The best tablet for reading ebooks depends on what you read: choose a conventional tablet for color, PDFs, apps, and browsing; choose an E Ink reader for long stretches of novels and fewer charging breaks. For a compact all-purpose tablet, the iPad mini (A17 Pro) is a supported option. The Kindle Paperwhite is a reading-first alternative, not a tablet.
Tablet or E Ink reader: which is better for reading?
A conventional LCD or OLED tablet gives you color, broad app access, web browsing, and multitasking. That flexibility suits comics, magazines, illustrated books, many PDFs, and readers who also want one device for other tasks. The trade-off is a brighter, more general-purpose screen and typically more frequent charging than an E Ink reader.

E Ink readers are designed primarily for text. They can be a better fit for novels, focused reading, and outdoor use, with longer intervals between charges. Kobo’s 2026 comparison describes the category trade-offs and reports that its 8-inch Kobo Sage weighs 241 g, compared with 297 g for an 8.2-inch iPad mini; those figures refer to those specific models, not every reader or tablet. Which compact tablet is a strong pick for ebooks?
Apple iPad mini (A17 Pro)
The iPad mini (A17 Pro) is a compact choice for readers who want ebook apps alongside browsing and other tablet tasks. NBC Select lists an 8.3-inch display, 0.65 lb weight, USB-C, and up to 10 hours of battery life, and reports using the Kindle app for reading. These are guide-published specifications and reported experience, not an independent battery test for this article. NBC Select’s tablet guide
#1 Best Overall
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
Its small size makes it easier to carry than a larger tablet, but a case adds weight, and a tablet of this size may still feel heavier in hand than a dedicated reader. Its app flexibility is useful for readers switching among ebook services, PDFs, web pages, and other content.
What if reading is the main purpose?
Kindle Paperwhite
The Kindle Paperwhite is an E Ink reader rather than a tablet. Amazon lists adjustable warm light, waterproofing, and battery life of up to 12 weeks per charge for its current Paperwhite. That is Amazon’s manufacturer estimate, not a result directly comparable with a tablet’s “up to” battery figure: usage and test conditions differ. Amazon’s 2026 Kindle lineup announcement

Consider it when novels and ordinary text dominate your reading and you do not need the full range of tablet apps or color presentation. Amazon’s separate claim that Kindle users read more than 720 billion pages in 2025 is a company-reported usage figure; it does not establish comparative product quality.

- Novels and ordinary ebooks: An E Ink reader is usually the more focused option. A tablet remains useful if you want to use several reading services or switch to other apps.
- Color magazines, comics, and illustrated material: A conventional tablet is the more flexible choice because it can display color content and run a wider range of apps.
- Dense or large PDFs: A tablet’s app and display flexibility can help with zooming, navigation, and annotation. Check the specific app and document workflow you rely on; no single screen size suits every PDF.
- Reading while traveling: Compare the actual device weight and screen size, and account for a protective case. Similar screen sizes do not guarantee similar handheld comfort.
- One device for reading and everything else: A tablet’s browsing and multitasking can justify its weight and charging needs if you will regularly use those capabilities.
What about Samsung Galaxy Tab models?
Samsung’s official comparison page covers weights across Galaxy Tab models and lists accessories such as covers and screen protectors. It does not, in the reviewed material, establish a particular Galaxy Tab as a reading-first winner. If you prefer Android, compare the specific model’s display, weight, battery information, and compatibility with the reading and PDF apps you use rather than assuming the whole family performs alike. Why this is not a ranked top-five list
The available evidence supports one specific compact tablet recommendation and a dedicated E Ink alternative, but it does not provide current, comparable specifications for five tablet models. Treating an e-reader as one of five tablets would also blur an important distinction: it is an alternative category, not a tablet pick. iTechGuides’ 2025 framework likewise describes its recommendations as specification-based rather than personal hands-on test results. iTechGuides’ reading tablet guide
For a fair five-model ranking, each candidate would need current manufacturer specifications checked on consistent terms, including display, weight, battery conditions, app compatibility, and market availability. Samsung’s comparison page provides family context, but does not by itself answer which specific model is best for reading.
