Best Tools for Tracking Bitcoin Open Interest and Funding Rates

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with CoinGlass if you need a broad, multi-exchange futures dashboard and exchange-by-exchange comparisons. Choose Coinalyze for a Bitcoin-focused derivatives workspace and documented API, TradingView when derivatives indicators belong beside your price charts, CryptoQuant when you need on-chain and exchange-flow context, and Velo Data when live updates, exchange filtering and configurable funding views are the priority.

Open interest and funding rate are related but different measurements. Open interest shows the outstanding futures exposure, while funding is the periodic transfer between perpetual-futures longs and shorts. The most useful tool depends on whether you need breadth, chart integration, on-chain context, an API or very low-latency monitoring.

Quick comparison

Tool What it covers Freshness and calculation details Best use
CoinGlass Multi-exchange futures open interest, funding history, exchange lists, accumulated funding and funding-arbitrage views The exchange-list open-interest endpoint documents a 10-second cache/update frequency. Offers aggregated, open-interest-weighted and volume-weighted views. One dashboard for market-wide comparisons and exchange rankings
Coinalyze Bitcoin aggregate and per-exchange open interest, funding, liquidations, basis and contract charts Its BTC aggregate chart is not real-time; the Markets page is intended for real-time views. API documentation covers current, predicted and historical funding plus open-interest data. A focused BTC derivatives workspace or public-use API
TradingView Derivatives indicators alongside price charts Aggregated funding is open-interest weighted. Indicators are added through Supercharts at Indicators → Fundamentals → Derivatives. Keeping price, funding and open interest in one charting workflow
CryptoQuant BTC perpetual open interest and funding, liquidations, premium indices, exchange flows and other on-chain data Its API documentation lists more than 200 on-chain metrics across more than 490 assets. The Basic tier lists 10,000 credits per month, daily resolution and 30 days of history. Interpreting derivatives positioning with exchange and blockchain activity
Velo Data Configurable live charts with exchange filters, open interest and funding displays Chart updates can reach 10 times per second. Funding can be normalized to 1-hour, 8-hour, 24-hour or annual views; displayed funding may be updating or predicted. Active monitoring and custom, exchange-filtered layouts

No dashboard is an execution venue. Aggregators are monitoring layers, so confirm the funding rate, contract and settlement time on the exchange where a position will actually be opened or closed.

What Bitcoin open interest and funding rate actually measure

Open interest is outstanding futures exposure

Open interest (OI) is the amount of futures-position exposure that remains open at a venue or across a group of contracts. A rise means new exposure is being added or existing positions are being rolled into new contracts; a fall means positions are being closed, liquidated or otherwise removed. OI is not the same as trading volume: volume counts transactions during a period, while OI describes positions still outstanding.

An aggregate number combines several venues and contract types. That makes it useful for a market-wide view, but it also means the result depends on which exchanges and contracts are included, how coin-margined contracts are converted, and whether the provider weights data by open interest or volume.

Funding is a recurring transfer on perpetual futures

Perpetual futures do not expire, so exchanges use funding payments to keep their prices near spot. A positive rate generally means the perpetual contract trades above spot and longs pay shorts. A negative rate generally means shorts pay longs. The exact formula, cap, payment schedule and adjustment factors vary by venue, so two exchanges can show different rates for the same Bitcoin market.

A displayed rate must always be read with its interval. An 8-hour rate, a one-hour normalized rate and an annualized rate are different presentations of the same type of payment. Converting between them is only meaningful when the provider states the convention used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why aggregate funding can differ from an exchange quote

Aggregated funding is commonly open-interest weighted. A large venue therefore has more influence than a small venue. TradingView describes aggregated data as a broader-market view and non-aggregated data as more useful for short-term or exchange-specific analysis. A provider may also use a proprietary adjustment, include a different exchange set, or mix contract types. Compare like with like: the same interval, perpetual contract type, quote currency, weighting method and exchange set.

CoinGlass: the broadest first stop for cross-exchange monitoring

CoinGlass is the most practical starting point when the question is, “What is happening across Bitcoin futures venues right now?” Its documented futures endpoints cover open-interest history, aggregated OI history, exchange lists, funding-rate history, OI-weighted and volume-weighted funding, accumulated funding and funding-arbitrage data.

How to use CoinGlass for a BTC check

  1. Open the Bitcoin futures or derivatives view. Begin with aggregate OI to see whether total outstanding exposure is expanding or contracting.
  2. Switch to the exchange list. Inspect the venue-level OI distribution rather than assuming the aggregate is representative of every exchange. CoinGlass documents a 10-second cache/update frequency for this exchange-list endpoint.
  3. Choose the funding calculation deliberately. Use OI-weighted funding for a size-weighted market view and volume-weighted funding when recent trading activity is the intended emphasis. Do not treat either as the exact rate paid on every venue.
  4. Review funding history and accumulated funding. A single positive print can be brief; accumulated funding shows the direction of transfers over the selected period.
  5. Use the arbitrage view as a lead, not an order instruction. Differences between venues can disappear after fees, transfer delays, limits, margin requirements and settlement timing.
  6. Confirm execution details at the destination exchange. Check its current rate, payment timestamp, contract specification and mark-price rules before trading.

CoinGlass is strongest when breadth matters: exchange rankings, a market-wide heatmap-style overview and several aggregation choices in one place. Its aggregation is still a monitoring layer, so it cannot replace the venue’s own funding calculation for a live position.

Coinalyze: a focused Bitcoin derivatives workspace and API

Coinalyze concentrates on the metrics Bitcoin derivatives traders usually want together: aggregate and per-exchange OI, funding, liquidations, basis and contract charts. Its aggregate Bitcoin OI definition combines coin-margined and stablecoin-margined contracts after converting them to US dollars.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reading the Coinalyze Bitcoin page

  1. Start with the aggregate chart. Use it to compare OI and funding with the same time window, then switch to individual exchanges to locate divergences.
  2. Remember the USD conversion. A move in the displayed aggregate can reflect Bitcoin’s dollar price as well as a change in the number of contracts. For a contract-level question, inspect the venue and contract view.
  3. Use the Markets page for real-time monitoring. Coinalyze explicitly notes that its displayed aggregate chart is not updated in real time and directs users to Markets for real-time views.
  4. Add liquidations and basis to the same investigation. OI and funding describe positioning and the cost of holding a perpetual; liquidations show forced position closures, while basis helps distinguish dated-futures pricing from perpetual funding.

Coinalyze API access

The API documentation exposes current, predicted and historical funding-rate endpoints as well as open-interest data. It states that the API is free for public uses when the source is cited. That makes Coinalyze a useful choice for a public dashboard, research notebook or alerting script that needs both present and historical values. Treat “predicted” funding as an estimate, not a payment that has already occurred, and keep the interval and exchange selection in your stored data.

TradingView: put derivatives beside the price chart

TradingView is the natural choice when your analysis already lives in Supercharts and you want price action, open interest and funding in one workspace. It is less about being a dedicated cross-exchange control panel and more about contextual chart analysis.

Adding funding and open-interest indicators

  1. Open a Bitcoin perpetual or futures symbol in Supercharts. Check the symbol description so you know which venue or aggregate it represents.
  2. Select Indicators → Fundamentals → Derivatives. Add the available funding-rate and open-interest studies.
  3. Determine whether the study is aggregated. Aggregated funding is open-interest weighted; a venue-specific symbol is better for a short-term decision tied to that venue.
  4. Align the chart interval with the funding schedule. A rate displayed per payment interval should not be compared directly with an annualized or differently normalized series.
  5. Compare the indicator with price and volume. The chart layout is useful for seeing whether a move in price occurred while OI expanded, contracted or stayed flat.

TradingView’s sign convention follows the usual interpretation: positive funding means perpetuals trade above spot and longs pay shorts. Exchange formulas can differ, so read the selected symbol’s description and verify the venue’s documentation before treating the chart value as a payable amount.

CryptoQuant: combine derivatives with on-chain and exchange-flow context

CryptoQuant is the strongest fit when OI and funding are only part of the question. Its Data API includes price, OHLCV, funding rates, open interest, liquidations and premium indices, alongside more than 200 on-chain metrics across more than 490 assets. Its Bitcoin market-data documentation includes an OI endpoint for BTC perpetuals across derivative exchanges and a funding-rates endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical CryptoQuant investigation

  1. Pull BTC perpetual OI and funding. Establish whether leverage and the cost of holding it are rising or falling.
  2. Add liquidation and premium-index data. This helps distinguish orderly positioning from a move accompanied by forced closures or an unusual premium.
  3. Layer in exchange reserves and flows. Exchange balances and transfers can provide context for whether derivatives activity coincides with coins moving toward or away from trading venues.
  4. Keep time resolution consistent. A daily on-chain series should not be treated as if it explains every intraday funding change.

API limits to plan around

CryptoQuant’s current API documentation lists a Basic free tier with 10,000 credits per month, daily resolution and 30 days of history. Those limits are sufficient for a small daily monitor but can be restrictive for high-frequency polling or long backfills. Plans and limits can change, so check the current documentation before building a production collector.

Velo Data: live charts and configurable exchange filters

Velo Data is aimed at users who want a configurable screen rather than a fixed summary. Its chart documentation describes live updates of up to 10 times per second, exchange filtering, open interest in either dollar or coin terms, and funding normalized to 1-hour, 8-hour, 24-hour or annual views.

Using Velo without misreading the numbers

  1. Filter to the exchanges you actually trade or monitor. Removing venues changes the aggregate, so save the filter set with your notes.
  2. Select the OI unit. Dollar OI is easier to compare with account exposure; coin OI shows the underlying contract quantity. They answer different questions.
  3. Choose a funding normalization. Select 1-hour, 8-hour, 24-hour or annual only after deciding which payment convention you need.
  4. Check whether the displayed rate is updating or predicted. Velo notes that its funding display can represent the updating or predicted rate rather than only the last completed payment interval.
  5. Use funding spend for position sizing context. Velo defines funding spend as funding rate multiplied by open interest. The result is a measure of aggregate transfer exposure, not a guarantee of the amount any individual account pays.

Velo’s speed and configurability suit active monitoring, but those same options make consistency important. Record the exchange filter, OI unit, funding normalization and whether the rate was updating or predicted whenever you save a reading.

Which tool fits your objective?

Choose CoinGlass for market breadth

Pick CoinGlass when you need to scan many venues, compare exchange-level OI, inspect multiple funding-weighting methods or look for cross-exchange differences. It is the most efficient first screen for a market-wide question.

Choose Coinalyze for Bitcoin-specific depth and public APIs

Choose Coinalyze when Bitcoin derivatives are the center of the workflow and you want OI, funding, liquidations and basis together. Its documented current, predicted and historical endpoints are particularly useful for public data projects.

Choose TradingView for chart-native analysis

Use TradingView when changing tools would interrupt your price-analysis process. It is best when the key decision comes from the relationship between price, OI and funding on the same chart.

Choose CryptoQuant for a derivatives-plus-on-chain question

CryptoQuant is the better fit when you are asking whether leverage changes coincide with exchange flows, reserves, premium changes or other blockchain activity. The free Basic allocation favors modest, daily-resolution monitoring rather than dense intraday polling.

Choose Velo Data for live, customized screens

Velo Data fits traders who need rapid chart updates, selective exchange inclusion and explicit control over units and funding normalization. It demands careful labeling because a predicted or normalized rate is not automatically the same as a venue’s last payment.

How to compare readings without creating false signals

Match the contract type

Compare perpetual with perpetual and dated futures with dated futures. Mixing them can make funding appear inconsistent because dated contracts express their carry through basis rather than recurring perpetual payments.

Match the quote and unit

Coin-margined and stablecoin-margined contracts can be converted into a common dollar value, but the conversion method matters. If one screen shows coin OI and another shows dollar OI, a price move alone can create an apparent difference.

Match the time interval

Store the interval next to every funding value. Do not compare an 8-hour venue quote with a 1-hour normalized chart or an annualized display without converting them under the same convention.

Match the exchange universe and weighting

An aggregate based on five large venues will not equal one based on every available venue. OI-weighted and volume-weighted averages intentionally produce different results. Record the exchange set and weighting when comparing tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for data latency

A fast-updating screen can show a developing or predicted rate, while a historical chart may lag. Coinalyze labels its aggregate BTC chart as not real-time; CoinGlass documents a 10-second cache for its exchange-list endpoint; Velo documents updates up to 10 times per second. These are properties of particular views, not promises that every metric on the platform updates at that speed.

Reading common OI-and-funding combinations

Price up, OI up, funding positive

New futures exposure is building while longs are paying shorts. This often signals crowded bullish positioning and a rising carry cost. It does not prove that a reversal is imminent; use the exchange breakdown and liquidation data to judge how concentrated the exposure is.

Price up, OI down

A rally with falling OI can reflect short covering or position closure rather than a fresh wave of leverage. Funding may remain positive briefly even as exposure is removed, so inspect the sequence rather than one candle.

Price down, OI up, funding negative

Fresh short exposure is being added while shorts pay longs. The negative payment is evidence of positioning pressure, not a timing signal that the decline must end.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Price down, OI down

Deleveraging, liquidations or ordinary position exits may be driving the move. Compare liquidation data and venue-level OI before attributing the change to one side of the market.

Large funding dispersion between exchanges

A wide spread can arise from local order-book imbalance, different formulas, contract specifications or a temporary data-timing difference. It may be a monitoring lead, but execution requires checking fees, transfer time, margin rules, withdrawal constraints and the exact payment schedule on both venues.

Building a reliable monitoring routine

  1. Choose one primary dashboard. Use CoinGlass for breadth, Coinalyze for BTC derivatives, TradingView for chart context, CryptoQuant for on-chain context or Velo for live customization.
  2. Write down the definitions. Record whether OI is aggregate or venue-specific, dollar or coin-denominated, and whether funding is weighted, normalized or predicted.
  3. Cross-check an important reading. Compare the aggregate with at least one venue-level view and, before trading, the destination exchange’s own quote.
  4. Capture the timestamp and interval. A screenshot without these fields is difficult to audit later.
  5. Separate observation from action. OI and funding describe exposure and carrying cost; they do not provide an entry, exit or liquidation guarantee.

API and automation considerations

For a lightweight public data project, Coinalyze’s documented API is the clearest starting point because it offers current, predicted and historical funding and OI data and states that public use is free when the source is cited. CoinGlass is useful when an automated collector needs exchange lists, aggregate OI, funding histories, weighted funding, accumulated funding or arbitrage-related endpoints. CryptoQuant is the choice when the same pipeline must fetch derivatives and on-chain series, but its Basic allocation of 10,000 monthly credits, daily resolution and 30-day history sets a practical ceiling on free-tier polling. Velo’s live chart behavior is valuable for a human monitoring screen; an automated system should still store the exact normalization and whether a value was updating or predicted.

Design the data model so every record includes the venue or exchange set, contract type, quote currency, OI unit, funding interval, weighting method, timestamp and status such as settled, updating or predicted. Without those fields, two numerically similar values can represent different exposures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Treating aggregate funding as a guaranteed payment. Fix: check the destination exchange’s formula and settlement time.
  • Mixing intervals. Fix: convert or compare only rates expressed on the same basis.
  • Ignoring contract type. Fix: keep perpetual, dated, coin-margined and stablecoin-margined series separate until the provider documents a valid conversion.
  • Assuming a chart is real-time. Fix: use the provider’s real-time view where documented and record the timestamp.
  • Reading OI without price or liquidations. Fix: inspect the joint move in price, OI, funding and liquidation data.
  • Using a predicted rate as a settled rate. Fix: label predicted and updating values and replace them with the final payment only after settlement.
  • Assuming a free tier supports high-frequency history. Fix: check credits, resolution and retention before scheduling a collector; CryptoQuant’s documented Basic limits are 10,000 credits monthly, daily resolution and 30 days of history.
  • Turning an arbitrage spread into an automatic trade. Fix: calculate fees, slippage, margin, transfer and settlement risks and verify both venues independently.

Bottom line

For most readers, CoinGlass is the best first tool because it makes cross-exchange OI and funding comparisons easy. Coinalyze is the stronger focused alternative for Bitcoin derivatives and API work. TradingView wins when chart integration matters, CryptoQuant when on-chain context changes the interpretation, and Velo Data when live, configurable monitoring is worth the extra care over units and normalization. Whichever tool you use, treat the displayed figures as defined measurements—not universal constants—and confirm trade-specific funding at the exchange that will settle it.
