance gain.
- Keep or unmount deliberately. If the part fixes the recurring failure, leave it installed. If it does not, unmounting is possible, but do not count on selling it or recovering Pebbles.
How to preserve Pebbles while unlocking vehicles
POIs can fund upgrades for most vehicles according to the developer, and meteorites are infinite if you are pursuing complete unlocks. That does not mean every upgrade is free or that every vehicle should be upgraded immediately. It means exploration provides a path to rebuild your currency over time, while an upgrade tied to an abandoned vehicle remains an inefficient commitment.
Use a staged budget:
- Early exploration: collect nearby POIs, crates, trials, scenic points and wildlife discoveries while learning which vehicle handles your routes.
- First committed vehicle: buy the smallest targeted upgrade that addresses a repeated failure, usually tires for a grip problem.
- Vehicle unlock period: keep a reserve instead of spending on speculative speed or protection while comparing newly available cars.
- Completion phase: use additional exploration and, if needed, meteorite extraction. Meteorites are described as infinite, but no measured extraction rate is established.
This approach avoids assuming that a later transfer or refund will rescue a purchase made on the wrong vehicle.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Buying the most expensive part first
Cost is not evidence of relevance. Without published prices, percentage gains or a universal ranking, the expensive option may address a problem you do not have. Match the part to the failure and test one variable.
Calling a winch upgrade a stronger winch
The winch’s documented value is recovery availability and reusability. No source establishes increased pulling force from an upgrade. Use the winch because it helps recover the vehicle, not because a stronger pull has been proven.
Recommended Free Tools
Testing tires in different conditions
Weather and tire condition change grip. A dry-weather run after a tire change cannot be compared cleanly with a wet-weather run before it. Repeat the same route under similar conditions before deciding that the upgrade caused the improvement.
Best Value
Upgrading a damaged vehicle
Repair first. A new part is not documented as a replacement for a repair kit or other maintenance action.
Assuming unmount means refund
Unmounting only means the part can be removed from its vehicle. The developer’s statement does not establish a sale or refund, so budget as though the Pebbles are committed.
Using cosmetics as a performance purchase
Cosmetic items are outside this upgrade decision. No documented evidence here shows that cosmetics improve traversal, grip, protection, speed or capacity.
A decision table for your next purchase
| If your next run fails because… | Buy or do first | Evidence level | Decision boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traction disappears on a slope or loose surface | Install tires | Explicit grip benefit confirmed by the developer | Stop if the remaining failure is damage, recovery or equipment capacity. |
| The vehicle is already damaged | Repair it | Repair is the direct response; an upgrade substitute is not documented | Only then evaluate protection for repeated future impacts. |
| You become stuck and need to get out | Use the reusable winch and suitable loadout tools | Recovery function is documented | Do not pay on the assumption of greater pull strength. |
| You run out of anchors, planks, camps, repair kits or jacks | Consider tool capacity | Capacity is a recognized upgrade axis | Confirm which item shortage is recurring before buying. |
| The route is safe but takes too long | Consider speed | Speed is a recognized axis, but exact gains are not published | Do not sacrifice the grip or durability that makes the route finishable. |
| You keep taking damaging impacts | Repair, then investigate protection | Protection is a recognized axis; exact reduction is not stated | Use the current description and test the same hazard. |
What a “best build” guide cannot honestly promise
There is no reliable universal order with published prices, percentage gains, earnings rates or complete engine and suspension effects. The game also does not list all vehicle speed and handling statistics. A build that is ideal for a traction-limited climb may be wasteful for a route dominated by damage or tool shortages.
The most defensible rule is therefore conditional: buy the part that fixes the failure you can reproduce, with tires first for a confirmed grip problem, and postpone unverified optimization until your vehicle and route are known. Record what changed, keep conditions comparable, and treat every vehicle-specific purchase as non-transferable unless the game explicitly changes that behavior.
