A migration-related traffic drop is fixed by first identifying what changed, then tracing the loss from crawling to indexing to ranking. If URLs changed, audit the old-to-new map, permanent redirects, crawl barriers, canonicals, sitemaps and internal links. If URLs did not change and only hosting or DNS changed, skip redirect work and investigate availability, status codes, crawl capacity and server logs instead. Google allows temporary fluctuation while it recrawls and reindexes moved URLs, but a severe or persistent decline warrants a technical and search-demand investigation rather than a promise that it will resolve on its own.
Classify the migration before changing anything
Record the launch date, the old and new properties, and the exact scope of the change. “Migration” can describe several technically different events, and each has a different failure pattern.

| Migration type | Did the visible URL change? | Primary work | Search Console Change of Address | Main diagnostic focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Domain change | Yes | Map every important old URL to its closest new equivalent, implement and test permanent redirects, update canonicals, links and sitemaps | Use it when moving between domains | URL mapping, redirects and property-level signals |
| Hostname or subdomain change | Yes | Redirect old host URLs, update references and submit the new sitemap | Applicable when the move is between domains or properties covered by the tool | Host-wide redirect coverage and discovery |
| HTTP to HTTPS | Yes | Redirect HTTP URLs, make HTTPS canonical, update links and sitemap | Not required | Protocol redirects, mixed references and certificate availability |
| Path or URL-structure change on the same domain | Yes | Build a page-level map and redirect each old path to the matching new path | Not required | Mapping accuracy, redirect chains and internal links |
| Hosting, DNS or CDN move with unchanged URLs | No | Verify DNS, TLS, uptime, response codes, crawl capacity and logs | Not applicable | Infrastructure and Googlebot access, not redirects |
| Combined move | Usually yes | Treat it as a URL migration and an infrastructure change; validate both independently | Use where applicable for the domain move | Redirect integrity plus server reliability |
Google maintains separate guidance for URL-changing moves and hosting changes. A hosting-only move should not be diagnosed as a redirect migration simply because rankings fell on the same day.

Do not begin by changing page copy or rebuilding links. First establish what changed in the data and which layer is affected.

Compare the right periods in Search Console
- Open Search Console > Performance > Search results.
- Compare the migration period with a comparable prior period. Use a long enough window to include normal weekly and seasonal patterns; Google recommends viewing up to 16 months of performance data for context.
- Break the comparison down by pages, queries, countries, devices and search type.
- Open Search Console > Indexing > Pages and Crawl stats to look for new exclusion, error or crawl-request patterns.
- Use URL Inspection on representative winners, losers and newly migrated URLs. Inspect both the live URL and the indexed status.
If clicks declined while impressions stayed broadly similar, investigate titles, snippets, rich-result eligibility and changes in search-result features. If impressions and clicks both declined, investigate indexing, ranking, technical access and search demand. A site-wide decline that also appears for unrelated pages may indicate an algorithm update, outage, security problem or demand change rather than a single redirect error.
Use server logs to connect Googlebot activity to what users saw
In access logs, filter Googlebot requests around launch and compare them with the previous period. Check requested URLs, response status, response time, user-agent handling, redirects and the final destination. Logs can reveal a pattern that a sample of inspected URLs misses, such as intermittent 5xx responses, a firewall challenge or Googlebot repeatedly requesting obsolete paths.
Build and test an old-to-new URL map
For a URL-changing move, the map is the central control document. Include every valuable indexable URL, not only the home page and a few top articles. Export old URLs from the previous sitemap, analytics, Search Console and your crawl data, then assign each one the closest useful new URL.

Map by intent, not by convenience
An old product, article or category should redirect to the equivalent new page that serves the same intent. Do not send a large collection of unrelated URLs to the home page merely to produce a 200 response. When no genuine replacement exists, return an appropriate 404 or 410 rather than creating a misleading soft landing page.

Use one direct permanent redirect
Test representative high-value URLs first, then crawl the full mapping when the site is large. A correct redirect should lead directly from the old URL to the final new URL with a permanent status such as 301 or an equivalent permanent redirect. Check for:
- Redirect loops.
- Chains in which an old URL passes through multiple intermediate URLs.
- Redirects to the wrong language, category or page type.
- Redirects that end at a nonexistent URL or an unexpected status.
- Query-string, trailing-slash, case and encoded-character variants that behave differently.
- HTTP and HTTPS or www and non-www versions that do not converge on one final URL.
Link directly to the final destination instead of making Google follow a chain. Google Search Central’s Site Moves and Migrations documentation states: “301 and other permanent redirects don’t cause a loss in PageRank.” That statement means a properly implemented permanent redirect is not, by itself, a PageRank-loss mechanism. It does not guarantee unchanged traffic when the destination content, canonical signals, crawl access, demand or rankings have changed.
Verify what the server actually returns
Check redirect behavior with a browser, a header request and the server logs. For example, a command-line check can show each hop:
curl -I -L https://old.example.com/old-path
Replace the example with your own URL. Confirm that the final response is the intended page, not a login screen, error document or redirect back to the old URL. Also verify that the new host can serve the page without requiring cookies or a JavaScript challenge that blocks crawlers.

Remove accidental crawl and index barriers
Launch restrictions are a common migration-only failure. Compare the new production templates and headers with the old site, not just the visible page.
- robots.txt: remove staging rules that disallow important directories or the entire site. A robots.txt block can prevent crawling and can also prevent Google from seeing page-level directives.
- Meta robots: check that indexable pages do not carry
noindex, nofollowor an unintended directive inherited from a staging template. - X-Robots-Tag: inspect HTTP headers for a server-level
noindexor other restrictive value, including on PDFs and other non-HTML files. - HTTP status: confirm that intended pages return the expected success response and that assets needed to render the page are available.
- Access controls: remove password gates, IP allowlists, bot challenges and maintenance rules that remain active on the public host.
Inspect affected URLs in Search Console after correcting a barrier. “Crawled” is not the same as “indexed”: Google can fetch a page and still decide not to include it. Conversely, a URL that cannot be crawled cannot reliably be evaluated for indexing.
Make canonical signals agree
Choose one preferred URL for each page and express that choice consistently. The strongest practical alignment is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- The old URL permanently redirects to the new URL.
- The new page’s
rel="canonical"names the new URL. - Internal links point directly to the new URL.
- The XML sitemap lists the new URL and omits retired URLs.
- Alternate-language annotations, structured data, pagination and image links use the correct host and protocol.
Google describes redirects and rel="canonical" as strong canonical signals, while sitemap inclusion is a weaker signal. A sitemap helps discovery and consolidation but does not guarantee crawling, indexing or ranking. Do not use robots.txt as a canonicalization method, and do not use noindex to choose a canonical page; those controls solve different problems.

Find conflicts that keep old URLs selected
Common conflicts include a new page whose canonical still points to the old host, an internal link that keeps generating HTTP URLs, or a sitemap containing both old and new variants. Resolve the conflict at the source template or CMS rather than editing isolated pages. Then inspect a sample from each template type and language.
Update sitemaps, internal links and Search Console properties
- Generate a sitemap containing the final, preferred new URLs only.
- Submit it in the new Search Console property and remove obsolete URLs from that sitemap.
- Update navigation, breadcrumbs, related-content modules, hreflang references and structured-data URLs so they link directly to the new locations.
- Keep the old property verified so you can observe declining old-URL indexing and crawl activity.
- For a domain or subdomain move, use Search Console’s Change of Address tool where it applies. Google says it is not needed for HTTP-to-HTTPS, www/non-www changes or path changes on the same domain.
- Ask important external sites to update links when practical, especially links to pages that have no close replacement.
Submitting a sitemap is a discovery and canonicalization signal, not a request that Google index every listed URL immediately. Use URL Inspection for a small number of priority pages, not as a substitute for fixing site-wide signals.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If URLs did not change, investigate the hosting move
When the address in the browser stayed the same, a redirect audit cannot explain the decline. Focus on whether Google and users could reach the same URLs consistently before and after the cutover.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check DNS records, propagation, nameservers and whether different regions resolve to different hosts.
- Verify TLS certificates, certificate chains, supported protocols and expiration dates.
- Review uptime and latency at the times Googlebot requested the site.
- Look for bursts of 429, 500, 502, 503 and 504 responses, connection resets and timeouts.
- Confirm that the new firewall, CDN or WAF does not challenge or throttle legitimate crawlers.
- Ensure the server can handle increased crawl activity; Google may crawl the new site more heavily during a move.
- Compare cache rules and compression settings so the server is not intermittently failing on large HTML or asset responses.
Use logs, synthetic monitoring and URL Inspection together. A page that loads in your browser once is not proof that it was consistently available to Googlebot during the migration.
Best Value
Check for problems unrelated to the migration
Timing alone does not establish causation. Review these alternatives before making a second major site change:
- Algorithm update: compare the start of the decline with Google’s documented update period and examine whether similar page types changed together.
- Security issue or manual action: check the Security issues and Manual actions sections in Search Console.
- Removed content or policy changes: confirm that important pages, categories and media were not deleted, merged or made private during the launch.
- Seasonality: compare with the same period in a prior year when demand is cyclical.
- Query-demand change: impressions can fall because fewer people searched, even when technical signals are healthy.
- Search-result changes: new features, answer panels, local packs or competitors can change clicks without an equivalent indexing failure.
- Analytics configuration: verify that the new templates still load the analytics tag, preserve consent behavior and record the correct host and page views.
When moving to a previously used domain, check Search Console for manual actions, security issues and removed-URL settings that may predate your launch.
Tell a normal transition from a technical failure
| Pattern | More consistent with | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Old URLs decline while new URLs gradually gain indexed pages and impressions | Normal recrawling and reindexing | Keep redirects, canonicals and sitemap signals stable; monitor by URL group |
| Both old and new URLs are excluded, with robots or noindex reasons | Launch barrier | Inspect robots.txt, meta robots and X-Robots-Tag |
| New URLs return 4xx/5xx or redirect to unrelated pages | Mapping or server failure | Test responses at scale and inspect logs |
| Impressions remain similar but clicks fall | Snippet, title, result-feature or demand issue | Compare queries, average position and search-result appearance |
| Sharp decline across old and new URLs immediately after a host cutover | Availability, DNS, TLS or capacity problem | Review uptime, DNS resolution, response codes and Googlebot requests |
| Decline begins outside the launch window and affects unrelated sites or topics | Algorithm, demand or broader search change | Check update timing, seasonality and query-level trends |
How long can recovery take?
There is no guaranteed crawl, indexing, ranking or recovery schedule. Google says a medium-sized site may take a few weeks for moved URLs to be noticed, while larger sites can take longer. That is an observation about the recrawling process, not an average recovery time or a promise that traffic will return.
During a healthy transition, old-URL indexing and traffic generally trend down as new-URL indexing and traffic trend up, but each URL is processed on its own schedule. Keep the redirect map and canonical signals unchanged long enough for Google to process them. Investigate immediately when important URLs remain blocked, return errors, point to the wrong destination or show no crawl activity; do not wait several weeks to correct a known defect.
Avoid radical redesigns, mass deletions or repeated URL changes based only on a small position fluctuation. Stabilize the technical signals, document each change and compare page groups over time.
Quick Recap
A practical recovery checklist
- Classify the move and record the launch date.
- Compare clicks, impressions, queries and pages with an appropriate prior period.
- Check Page indexing, Crawl stats, URL Inspection and server logs together.
- For changed URLs, complete and test the old-to-new map.
- Replace chains and loops with one direct permanent redirect to the closest equivalent.
- Remove staging robots, noindex and X-Robots-Tag restrictions.
- Align redirects, canonicals, internal links and sitemap URLs.
- Submit the new sitemap and keep old and new Search Console properties verified.
- Use Change of Address only for applicable domain or property moves.
- For hosting-only moves, verify DNS, TLS, uptime, response codes, capacity and bot handling.
- Check manual actions, security issues, seasonality, demand and search-result changes.
- Monitor old and new URL groups without promising a fixed recovery date.
