Start with The Evil Within 2 if you want the clearest connection to Resident Evil: it was developed by Shinji Mikami, the creator of the seminal series. Choose Tormented Souls for fixed-perspective mansion and hospital exploration, SIGNALIS for a compact top-down interpretation of classic survival horror, Alien: Isolation for stealth against a persistent Xenomorph, or Directive 8020 for cinematic science-fiction survival horror with branching story decisions.
The right choice depends on which part of Resident Evil you miss most: puzzle-box exploration, constrained resources, unsettling creatures, deliberate combat, or the tension of being hunted. This guide separates those qualities so you can choose a solo game without relying on a generic “horror games” list.

What “like Resident Evil” can mean
Resident Evil has changed considerably across its history, so “similar” is not one precise category. Some players mean the fixed camera, mansion maps and locked-door puzzles of the early games. Others mean the later emphasis on combat, grotesque enemies and cinematic set pieces. A third group wants the resource anxiety itself: every healing item, key and ammunition decision should matter.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Lineage: You want a game made by, or closely associated with, the creative team behind classic Resident Evil.
- Exploration: You want to learn an interconnected building, solve environmental puzzles and return to previously inaccessible rooms.
- Inventory and puzzle tension: You prefer planning what to carry and interpreting clues over constant action.
- Evasion: You want the fear of being tracked, where hiding and movement are more important than defeating every threat.
- Cinematic science fiction: You want the survival-horror formula moved to a spacefaring or futuristic setting with story choices.
Every recommendation is single-player oriented, but their emotional rhythms differ. A fixed-perspective puzzle game creates tension by limiting what you can see; a pursuit game creates it by making the enemy’s presence the central problem; a branching cinematic game creates it through uncertainty about who can be trusted and which decisions will carry forward.
The Evil Within 2: the clearest Resident Evil creator connection
Why it is the first recommendation
Bethesda’s official description identifies Shinji Mikami as the creator of the seminal Resident Evil series and credits him and Tango Gameworks with developing The Evil Within. Bethesda also presents The Evil Within 2 as part of that series. That is the strongest direct lineage among the games in this list, making it the safest starting point when your question is specifically “what should I play after Resident Evil?”
This connection is more meaningful than a store tag. Mikami’s name signals an intentional continuation of survival-horror design ideas rather than a game that merely borrows a few monsters or jump scares. If you want grotesque action horror with the identity of a creator associated with Resident Evil, this is the most defensible choice.

- Choose it if creator lineage matters more to you than reproducing the exact fixed-camera format.
- Choose it if you want a larger, more contemporary presentation of survival horror.
- Choose it if your favorite Resident Evil moments combine combat with disturbing environments and escalating threats.
Who may prefer another game?
Players specifically seeking the original mansion formula should begin with Tormented Souls instead. Players who want to avoid combat as much as possible should begin with Alien: Isolation. The Mikami connection makes The Evil Within 2 the best first stop for lineage, not a guarantee that every structural detail will mirror an early Resident Evil game.

Tormented Souls: fixed-perspective mansion and hospital horror
Why it feels closest to classic Resident Evil structure
The Steam description for Tormented Souls says it is “Inspired by the original Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark series” and calls it a modernized fixed-perspective adventure. That combination directly addresses the elements many players mean when they ask for a PS1-style survival-horror game: carefully framed rooms, an oppressive building to learn, puzzles that gate progress, and the need to balance exploration with combat.
The setting emphasis is especially useful for choosing. This is the recommendation for a mansion-and-hospital exploration loop, not merely for supernatural imagery. You explore, investigate, solve puzzles and fight when necessary, with the fixed perspective shaping how much information each room reveals at once.
What to expect from its design
- Fixed perspective: Camera placement is part of the tension. A doorway or corridor can conceal information until you move into the next composition.
- Puzzle-led progress: Exploration is not a straight march from one encounter to the next; clues and locked paths give the environment a deliberate logic.
- Combat alongside investigation: The game combines combat, exploration and puzzles rather than treating horror as a purely passive experience.
- Single-player focus: Its structure is built for a solitary player learning the location and its rules.
Who should pick Tormented Souls?
Pick it when your ideal follow-up to Resident Evil includes room-to-room navigation, backtracking and the satisfaction of opening a route you noticed earlier. It is also the clearest choice for players who use “fixed-camera horror” as their search term. The explicit inspiration from the original Resident Evil makes the comparison unusually direct.

SIGNALIS: top-down survival horror with psychological and cosmic dread
Why it belongs on a Resident Evil shortlist
SIGNALIS translates classic survival-horror ideas into a compact, top-down format. PlayStation describes terrifying secrets, challenging puzzles and nightmarish creatures in a tense, melancholic experience of cosmic dread and classic psychological survival horror. The PlayStation Blog calls it a love letter to PS1-era survival-horror games such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill.
That wording explains both the similarity and the difference. The game uses the recognizable pressures of classic survival horror—exploration, puzzles, inventory decisions and dangerous creatures—but presents them through a top-down viewpoint and a more overtly psychological, science-fiction frame.
Its defining combination
- Top-down viewpoint: You read spaces differently from a fixed-camera mansion game, with a broader tactical view of the immediate area.
- Challenging puzzles: Progress depends on interpreting clues rather than simply defeating enemies.
- Nightmarish creatures: Threats support an atmosphere of dread instead of functioning only as targets.
- Psychological and cosmic horror: The tone is melancholic and strange, extending survival horror beyond a conventional haunted-house story.
When SIGNALIS is the best choice
Choose SIGNALIS if you want the resource-and-puzzle mindset of classic Resident Evil in a shorter, more concentrated presentation. It is particularly well suited to players who enjoy deciphering an environment and absorbing an unsettling mood at the same time. The PS1-era connection is explicit, but the top-down design and cosmic science-fiction themes give it a distinct identity.
Do not choose it expecting a direct recreation of a mansion map or a creator-led continuation. Its appeal is interpretation: familiar survival-horror principles filtered through psychological and cosmic horror.

Alien: Isolation: survival by evasion and pursuit
Why it is different from combat-first horror
Alien: Isolation is the pick when the most frightening part of Resident Evil for you is not shooting enemies but trying to survive when a powerful threat controls the room. SEGA describes the game’s deadly Xenomorph tension as the foundation of its survival-horror experience. The central appeal is therefore evasion: staying alive depends on movement, concealment and judgment rather than treating every encounter as a fight to win.
This changes the rhythm substantially. In a puzzle-box game, the question is often “How do I open the next area?” In Alien: Isolation, the immediate question can be “Can I cross this area without being found?” The resulting suspense is closer to a hunt than to a sequence of battles.
Choose it if you want sustained uncertainty
- Evasion over extermination: The Xenomorph is the problem to survive, not a routine opponent to clear from the map.
- Persistent threat: The tension comes from the possibility that the creature can still find you, even after a quiet stretch.
- Science-fiction setting: The survival-horror formula is grounded in alien suspense rather than a mansion or hospital.
Who should choose something else?
If your favorite part of Resident Evil is collecting keys, decoding environmental clues and unlocking a central building, Tormented Souls is a closer structural match. If you want explicit branching story tools, look to Directive 8020. Alien: Isolation is the specialist recommendation for players who want fear to come from being pursued.
Directive 8020: cinematic, branching science-fiction survival horror
What sets it apart
Bandai Namco describes Directive 8020 as following the crew of the Cassiopeia while they are hunted by an alien organism capable of mimicking its prey. It combines survival gameplay with branching story tools, making it the most explicitly cinematic and decision-driven option in this group.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The mimic premise adds a different kind of uncertainty from a single visible monster. The danger is not only where the creature is, but whether the person or situation in front of you is what it appears to be. That identity problem gives the game a science-fiction angle while preserving the core survival-horror question: how do you stay alive when information is incomplete?
Who should watch this one?
- Science-fiction fans: Choose it if a spacefaring crew and alien organism are more appealing than a terrestrial mansion or hospital.
- Branching-story players: Choose it if decisions that alter the narrative are part of the attraction.
- Cinematic-horror fans: Choose it if you prefer character-centered suspense and visible story consequences alongside survival gameplay.
How it compares with Alien: Isolation
Both recommendations move survival horror into science fiction, but they emphasize different pressures. Alien: Isolation is defined by evading a deadly Xenomorph and sustaining pursuit tension. Directive 8020 adds a crew-based, branching narrative and an organism that can mimic its prey. Pick the former for stealth-first dread; pick the latter for cinematic decisions and uncertainty about identity.
