Best Technology Grants for Nonprofits Beyond Google.org

For most nonprofits, the strongest alternatives to Google.org are Microsoft Nonprofits, AWS nonprofit programs, and Cisco’s technology and cash-grant routes. They do not fund the same things: Microsoft is strongest for recurring productivity, identity, security and cloud infrastructure; AWS fits defined cloud or application projects; and Cisco can provide networking technology or cash for technology-enabled social programs. TechSoup is a practical access and distribution partner rather than a universal grantmaker.

Choose the program by the resource you actually need—cloud credits, donated or discounted software, hardware and services, or unrestricted-looking cash for a specific program. Eligibility, geography, award size, deadlines and restrictions change, so verify the live rules before investing time in an application.

What kind of technology support does your nonprofit need?

“Technology grant” can mean several different forms of support. A cloud-credit award may cover computing and storage but not staff time. Donated networking equipment can solve a connectivity problem but still require installation, maintenance and security expertise. A cash grant may pay for a technology-enabled service, yet exclude ordinary overhead. Classifying the need first prevents a technically eligible organization from applying to the wrong program.

  • Recurring digital infrastructure: email, collaboration, identity management, endpoint administration, security controls, business applications or an Azure workload.
  • A defined cloud project: migration, application modernization, data engineering, artificial intelligence, a digital service or another build with milestones and a delivery plan.
  • Physical and network technology: switches, wireless access, security tools, software and related services for a nonprofit or community program.
  • Program cash: funding for a measurable social intervention in which technology improves reach, efficiency or outcomes.
  • Implementation access: donated or discounted products, training and capacity-building obtained through a distribution partner.

Document your beneficiaries, geography, legal status, current systems, project owner, budget and measurable outcomes before comparing applications. The same project may qualify for more than one route, but awards can have different rules about procurement, overhead, security and use.

AWS nonprofit promotional credits Cloud credits, with AWS describing up to $5,000 USD annually for nonprofits worldwide Worldwide description, subject to current terms Operating or project workloads hosted on AWS Credits are not general cash and normally apply to eligible cloud usage under the live terms
Cisco Technology Grant Program Donated hardware, software and services Qualifying nonprofits under Cisco’s current criteria Networking, security, productivity, scalability and cost-efficiency improvements Equipment still needs deployment, administration, lifecycle planning and security controls
Cisco Global Impact Cash Grants Cash grants for programs addressing significant social problems Nonprofits and NGOs meeting program criteria Technology-enabled programs where technology improves reach or efficiency Exclusions include general operating expenses except when directly tied to the program, individuals, research programs and certain narrowly defined population or viewpoint programs

Microsoft Nonprofits: best for core systems and recurring technology

Microsoft’s nonprofit offer combines free technology grants and custom-built solutions with discounts across cloud, productivity, business applications, Windows and security. For an organization trying to standardize how staff communicate, sign in, work from endpoints and protect data, this is often more useful than a one-time project award.

What the support can cover

The portfolio spans Azure, Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, Power Platform, Windows and related products. A nonprofit might use it to consolidate email and collaboration, implement centralized identity, manage laptops, improve security monitoring, automate a process or host an application. The exact products, quantities and discount levels depend on country, validation status and the current offer page.

Eligibility and validation

Microsoft publishes mission and organizational criteria and requires nonprofit validation. Rules can differ by country and can change, so confirm the current eligibility page immediately before applying. Prepare legal-registration evidence, the organization’s mission statement, contact details for an authorized representative and a clear explanation of how the products will serve the nonprofit rather than a commercial affiliate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 85% utilization obligation

Microsoft’s nonprofit FAQ says organizations must meet an 85% utilization requirement for granted software. Falling below that level can put future grants at risk. Treat the grant as an operating commitment: assign an administrator, create accounts in phases, remove unused licenses, train staff and review utilization before renewal or revalidation. Do not request a larger allocation simply because it is available.

When Microsoft is the right first application

  • Your immediate problem is fragmented email, files, meetings or identity.
  • You need endpoint management, security and access controls for a distributed workforce.
  • Your technical team already works with Microsoft products and can administer the environment.
  • You need predictable recurring software support rather than a single project budget.

Microsoft support is generally in-kind technology or a discount, not unrestricted cash. Budget separately for migration, configuration, backup, staff time, accessibility work and ongoing administration.

AWS Imagine Grant and nonprofit credits: best for cloud-centered projects

AWS describes a portfolio that combines grants, cloud credits, training and mission-technology resources. It has two distinct paths: the competitive AWS Imagine Grant and promotional credits for nonprofit cloud use. Keeping those paths separate matters because a cash-like grant application and a credit request are evaluated differently.

AWS Imagine Grant

The Imagine Grant is described as an opportunity for registered U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofits using technology to address major challenges. A strong application connects a specific social problem to a technical intervention, identifies who will use the service, explains the implementation architecture and sets measurable outcomes. “We need cloud” is weaker than a staged plan showing data sources, security controls, delivery milestones, operating ownership and how the project will improve a beneficiary-facing result.

AWS-associated material has shown an award figure of up to $150,000 USD, but the applicable category, cycle and amount must be confirmed on the live program page before being quoted in a budget. AWS promotional credits

AWS describes promotional credits of up to $5,000 USD annually for nonprofits worldwide, subject to current terms. Credits reduce eligible AWS charges; they are not a cheque for salaries, rent or unrestricted operations. Confirm which services qualify, the expiration date, account structure, billing requirements and whether credits can be combined with other support before committing to a workload.

What to include in an AWS application

  1. Define the service: describe the beneficiary-facing product or internal platform, its users and the problem it solves.
  2. Show the architecture: identify data stores, compute, networking, identity, backup, monitoring and security responsibilities at a level reviewers can understand.
  3. Provide a delivery sequence: separate discovery, prototype, pilot, launch and scale, with owners and dates.
  4. Budget beyond credits: include engineering, migration, training, accessibility, support, data governance and any third-party services.
  5. Measure outcomes: choose indicators such as people served, processing time, service availability, completion rate or cost per beneficiary.
  6. Explain sustainability: state how the nonprofit will operate the system after the grant or credits expire.

AWS fits organizations with a defined technical project and someone accountable for delivery. If your need is simply staff email or office productivity, a cloud-project grant may add unnecessary complexity.

Cisco programs: donated technology or cash for a technology-enabled mission

Cisco Technology Grant Program

Cisco says its Technology Grant Program provides donated hardware, software and services to qualifying nonprofits. The stated goals include improving productivity, security, scalability and cost efficiency. This route is appropriate when the bottleneck is network capacity, secure connectivity, infrastructure or related technology rather than cloud compute alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before applying, inventory your sites, users, bandwidth, existing equipment, power and cabling. Name the person or partner who will configure, patch, monitor and eventually replace the equipment. A donation without a deployment plan can create unsupported systems and new security exposure.

Cisco Global Impact Cash Grants

Cisco’s Global Impact Cash Grants are separate from the technology donation program. They support nonprofits and NGOs addressing significant social problems, particularly where technology improves reach or efficiency. Frame the request around the social intervention and its measurable effect, with technology as the enabling method—not as a shopping list.

Cisco lists exclusions. General operating expenses are generally excluded unless directly tied to the program; individuals and research programs are excluded, as are some narrowly defined population or viewpoint programs. Read the current exclusions carefully and map every budget line to an eligible program activity.

Choosing between Cisco’s two routes

  • Choose the Technology Grant Program when donated equipment, software or services directly solve a capacity, security or connectivity need.
  • Choose the Global Impact Cash Grant when the central request is funding for a social program whose delivery or scale is improved by technology.
  • Do not treat a technology donation as free implementation. Include installation, configuration, training, maintenance, replacement and security in the plan.

TechSoup: an access partner, not a universal grant

TechSoup helps nonprofits obtain donated or discounted technology, training and capacity support. AWS describes nonprofit resources through TechSoup globally, and Microsoft identifies TechSoup and Tech Impact as partners that help organizations build technology capacity. TechSoup’s inventory, fees, product limits and country availability vary, so check the current catalog and local eligibility after validation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use TechSoup when you need a practical distribution route for software or services, when a major vendor requires partner validation, or when your organization needs implementation guidance rather than a competitive cash award. Keep the distinction clear in board materials: access through a partner is not the same as receiving a grant, and a donated product still has administrative and renewal obligations.

How to select and sequence applications

  1. Write a one-page project brief. Include the problem, beneficiaries, geography, legal status, current technology, requested support, budget, owner, timeline and two to five outcome measures.
  2. Classify the award. Mark the request as recurring software, cloud credits, donated hardware and services, or program cash. If it spans categories, split it into separable work packages.
  3. Check legal and geographic fit. Confirm nonprofit registration, country rules, U.S. 501(c)(3) status where required, and any mission restrictions.
  4. Match maturity to program. Use Microsoft for operational standardization, AWS for a defined cloud build, and Cisco for networking or a technology-enabled social program.
  5. Build the implementation case. Identify procurement, data-security controls, accessibility, staff capacity, vendor or partner roles, and post-award support.
  6. Review restrictions. Check utilization, eligible services, expiration, overhead exclusions, reporting, branding, data handling and equipment lifecycle requirements.
  7. Apply through the live portal. Recheck the deadline, award category, amount and country-specific terms on the official program page on the day you submit.
  8. Prepare a fallback. If a competitive grant is unsuccessful, preserve the technical design and seek credits, donated products or a partner-distribution route for the same project.

What to do after approval

Assign ownership before accepting the award

Name an executive sponsor, technical owner, finance contact and program owner. Record who controls the cloud account or administrative tenant, who approves purchases and who reports outcomes. For donated hardware, document serial numbers, locations, warranty terms and replacement dates.

Protect data and access

Use least-privilege roles, multi-factor authentication, centralized account recovery, tested backups and an incident-response contact. Classify personal or sensitive data before migration. A grant does not transfer legal responsibility for privacy, safeguarding or records retention.

Track utilization and outcomes

For Microsoft grants, monitor the 85% utilization threshold rather than waiting for renewal. For AWS, track credit consumption, service costs and expiration. For Cisco equipment, measure deployment, uptime, coverage, security events or beneficiaries served. Keep invoices, acceptance records, configuration notes and outcome evidence together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan the end of the subsidy

Estimate the recurring cost after credits, discounts or donated licenses end. Decide which workloads can be retired, resized or funded from ordinary operations. A sustainable project has a named budget owner and a support plan, not just a successful launch.

Common failure points and fixes

  • Applying for the wrong resource: A software discount cannot pay for engineering salaries. Reclassify the request and choose cash, credits or in-kind support accordingly.
  • Over-requesting licenses: Unused granted software can threaten future eligibility under Microsoft’s utilization rule. Start with an adoption-based rollout.
  • Confusing global and U.S. programs: AWS promotional credits are described worldwide, while AWS Imagine is explicitly for registered U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofits. Verify the route before drafting.
  • Ignoring implementation costs: Hardware, cloud credits and donated software still require people, security, training and maintenance. Put those costs in the plan.
  • Hiding general overhead in a program budget: Cisco’s cash-grant exclusions limit general operating expenses unless directly tied to the program. Map each line to an eligible activity.
  • Using old deadlines or award figures: Grant cycles, categories, prices and country rules are volatile. Treat every prior-year date or amount as historical until the live page confirms it.
  • Weak outcome design: Count the social result—people reached, time saved, access improved or costs reduced—not only the number of devices or cloud instances purchased.

A practical decision framework

Start with the sentence that completes this prompt: “Our nonprofit needs ___ so that ___.” If the first blank is email, collaboration, identity, endpoint or security infrastructure, begin with Microsoft Nonprofits. If it is a cloud-hosted application, data platform, AI workflow or digital service with a defined build plan, examine AWS Imagine and AWS promotional credits. If it is networking or security equipment, examine Cisco’s Technology Grant Program. If it is a measurable social program where technology expands reach or efficiency, examine Cisco’s Global Impact Cash Grants. If the immediate need is obtaining validated tools and implementation support, use TechSoup as an access partner.

These routes can complement one another, but do not count a potential award as committed funding. Confirm eligibility, deadline, award type, restrictions and post-award obligations in the current official materials before signing a procurement agreement or starting a dependent build.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
