Microsoft SwiftKey is the clearest third-party starting point if you want word-tracing swipe typing on both iPhone and Android. Microsoft documents swipe typing on both platforms, but the available evidence does not establish a universal speed or accuracy winner. iPhone users should test Apple’s built-in QuickPath first. Typewise is worth considering for its hexagonal layout and editing gestures, not for conventional swipe-to-type: its documented gestures act on capitalization, deletion and text restoration rather than tracing a word across keys.
Which keyboard should you try first?
Use the input method as your first filter. If you mean the familiar gesture in which your finger travels from letter to letter and the keyboard predicts the completed word, Microsoft SwiftKey is the documented third-party option that works on both major mobile platforms. That establishes feature availability, not a head-to-head performance victory.

Because no current independent comparison supplies a controlled speed or accuracy result, treat “best” as a fit decision. Your language, names, slang, punctuation habits and tolerance for corrections matter more than a generic ranking.

What swipe typing actually means
Swipe typing, also called glide or gesture typing, lets you keep a finger on the keyboard while moving across successive letters. The keyboard interprets the path, predicts the intended word and inserts it when you lift your finger. You normally do not need to hit each key separately.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
That definition excludes several features that can look similar in screenshots:
- Gesture editing: swiping may capitalize, delete or restore text without selecting individual buttons.
- Cursor control: dragging across the space bar or another area can move the insertion point, but it does not compose a word.
- Autocorrection: correcting a mistyped word after individual taps is not swipe input.
Always verify that an app supports word tracing in the language and layout you intend to use. A keyboard can advertise gestures while using them for editing rather than composition.
Microsoft SwiftKey: the practical cross-platform choice
What is documented
Microsoft’s product material describes swipe typing for SwiftKey on iPhone and Android and illustrates use on both platforms. That makes it the most direct match for someone who wants one third-party keyboard across devices. The documentation establishes that the feature exists; it does not prove that SwiftKey is faster or more accurate for every person.
Language support differs by platform
Microsoft’s current support figures are platform-specific. For Android, Microsoft describes more than 700 languages and up to five enabled at the same time. Its iOS setup material describes more than 500 languages and up to two active languages. These are vendor-published counts accessed in 2026, not an independent census, and both the totals and individual language availability can change.

Check the in-app language list before switching. Confirm the exact script, regional variant and keyboard layout you need, then check how many languages can remain active simultaneously on your device. A language being listed does not necessarily mean every layout or prediction feature behaves identically across iOS and Android.
Optional account and cloud features
Microsoft describes a free, opt-in Microsoft SwiftKey Account. According to its support information, account features can use cloud capabilities for personalized predictions and can back up and synchronize learned language data. Those features are optional. Review the current account, backup and synchronization settings during setup and leave them disabled if you do not want those cloud functions.
This description should not be read as an independent privacy audit. It explains Microsoft’s stated product options, not a third-party verification of implementation or an all-purpose judgment about data handling.

Install and enable SwiftKey on Android
- Install Microsoft SwiftKey from your Android app store.
- Open SwiftKey and complete the guided setup, including selecting languages and a keyboard layout.
- When Android presents the available-keyboard screen, enable SwiftKey and select it as the current input method. The exact wording can vary by Android manufacturer.
- Open SwiftKey’s language settings and enable the languages you want to use together, staying within the stated limit of up to five active languages.
- Open any text field, bring up the keyboard and trace a word continuously across its letters. Lift your finger between words so the keyboard can insert a space.
Android system menus differ among manufacturers and software versions. If you cannot find the keyboard switcher, search Settings for On-screen keyboard, Virtual keyboard or Default keyboard.
Apple QuickPath: the iPhone baseline before installing anything
Apple lists QuickPath among the features of its QuickType Keyboard. It is therefore the sensible first test for an iPhone owner who wants swipe typing but does not specifically need a third-party keyboard.
How to try it
- Open any app with a text field, such as Messages or Notes.
- Keep one finger on the first letter of a word and slide through the remaining letters without lifting.
- Lift your finger at the end of the word; QuickPath should insert the predicted word and a space.
- If the wrong word appears, tap it in the suggestion area when an alternative is offered, or delete it and try a slower path.
QuickPath is a built-in feature, so it avoids adding another keyboard to the system. Apple’s feature page documents availability, not relative quality. Compare it with SwiftKey using the same sentences and language rather than assuming one is universally superior.

What Typewise does
Typewise presents a hexagonal keyboard layout and describes larger keys in its listing. Its offline edition documents gestures that swipe upward to capitalize, left to delete and right to restore text. Those actions can make editing feel different from a conventional rectangular keyboard.

Why it should not be counted as a swipe-to-type keyboard
Typewise’s documented 2022 keyboard roadmap explicitly distinguishes its gestures from word-tracing input and says: “If you want swipe typing use another keyboard.” That is the company’s stated position in that roadmap, not a permanent guarantee about every later release. Check the current app listing if this distinction is decisive for you. On the evidence available here, Typewise belongs in a comparison of alternative layouts and editing methods, not in a shortlist of conventional swipe keyboards.
Privacy statements and their limits
Typewise says its autocorrection and prediction run on-device and that it does not collect keyboard input. It also says it collects limited anonymous usage data from certain in-app areas, including tutorials, settings and typing-game activity. These are Typewise’s own statements; they have not been independently audited for this comparison. Review the current privacy page and the permissions shown by your operating system before installation.

Choose by your actual priority
You need one keyboard on iPhone and Android
Start with SwiftKey because swipe typing is documented on both platforms. Install it on the device you use most, then repeat the same short test on the other device. Keep the languages and layout consistent so you are comparing the keyboard rather than different system settings.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You are on iPhone and want the fewest changes
Try QuickPath first. It is already part of QuickType, so you can evaluate swipe typing without granting another keyboard access or learning a new layout. Move to SwiftKey only if its language handling, predictions or cross-platform continuity better fit your needs.
Best Value
You dislike rectangular keys or edit frequently with gestures
Typewise may be worth a separate trial for its hexagonal design and documented editing gestures. Do not install it expecting your finger to trace a word across letters; that is precisely the function its cited roadmap tells swipe-typing users to seek elsewhere.
You switch between several languages
Compare the platform limits before choosing. SwiftKey’s stated Android allowance is up to five active languages, while its iOS material states up to two. Verify the exact languages and regional layouts in the app, because headline totals do not guarantee support for your particular combination.
You are cautious about cloud personalization
Read each keyboard’s current settings rather than relying on a generic privacy label. SwiftKey’s account-based cloud personalization and learned-language backup are described as optional. Typewise describes on-device prediction and no keyboard-input collection, while also acknowledging anonymous data from parts of the app. Neither statement is an independent audit.
A fair personal test for speed and accuracy
No current independent test in the available material identifies a universal champion. You can still make a useful decision with a repeatable home test:
- Prepare the same 100-to-150-word passage containing ordinary words, punctuation, numbers, names and the slang you commonly use.
- Use the same phone, text app, language settings and autocorrection conditions for each keyboard.
- Type once with individual taps and once with swipe input, without deliberately slowing down either method.
- Record completion time, the number of corrections and words that required replacing from the suggestion strip.
- Repeat the exercise on at least three occasions. A single session can be distorted by unfamiliarity with a layout or by recently learned words.
- Test real messages separately from the prepared passage. Contact names, technical terms and mixed-language sentences often reveal problems that a neutral paragraph hides.
Use the result to choose the keyboard that reduces your corrections and friction. Do not turn a personal trial into a claim that the app is objectively fastest or most accurate for everyone.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
The keyboard does not appear on iPhone
- Return to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and confirm that the keyboard was added.
- In a text field, touch and hold the globe or keyboard key and select the intended keyboard.
- If it still fails, remove the keyboard from the same list, restart the phone and add it again.
- Check whether an app-specific text field restricts third-party keyboards; test in Notes or Messages.
Android keeps switching back
- Open the system’s On-screen keyboard, Virtual keyboard or Default keyboard settings and select SwiftKey again.
- Confirm that the keyboard remains enabled after a system update or device-management policy.
- Use the keyboard switcher icon while a text field is open to verify which input method is active.
Swipe words are consistently wrong
- Confirm that the intended language and regional layout are enabled.
- Trace the word in one continuous motion and lift between words.
- Try slower, more deliberate paths for names and uncommon terms, then add corrections through the keyboard’s learning controls if available.
- Compare the same sentence with QuickPath or another keyboard. If only one keyboard struggles, the issue may be its language model rather than your technique.
You expected Typewise to trace words
That expectation conflicts with the cited Typewise roadmap. Its documented swipes are for editing actions, not conventional word composition. Choose SwiftKey or QuickPath for the word-tracing method described in this guide.
Bottom line
For a third-party keyboard with documented swipe typing on both iPhone and Android, begin with Microsoft SwiftKey and verify your languages in the app. On iPhone, test QuickPath before installing anything. Consider Typewise only when its hexagonal layout and editing gestures are more important to you than tracing words across keys. Since the available sources do not provide an independent performance ranking, make the final choice with your own language, names and everyday messages.
