Redis GEO queries can return quickly, but there is no universal microsecond response time. The result depends on the search area and matches, plus client, network or local-socket, and server conditions. Pipelining can cut repeated round-trip overhead when commands are independent; it does not make the work of a single GEOSEARCH disappear. The term “wpipe” is not defined in the Redis documentation cited here, so it cannot be treated as a Redis feature, client, or benchmark setup.
How Redis GEO stores and searches locations
Redis GEO uses a sorted set to store location members. GEOADD inserts coordinates, and GEOSEARCH finds members within a circle or rectangle. GEOSEARCH has been available since Redis Open Source 6.2.0. This sorted-set interface is distinct from Redis Search geospatial indexing, which indexes geo fields in JSON documents and supports geometric shapes and spatial relationships.

Add coordinates with longitude first
The command form is GEOADD key longitude latitude member. The coordinate order matters: longitude comes before latitude. Redis encodes coordinates in a 52-bit integer by interleaving longitude and latitude bits, and stores the resulting geospatial index in the sorted set. The documented complexity is O(log(N)) per item.
Redis accepts longitude from −180 through 180 degrees and latitude from −85.05112878 through 85.05112878 degrees. The latitude limit means locations very near the poles cannot be indexed.

Search a circle or rectangle
GEOSEARCH can start from a stored member with FROMMEMBER or from coordinates with FROMLONLAT, then define a circle with BYRADIUS or a rectangle with BYBOX. Optional arguments include ASC or DESC ordering, COUNT (including the ANY modifier), and returned data such as coordinates, distance, or hash via WITHCOORD, WITHDIST, and WITHHASH. See the Redis GEOSEARCH command reference for syntax and current command details.
What GEOSEARCH complexity means for latency
Redis documents GEOSEARCH complexity as O(N+log(M)). Here, N is the number of elements in the grid-aligned bounding box around the requested shape, and M is the number of indexed members inside that shape. This is not a fixed cost per query: the area and shape searched, point density, sorting, and result count all affect the amount of work.

A small COUNT does not necessarily make a broad search cheap. Without ANY, Redis may gather and sort matches before returning only the requested number, so a large search area with a low count can still require substantial work. Choosing a tighter shape or using an option that allows earlier stopping can change the trade-off, but results and ordering requirements should guide that choice.

What pipelining changes—and what it does not
Redis follows a request/response model. With sequential commands, a client sends one request and waits for its reply before sending the next. Pipelining sends several commands before reading their replies, amortizing round-trip overhead across a batch and reducing socket system-call overhead. It can improve throughput and reduce the communication portion of elapsed time; it does not reduce the intrinsic work of one GEO search.

Redis’s official pipelining documentation puts it this way: “Pipelining is not just a way to reduce the latency cost associated with the round trip time, it actually greatly improves the number of operations you can perform per second in a given Redis server.”
Use it for independent commands
A pipeline helps when the client can issue commands without first consuming each preceding result. If command two needs command one’s reply to determine its arguments, pipelining alone cannot remove that dependency. For read-compute-write flows of that kind, Redis identifies server-side scripting as an option.

- Large 2.6” sunlight-readable color display for easy viewing
- Expanded global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and multi-band technology allow you to get optimal accuracy in challenging locations, including steep country, urban canyons and forests with dense trees
- Includes routable TopoActive mapping and federal public land map (U.S. only)
- Compatible with the Garmin Explore website and app (compatible smartphone required) to help you manage tracks, routes and waypoints and review statistics from the field
Bound batch size
The server queues replies until the client reads them, so an unbounded pipeline can consume significant memory. Send a reasonable batch, read its replies, then continue. The useful batch size depends on the workload and should be measured rather than assumed.
Why “microseconds” is not a universal GEO response time
End-to-end latency includes Redis processing as well as client/runtime overhead, operating-system work, and network or local interprocess communication. Redis’s latency guidance says most commands are processed in the sub-microsecond range, but that is not the same as a user’s full request-response time. The same documentation gives illustrative figures of about 200 microseconds for typical 1 Gbit/s network latency and as low as 30 microseconds for Unix domain sockets. These are environment-dependent examples, not guarantees or GEO benchmarks.

One Redis-published geographic-command benchmark reported average GEOSEARCH latency including round-trip time of 93.598 ms on Redis 7.0.5 and 73.046 ms on Redis 7.0.7—about 22% lower in that benchmark. Those are millisecond results for the reported setup, not a prediction for another dataset, query, deployment, or pipeline configuration.
How to benchmark your own GEO workload
A synchronous loop that sends a command and waits for every reply can mostly measure network or IPC and client-library overhead. Redis benchmarking guidance recommends representative workloads; for GEO, report enough detail to make results interpretable and comparisons fair.
- Software and deployment: Redis version, client and runtime, hardware, network topology, and whether the connection uses a network or a local socket.
- Data and query: dataset size and density, query center, circle or box dimensions, and whether the data and server were warm or cold.
- Command behavior:
COUNT,ANY, ordering, returned fields, and actual result sizes. - Load and reporting: pipeline batch size, concurrency, command mix, and p50, p95, and p99 latency. State whether timing includes round trips and compare only workloads with matching conditions.
Redis’s benchmarking guidance explains why benchmark design matters. For a latency-specific framing, consult its latency optimization documentation.

| Choice | Best fit | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Redis GEO sorted-set commands | Point locations and circular or rectangular proximity searches | Simple GEO commands; search cost varies with the area, density, sorting, and result requirements. |
| Redis Search geospatial indexing | Geo fields in JSON documents or queries needing geometric shapes and spatial relationships | A separate indexing and query feature with broader geospatial capabilities. |
| Sequential requests | When each next command depends on the previous reply | Each request incurs its own wait for a response. |
| Pipelined batches | Independent commands where reducing repeated round trips or increasing throughput matters | Replies occupy memory until read; batch size must be controlled. |
| Unix domain socket | Client and Redis sharing a host where local IPC fits the deployment | May have lower communication latency, but actual end-to-end performance still depends on the system and workload. |
| Network connection | Clients and Redis on separate hosts or networked infrastructure | Network latency contributes to response time and must be measured in the target topology. |
For command syntax and data-model distinctions, Redis documents geospatial data and pipelining. The relevant option is the one that matches the data and query semantics; latency comparisons are meaningful only when they use the same workload and deployment conditions.
