Best Survival Games to Play After Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey

If you want another game like Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, start with Green Hell for the closest environmental-survival pressure. Choose Far Cry Primal for prehistoric wildlife and human conflict, The Forest or Sons of the Forest for horror and construction, The Long Dark for deliberate wilderness planning, Subnautica for discovery-led exploration, and Valheim for crafting, bosses, sea travel and cooperative building. None reproduces Ancestors’ evolutionary clan progression exactly, so the right follow-up depends on which part of its Explore, Expand and Evolve loop mattered most to you.

What makes a good follow-up to Ancestors?

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a third-person, open-world survival game set in Africa beginning 10 million years ago. You guide an early hominin clan, experiment with the environment, manage wildlife and other dangers, and advance through generations. Its central promise is “Explore, Expand and Evolve”: your decisions shape the clan’s story and determine whether it survives.

That combination is unusual. Most survival games concentrate on one or two of the following rather than all of them:

  • Discovery and experimentation: learning what an unfamiliar world allows you to do.
  • Environmental severity: responding to hunger, thirst, exposure, injury or other natural threats.
  • Setting: a prehistoric world, realistic wilderness or fictional ecosystem.
  • Progression: an authored story, technological advancement, boss sequence or open-ended sandbox.
  • Construction: whether shelter and tools are incidental or the main activity.
  • Social play: a solitary experience, optional co-op or a game designed around a group.

The recommendations below are organized around those differences rather than pretending there is a single replacement for Ancestors.

Green Hell: the closest environmental-survival alternative

Why it fits

Choose Green Hell when the part of Ancestors you miss is having to read a living ecosystem before acting. Its jungle setting makes resource management and bodily or environmental hazards central, so progress comes from understanding conditions rather than simply following a waypoint. That creates the same broad sensation of being a vulnerable creature in an unfamiliar natural world.

What changes

Green Hell is first-person and simulation-oriented, not a third-person game about an evolving clan. You are dealing with an individual survivor’s immediate needs instead of transferring knowledge and abilities across generations. The perspective and structure make it more intimate and demanding, while removing Ancestors’ long evolutionary arc.

Choose it if

  • You want the harshest nature-focused follow-up on this list.
  • You enjoy discovering which environmental conditions are dangerous through observation and experimentation.
  • You prefer survival systems to a heavily directed action plot.

Far Cry Primal: prehistoric wildlife with a stronger action focus

Why it fits

Far Cry Primal is the clearest choice for a reader whose favorite part of Ancestors was its prehistoric atmosphere. It combines wildlife with conflict between human groups, giving the setting a social and territorial dimension rather than presenting nature as the only opponent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What changes

This is an action-adventure game, so its momentum is more directed and combat-focused than Ancestors’ systems-heavy survival. You get the visual and thematic appeal of prehistory without the same emphasis on open-ended experimentation, clan management or evolutionary transitions. Treat it as a setting and atmosphere match, not a mechanical remake.

Choose it if

  • You want prehistoric people and animals in a more immediately playable action format.
  • Human-group conflict interests you as much as wildlife danger.
  • You would trade some simulation depth for a clearer action-adventure structure.

The Forest and Sons of the Forest: horror, shelter and traps

The Forest

The Forest turns survival into horror. Its island setting, construction and traps make shelter a strategic activity, while the surrounding threats create pressure to decide when to explore and when to fortify. It is a good step if Ancestors’ encounters with dangerous wildlife made you want a more frightening version of being exposed in the wilderness.

The trade-off is tone and structure. The Forest is not about gradual hominin evolution; its identity comes from survival horror and building a defensible base. Exploration is shaped by fear and hostile encounters rather than by a clan’s scientific curiosity.

Sons of the Forest

Sons of the Forest follows the same broad survival-horror direction in a newer island scenario after a crash. Food and hydration remain practical concerns, and the game adds a strong emphasis on building, animal traps and hostile locals. Pick it when you want construction to be a major part of the loop rather than a minor convenience.

How to choose between them

If you want… Pick Reason
The original survival-horror and construction formula The Forest Its identity is built around an island, shelter and traps under horror pressure.
A newer island experience with food, hydration, building and hostile inhabitants Sons of the Forest It extends the same broad concept with a strong construction focus.

The Long Dark: deliberate wilderness survival

Why it fits

The Long Dark is for players who enjoyed the idea that every journey in Ancestors should be planned around danger. Its premise is direct: a pilot crash-lands in the Canadian wilderness and must survive immediately. The game’s appeal lies in exposure management, route planning and making limited resources last.

  • [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

What changes

The pace is slower and the mood more solitary. You are not guiding a clan through a 10-million-year journey, and there is no prehistoric setting. Instead, the wilderness itself is the central problem. Weather, distance and preparation shape decisions more than combat or elaborate construction.

Choose it if

  • You prefer careful preparation to rapid action.
  • You want survival pressure grounded in exposure and wilderness logistics.
  • You are happy with a focused solo rhythm instead of clan progression or co-op building.

Subnautica: discovery and technology in an alien ocean

Why it fits

Subnautica changes the setting completely but preserves the reward of learning an unfamiliar ecosystem. You explore an underwater alien world, gather resources, construct habitats and advance through technology. New wildlife and environments continually force you to revise what you think is safe and what equipment you need next.

What changes

The progression is technological rather than evolutionary. Habitat construction and equipment upgrades give the game a stronger crafting-and-technology identity, while the underwater setting changes movement, visibility and the way danger is encountered. If you loved the feeling of discovering what the world contains, rather than the African setting itself, this is one of the strongest matches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if

  • Exploration and unfamiliar wildlife were your favorite Ancestors activities.
  • You want a clear technology progression tied to resource gathering.
  • You like constructing habitats as a practical part of exploring farther.

Valheim: crafting, bosses and cooperative building

Why it fits

Valheim is the broadest sandbox recommendation here. Set in a Viking afterlife, it combines procedural exploration, cooking, crafting, sea travel, dangerous new continents and boss progression. Base building is substantial, and cooperative play is a central reason to choose it.

What changes

Valheim emphasizes combat, equipment, construction and group progression more than observation-based survival. The world is fictional and procedurally structured rather than a naturalistic prehistoric Africa. Its loop is about preparing for the next biome or boss, expanding a settlement and sharing work with other players, not managing an evolving hominin lineage.

Choose it if

  • You want to play with friends while building a shared base.
  • Crafting, cooking, ships and boss milestones sound better than strict environmental simulation.
  • You enjoy a sandbox that keeps opening new regions and challenges.

Pick by the part of Ancestors you want to keep

Your priority Best starting point Why Main compromise
Experimenting in a dangerous natural environment Green Hell Environmental hazards and resource management are the core challenge. First-person individual survival replaces clan evolution.
Prehistoric wildlife and people Far Cry Primal It preserves the era and adds human-group conflict. Action-adventure pacing is less systems-driven.
Fear, shelter and traps The Forest or Sons of the Forest Construction and hostile encounters define the experience. Horror replaces evolutionary discovery.
Slow, realistic wilderness pressure The Long Dark Exposure and preparation drive every trip. No prehistoric setting or elaborate base focus.
Exploration and learning through new discoveries Subnautica Alien ecosystems and technology reward curiosity. Technology progression replaces biological evolution.
Crafting, expansion and co-op Valheim Procedural regions, bosses and shared bases create long-term goals. Combat and construction outweigh naturalistic survival.

How the survival pressure differs

Environmental severity and realism

Green Hell and The Long Dark put the greatest emphasis on environmental pressure. Green Hell asks you to manage the jungle and the body’s response to it; The Long Dark asks you to plan around exposure and the limits of a remote wilderness. Ancestors sits between those approaches: its environment is dangerous, but the larger goal is to learn, protect and advance a clan.

Horror and hostile inhabitants

The Forest and Sons of the Forest add a threat Ancestors largely does not: sustained horror. Their islands are not just ecosystems to understand; they are places where hostile inhabitants and uncertainty make shelter and traps valuable. Choose them when tension is more important than scientific-style discovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Combat and progression milestones

Far Cry Primal and Valheim make conflict more prominent. Far Cry Primal uses a directed action-adventure structure, while Valheim turns preparation, equipment and bosses into a sandbox progression loop. Both are better for players who want a clear sense of combat advancement than for those seeking Ancestors’ patient experimentation.

A practical play order

  1. Start with Green Hell if you want the closest overall environmental-survival sensation.
  2. Move to Subnautica if discovery matters more than realism and you want a stronger technology arc.
  3. Choose The Long Dark for a slower, more solitary test of planning and exposure management.
  4. Try Far Cry Primal when the prehistoric setting is the non-negotiable feature.
  5. Pick The Forest or Sons of the Forest when you want that vulnerability expressed through horror, construction and traps.
  6. Finish with Valheim if you want an expansive crafting sandbox and cooperative base-building after the more solitary games.

You do not need to follow this order. It simply moves from Ancestors’ environmental curiosity toward more specialized alternatives: simulation, discovery, wilderness planning, prehistoric action, horror construction and cooperative crafting.

What to expect when switching from Ancestors

Do not expect another evolutionary clan system

Ancestors’ defining distinction is that experimentation feeds a clan’s development and the next generation. The recommended games divide that idea among different systems: Green Hell and The Long Dark make immediate survival deeper; Subnautica makes discovery and technology deeper; Far Cry Primal preserves prehistory; The Forest games make shelter and fear deeper; Valheim makes crafting, bosses and co-op expansion deeper.

Decide whether you want direction or a sandbox

Far Cry Primal gives you the most action-adventure direction. Green Hell and The Long Dark are more about responding to conditions. Subnautica uses discovery and technology to pull you forward. The Forest games combine exploration with horror and construction. Valheim is the most openly sandbox-oriented, particularly when several players share a base and divide gathering or building work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose solo or cooperative play deliberately

For a solitary, reflective experience, begin with The Long Dark, Green Hell or Subnautica. The Forest and Sons of the Forest center on survival and construction that can be enjoyed alone or with others, while Valheim most clearly emphasizes cooperative building and shared progression. That social emphasis can change the entire pace of a survival game, so choose it before you commit to a long-running world.

Availability and buying notes

Store listings, supported platforms, editions and prices can change by region and over time. Check the current storefront page for the specific game and edition before buying, especially for The Forest versus Sons of the Forest and for any co-op requirements. The recommendations above describe each game’s design and best use case, not a permanent claim about price, availability or edition status.

Bottom line

Start with Green Hell for the nearest environmental-survival match. Choose Subnautica if discovery was the real attraction, Far Cry Primal if prehistory matters most, The Forest or Sons of the Forest for horror and construction, The Long Dark for deliberate wilderness planning, and Valheim for crafting and cooperative expansion. Each keeps one important part of Ancestors while changing the others, so your favorite element should decide the next game.
