For a different part of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s appeal, choose Sea of Stars for timed inputs, Persona 5 Royal for a stylish long-form adventure, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster for an emotional classic, or OCTOPATH TRAVELER II for strategic battles and a distinctive look. None is a sequel or an exact substitute; each follows a different thread of what made Expedition 33 compelling.
What to look for after Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 combines turn-based party combat with real-time actions: players can dodge, parry, counter, use rhythm-based attack combos, and free-aim certain attacks. Its Belle Époque France-inspired fantasy setting, character-specific builds, and story about Gustave, Maelle, and their fellow expeditioners confronting the Paintress’ cycle of death give it more than one point of comparison. Bandai Namco’s official game page lists its release as April 24, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

That mix makes “similar” a matter of preference. Decide whether you most want reactive inputs during turns, an authored visual identity, a character-focused story, tactical combat, or an approachable introduction to the genre. Most turn-based RPGs on this list do not reproduce Expedition 33’s dodge-and-parry system.

Metaphor: ReFantazio: closest overall fit
Choose Metaphor: ReFantazio if you want a contemporary party RPG that pairs strong visual style with turn-based combat. It is the closest overall recommendation for someone drawn to Expedition 33’s combination of striking presentation and party play, though it is a separate game rather than a continuation of its story or combat system. GameGeeker’s comparison identifies it as the nearest blend of painted art and party-based turns.

Persona 5 Royal: style and a substantial turn-based adventure
Pick Persona 5 Royal if you want a sharply stylized world and a lengthy, character-driven RPG experience built around turn-based battles. GamesRadar describes Royal as an expanded version of Persona 5, with quality-of-life and gameplay adjustments and additional characters. It is a good match for the appetite for style and scale, not for Expedition 33’s real-time defensive inputs.
Sea of Stars: timed hits and blocks
If the satisfying part of taking a turn is still having to react in the moment, try Sea of Stars. Its timed hits and blocks make attacks and defence more hands-on than standard menu-driven turns. The trade-off is tone and challenge: the comparison source characterizes it as warmer in tone and lighter in difficulty than Expedition 33. It shares the appeal of timed interaction, not the same mood or stakes.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster: an emotional classic
Choose Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster if you want a classic RPG with an emotionally weighty story, including a focus on mortality. Its turns are more traditional, and its pacing feels older than that of a contemporary release. The connection is strongest in its emotional subject matter and place in the lineage of story-led RPGs, rather than in matching Expedition 33’s combat.
OCTOPATH TRAVELER II: battle strategy and visual identity
OCTOPATH TRAVELER II is a strong choice if you want to think through turn order and resources while exploring a game with a recognizable art direction. Its Break and Boost systems give battles strategic timing and planning. Its anthology structure is a substantial difference from Expedition 33’s more unified expedition story, so choose it for its combat and presentation rather than expecting the same narrative shape.

For a welcoming fantasy adventure with companions and turn-based battles, consider Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition. GamesRadar characterizes it as an open-zone journey with approachable combat. It is a genre recommendation for someone who wants another substantial fantasy RPG, not a close tonal or mechanical match.

Why party play matters in Expedition 33
The appeal of its combat is not only that some actions require a quick response. Each character is meant to feel distinct, with different ways to build and play them. In an Xbox Wire interview, Guillaume Broche, CEO and Creative Director, said: “We didn’t want the game to just be a pretty face”, he told us. “We wanted it to be like a game that feels like a real game. So every character has their own playstyle and you can really play them in a lot of different ways – but they also feel very different from each other, and they all have their unique mechanics and their unique skill tree.”

That helps explain why a follow-up can feel right for different reasons. One player may want a similarly strong visual identity; another may care more about differentiated party members or the rhythm of reacting during combat. No single recommendation on this list promises all those qualities at once.
