Short answer: there is no UK carrier service documented here as a confirmed replacement for Apple’s two-iPhone Handoff. Apple’s feature can put one mobile number on two iPhones, but it only works when the carrier explicitly supports it. The closest established UK option is Vodafone OneNumber for an untethered cellular Apple Watch or tablet. O2 Sharer Plans can distribute data to other devices, but O2 says the service is being discontinued and it does not share one calling and texting number between two iPhones.
The important distinction is between number sharing and plan or data sharing. A second iPhone needs Apple’s Handoff capability and carrier participation. A watch or tablet can use a companion service such as OneNumber, while a data-sharing plan gives another device internet access without cloning your phone number.

What Apple iPhone Handoff actually provides
Apple describes iPhone Handoff as a way to use the same phone number on two iPhones and switch between them. Calls, voicemail, messages and synced iCloud data follow whichever iPhone is active. Only one iPhone is active on the mobile network at a time, so this is not two independent phones making simultaneous cellular connections.

The feature has several conditions:
- Both iPhones use the same Apple Account.
- The second iPhone receives an eSIM associated with the service.
- Your mobile carrier must participate. Apple advises customers to confirm support with their carrier before trying to set it up.
- The two devices need compatible software and network support; Apple’s documentation is the authority for the exact iOS requirements for your devices.
Those requirements matter in the UK because a carrier can offer multi-device connectivity without supporting two iPhones. A service that shares data with a watch or tablet is not automatically capable of provisioning the eSIM and number hand-off that Apple’s feature needs.

Is there a confirmed UK alternative for two iPhones?
No carrier page identified for this comparison confirms a competing UK service that duplicates one number across two iPhones in the Apple Handoff sense. That does not prove that no carrier will support it; carrier portfolios and eligibility rules change. It does mean you should not buy a second iPhone expecting a generic “multi-SIM” or “number share” add-on to work.
Ask the carrier a narrowly worded question: “Do you support Apple iPhone Handoff for one number on two iPhones, including provisioning an eSIM on the second iPhone?” Ask for confirmation for your exact tariff, account type and iPhone models. A representative who describes only smartwatch, tablet or data sharing is describing a different product.
EE Smart Number versus Apple Handoff
EE’s Smart Number terms describe a primary iPhone sharing its number with up to five paired Apple devices. The supported companions include an Apple Watch and iPad, but the terms expressly exclude iPhones as paired devices. The primary iPhone must be switched on and have coverage for SMS.
That is why EE Smart Number should not be treated as proof that EE supports two-iPhone Handoff. It is an Apple-device companion service with a specific device list. Apple’s newer Handoff documentation is a separate capability designed specifically for two iPhones and an eSIM on the second handset.

Vodafone OneNumber: the closest practical substitute
Vodafone OneNumber is the strongest documented choice when your real goal is to leave your phone behind while keeping a connected Apple Watch or tablet useful. Vodafone says it shares the primary mobile plan’s data, minutes and messages with a paired smartwatch or tablet. The advertised starting price is £7.50 per month, subject to an eligible Vodafone Pay Monthly Airtime Plan and compatible cellular hardware.
What devices it supports
Vodafone lists cellular Apple Watch Series 3 and newer generations as compatible. The watch must be a cellular model, not a GPS-only model. Compatibility can also depend on the exact watch generation, region and software, so check the current eligibility checker before ordering connectivity.
Vodafone states that iPads can use the phone’s data allowance through OneNumber but cannot receive calls and texts through the service. That makes an iPad a data companion, not a second handset with the same full telephone experience.
How the connection behaves away from your phone
When the secondary device is within Bluetooth range, it can use the normal phone-to-device connection. Vodafone explains that when it leaves Bluetooth range, it can switch to the mobile network. On supported devices, calls and messages can continue over that cellular connection. The account relationship remains tied to the primary mobile: the connected device shares the primary account’s allowances rather than becoming a separate mobile contract.
Eligibility checklist
- An eligible Vodafone Pay Monthly Airtime Plan.
- A cellular Apple Watch or another device Vodafone lists as compatible.
- A primary Vodafone mobile account to which the companion device can be paired.
- Hardware and software that meet Vodafone’s current activation requirements.
- A willingness to pay the recurring OneNumber fee, advertised from £7.50 per month at the date above; your actual price may vary by plan or promotion.
Activation sequence
- Check the current Vodafone OneNumber page and your account for tariff eligibility before buying a watch or tablet.
- Confirm that the device is the cellular edition and appears on Vodafone’s supported-device list.
- Pair the device with the primary mobile using the setup flow supplied by Vodafone and the device manufacturer.
- Accept the additional monthly connectivity charge and any account terms shown during activation.
- Test a call, a message and mobile data with the companion device away from the primary phone’s Bluetooth range.
- If activation fails, record the exact device model, software versions and tariff name before contacting Vodafone; those details determine eligibility.
OneNumber is therefore a good answer to “How can I use my number on an Apple Watch without carrying my iPhone?” It is not an answer to “How can I put my number on a second iPhone?”
O2 Sharer Plans: useful for data, unsuitable for number cloning
O2 documents Sharer Plans as a way to share a lead device’s data allowance with up to nine other phones, tablets or SIMs. The arrangement can be useful for giving several devices internet access from one allowance, especially where the secondary devices do not need their own voice service.
There are two decisive limitations for this particular use case:

- Data sharing does not create one shared telephone number. A second iPhone would still have its own line or would need another calling solution.
- O2 says, “Our sharer plans will soon be discontinued, which means you’ll no longer be able to share data with other devices, or use someone else’s data.”
Treat O2 Sharer Plans as a legacy or transition option only. Check that new connections are still being accepted, whether existing customers can add a device, and the date on which sharing will end. Do not choose the plan on the assumption that it will provide Apple Handoff.

You want a second iPhone
Your only true target is Apple Handoff. Start with the carrier, not the handset. Obtain written or recorded confirmation that the exact tariff supports two iPhones, that an eSIM can be provisioned on the second phone, and that the service covers calls, voicemail and SMS. If the carrier cannot confirm all three points, budget for a separate line or use the second iPhone over Wi-Fi with internet calling apps instead; that will not be the same mobile-number experience.
You want an Apple Watch
Vodafone OneNumber is the documented UK option in this comparison. Buy the cellular watch version, confirm the tariff and current watch-generation support, then test service away from the phone before relying on it for safety or travel. A GPS-only watch cannot connect directly to the mobile network.
You want an iPad or cellular tablet
OneNumber can provide access to the phone plan’s data allowance on supported tablets. Vodafone says iPads cannot receive calls and texts through OneNumber, so plan to use internet-based calling and messaging when away from the iPhone. If you need ordinary cellular voice and SMS on the tablet, ask the carrier for a product that explicitly includes those functions rather than assuming a data add-on does.

A data-sharing plan is the relevant category, not number sharing. O2’s documented allowance of up to nine additional devices is substantial, but its discontinuation notice makes it a poor foundation for a new long-term setup. Verify replacement products and end dates before moving numbers or buying extra hardware.
What to check before signing up
- Exact device model: cellular and Wi-Fi editions can look identical. Record the model and regional version.
- Plan eligibility: companion services often exclude certain prepaid, business or legacy tariffs. Ask for the tariff name in writing.
- Functions included: distinguish calls, SMS, voicemail, iMessage, app messaging and data. A service may include one without the others.
- Primary-phone dependency: EE’s Smart Number terms require the primary iPhone to be switched on and covered for SMS. Ask whether the product you are considering has a similar requirement.
- Recurring charges: the £7.50 Vodafone figure is a starting price, not a universal quote. Confirm the fee, contract term, taxes and any activation charge.
- Cancellation: find out what happens to the companion eSIM and device when the primary plan is cancelled, changed or suspended.
- Network coverage: test the places where you expect to use the watch or tablet. A companion device cannot improve the underlying network signal.
Troubleshooting common failures
The second iPhone has no shared number
Check carrier participation first. Confirm that the second device received the intended eSIM and that both phones use the same Apple Account. If support staff keep referring to a watch or tablet product, you may have been sold a companion service that excludes iPhones.
The watch works near the phone but not outside
Verify that the watch is a cellular model, that a mobile plan is active on it and that cellular service is enabled in the watch settings. Move beyond Bluetooth range in an area with network coverage and test again. If it still fails, ask Vodafone to check the pairing record and eSIM activation.
The iPad has data but cannot make ordinary calls
This is expected under Vodafone’s stated OneNumber limitation for iPads. Use an internet-calling service or a separate voice-enabled line if calls are essential; do not treat the data connection as a cloned phone number.

A Sharer Plan cannot add another device
O2’s discontinuation notice may explain the failure. Ask whether your account is an existing grandfathered plan, the final date for adding devices and what replacement data-sharing products are available. Avoid committing to hardware until those answers are clear.
How to verify a carrier promise
- Ask the carrier to name the product and provide its current terms, not just “multi-SIM” or “number sharing.”
- State the two device types explicitly: two iPhones, an iPhone and Apple Watch, or an iPhone and iPad.
- Ask whether the secondary device receives calls, SMS, voicemail and data, and whether each function works when the primary phone is switched off.
- Request the supported iPhone models, iOS versions, eSIM requirements and tariff exclusions.
- Confirm the one-time and recurring charges and what happens if you change tariff or replace a device.
- Run a real-world test during the cancellation period: place and receive calls, send SMS, check voicemail and use data away from the primary device.
Bottom line for UK shoppers
For two iPhones, Apple iPhone Handoff is the relevant technology, but carrier participation is the deciding factor and no competing UK service is confirmed here. EE’s Smart Number terms exclude paired iPhones, so they do not solve that problem. For an untethered Apple Watch, Vodafone OneNumber is the clearest documented alternative, starting from £7.50 per month on an eligible plan and supporting cellular Apple Watch Series 3 and newer. For sharing internet access with multiple devices, O2 Sharer Plans allow up to nine additional devices on paper, but their announced discontinuation makes them a temporary path rather than a dependable new setup.
