Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →There is no single best Stripe Link replacement. Choose based on where the agent finishes the order: Apple Pay or Google Pay for a user-approved wallet handoff, PayPal Braintree Agent Ready for documented multi-assistant acceptance, Stripe Delegated Checkout or Shared Payment Tokens for embedded agent flows, and protocol-based machine payments for recurring or per-request transactions.
Stripe Link is Stripe’s digital wallet for saving and reusing a customer’s preferred payment methods. An alternative should therefore be judged on more than a checkout button: agent reach, consent and token scope, merchant control, implementation work, and country, currency, underwriting and payment-method coverage all matter.

Start with the checkout model, not the wallet brand
Agent-assisted checkout can mean three different things. In a browser or device-native handoff, an AI assistant finds a product and sends the shopper to a normal checkout where the shopper authorizes a wallet sheet. In an embedded agent checkout, the assistant requests product, shipping, fulfillment and payment choices inside its own interface while the merchant remains responsible for the sale. In a machine-to-machine payment, software pays for an API request, session or usage event with little or no conventional shopping cart.

- The customer should approve a familiar wallet sheet on a device: evaluate Apple Pay and Google Pay.
- You need orders from ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini through one documented provider path: evaluate PayPal Braintree Agent Ready.
- You already process with Stripe and want the agent to stay inside an AI interface: evaluate Delegated Checkout and Shared Payment Tokens before replacing Link.
- Software is buying metered usage or individual requests: evaluate machine-payment protocols rather than a consumer wallet button.
These choices are not mutually exclusive. A merchant can retain a conventional web wallet for shoppers, add an assistant protocol for discovery and use a separate machine-payment flow for API customers.

What Stripe Link provides—and what an alternative must match
Stripe describes Link as “Stripe’s digital wallet, which lets customers save and reuse their preferred payment methods.” Eligible customers may see cards, Instant Bank Payments, Klarna, Pix, UPI or stablecoins, depending on market and eligibility. Link’s value is the saved credential, fast recognition and reuse across participating Stripe checkouts.
For agent commerce, the important property is protected delegation. Stripe’s Shared Payment Tokens allow an agent to initiate a payment with a customer’s saved method without exposing the underlying credentials. The authorization is scoped to a seller, amount and time window. When comparing alternatives, ask whether they provide equivalent scope, how the shopper approves an order, which assistant surfaces are supported and whether the merchant must use a particular processor.
A wallet alternative may replace only the payment sheet. A protocol alternative may also carry catalog, inventory, shipping, tax, fulfillment, refund and customer-service messages. Treat those as different categories rather than interchangeable products.
Apple Pay: the closest device-native wallet alternative
How it works
Apple documents two web integration routes: Apple Pay JS and the W3C Payment Request API. The shopper selects Apple Pay, reviews the transaction in an Apple-authorized sheet and confirms with the device’s normal authentication. An agent can discover or prepare the order, but the user-authorized sheet remains the point at which the payment credential is approved.
Requirements
- An Apple Developer account.
- HTTPS for the checkout origin.
- Merchant identifiers and payment-processing certificates.
- Domain verification for each web domain that presents Apple Pay.
- A supported payment service provider or an approved e-commerce platform.
Apple states that a provider SDK or JavaScript API is generally the quickest and most reliable integration route. Confirm that your existing processor supports Apple Pay in the countries and currencies you serve before designing an agent handoff.

- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
Best fit and trade-offs
Apple Pay is strongest when a large share of shoppers use Apple devices and the agent can hand the customer to Safari or another supported web surface. It does not, by itself, create a cross-assistant order protocol. Device and browser coverage, certificate operations, regional rules and the exact handoff from an AI interface all need testing.
Implementation outline
- Register the merchant identifier and payment-processing certificate in the Apple Developer account.
- Verify every checkout domain and serve the checkout over HTTPS.
- Use the provider’s Apple Pay SDK or Apple Pay JS/Payment Request API to create the payment request.
- Have the agent pass a server-created cart identifier, price and shipping choices to the checkout rather than accepting price data from the client.
- Display the Apple Pay sheet only after the order total, shipping address and applicable taxes are known.
- Send the authorized payment token to the processor, confirm the result server-side and return an order status to the assistant.
Google Pay and UCP: wallet payment inside Google’s agent surfaces
What UCP adds
Google Merchant Center Help defines UCP as an open protocol for programmatic exchange between an AI agent and a merchant backend through API, MCP or A2A. It supports commerce journeys including product discovery and checkout on Google AI Mode and Gemini. Google’s agentic-checkout guidance says Google Pay can use payment methods and shipping information already saved in Google Wallet, with payment information encrypted during agentic checkout.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Best fit
UCP is most relevant if your audience uses Google AI Mode or Gemini and you are prepared to expose product, availability, shipping and checkout capabilities through the required backend interfaces. Google Pay supplies the familiar wallet authorization; UCP supplies the agent-to-merchant communication.
Implementation outline
- Confirm that your business, country, products and checkout are eligible for the relevant Google agentic-checkout rollout.
- Model product discovery, inventory, pricing, shipping options, taxes, order creation, payment authorization and order status as server-side capabilities.
- Implement the UCP exchange using the API, MCP or A2A method required by your integration.
- Connect the Google Pay payment handler and ensure the backend validates the returned payment data with your processor.
- Require the agent to obtain a final, server-calculated total before asking the customer to approve payment.
- Return explicit states such as payment authorized, payment declined, inventory changed, address unavailable or fulfillment delayed so the assistant can recover accurately.
Trade-offs
UCP may reach more than a single website, but rollout and eligibility are not universal. You must account for Google surface reach, merchant API work and how much customer approval remains in the flow. Do not assume that a Google Wallet credential can be used outside the documented Google Pay handler or outside supported markets.
PayPal Braintree Agent Ready: a documented multi-assistant path
What is documented
PayPal Developer says Agent Ready helps Braintree merchants accept payments from AI shopping assistants across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini without building separate integrations for each. The documented routes are ACP with delegated payment tokens and UCP with a Google Pay payment handler through Braintree.

- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
Best fit
This is the clearest documented option for an existing Braintree merchant that wants several major assistant surfaces without implementing an independent connection for each one. It combines an assistant-facing protocol with payment processing and token handling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesQuestions to resolve before committing
- Is the program available to your legal entity, country and product category?
- Does your Braintree account meet underwriting and account requirements?
- Which ACP and UCP capabilities are enabled for your account?
- When and how does the customer approve a delegated payment token?
- How are refunds, disputes, shipping changes and failed fulfillment represented to the assistant?
- What commercial pricing and transaction terms apply? The public overview does not establish universal pricing or availability.
Implementation outline
- Ask Braintree or your account team to confirm Agent Ready eligibility and the supported assistant surfaces for your merchant account.
- Choose the ACP delegated-token path, the UCP Google Pay handler, or both, based on the assistants you need to reach.
- Expose authoritative product, price, inventory, shipping and order-status endpoints.
- Validate every delegated token on the server and bind it to the intended merchant, order amount and allowed time window.
- Keep fulfillment and refund decisions in your existing order system; do not let the assistant become the system of record.
- Test declines, token expiry, changed totals, duplicate submissions, partial refunds and customer cancellation before production release.
Keep Stripe without relying on Link alone
Delegated Checkout
Stripe’s agentic-commerce guidance describes Delegated Checkout as an embedded model in which an AI platform can present secure checkout while the merchant remains merchant of record. The agent can request product, shipping, fulfillment and payment options, while Stripe continues to support the merchant’s tax, fulfillment, refund and customer-service systems.
Shared Payment Tokens
Shared Payment Tokens let an agent use a customer’s preferred saved payment method without receiving the underlying credential. The token is scoped to a seller, amount and time window. This is useful when the merchant wants agent convenience with explicit limits rather than a reusable, unrestricted payment secret.
When this is the right choice
Choose these Stripe capabilities when you already depend on Stripe and need an embedded or assistant-native experience, but do not want to migrate processing, reconciliation or customer records. They are alternatives to a Link-only experience, not an independent processor that removes Stripe dependency.
Controls to require
- A clear customer approval event before a charge.
- Server-side checks that the seller, amount, currency and expiry match the order.
- Fraud screening and velocity limits appropriate to agent traffic.
- Idempotency for retries so an assistant cannot create duplicate charges.
- A visible way to cancel, change shipping or request a refund.
Machine payments for API and usage-based commerce
A consumer wallet is a poor fit when one service purchases a small amount of metered usage for every request or session. Stripe’s agentic-commerce material describes machine payments and stablecoin settlement as one model for programmatic purchases. The buyer and seller systems negotiate an amount, authorize within a defined policy and settle without a conventional cart.

Use this model when
- Charges are tied to API calls, compute, data or other measurable usage.
- Transactions are frequent and low-friction authorization is more important than a visual wallet sheet.
- The buyer is software with a pre-authorized budget or policy.
Do not use it blindly
Define spending limits, allowed vendors, currencies, dispute handling, service-level failures and audit logs before enabling autonomous payment. A machine-payment flow still needs identity, authorization, fraud controls, refund rules and a human escalation path.
Side-by-side comparison
| Option | Primary surfaces | Checkout model | Credential and consent | Merchant control | Main implementation burden |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Pay | Apple-device web checkout and supported browsers | Wallet handoff | User-authorized Apple Pay sheet | Existing cart, order and processor remain authoritative | Developer account, certificates, domain verification and provider integration |
| Google Pay with UCP | Google AI Mode and Gemini, plus supported Google Pay surfaces | Protocol-driven agent checkout with wallet payment | Google Wallet data used through an encrypted Google Pay flow; customer approval remains part of checkout | Merchant backend controls catalog, totals, fulfillment and orders | UCP API/MCP/A2A implementation, Google Pay handler and eligibility work |
| Braintree Agent Ready | ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, subject to account eligibility | ACP delegated tokens and/or UCP Google Pay handler | Delegated token or Google Pay authorization, subject to the enabled protocol | Braintree processing plus merchant order systems | Braintree account, underwriting, protocol integration and account approval |
| Stripe Delegated Checkout | Embedded AI interfaces that support the Stripe capability | Embedded delegated checkout | Secure, agent-requested approval; exact availability and controls depend on access | Stripe merchant-of-record workflows and merchant backend | Stripe API access, embedded UI integration and agent orchestration |
| Stripe Shared Payment Tokens | Agent flows that can use Stripe’s token capability | Scoped saved-payment authorization | Token limited to seller, amount and time window | Merchant retains payment, fulfillment and refund systems | Token lifecycle, server validation, consent and fraud controls |
| Machine payments | Custom software and API transactions | Machine-to-machine, per-request or per-session | Policy, budget or protocol authorization rather than a consumer wallet sheet | Contract and service systems must enforce usage and settlement rules | Protocol design, identity, budgets, metering, settlement and auditing |
There is no reliable universal ranking for transaction cost, conversion lift or geographic coverage. Those values depend on merchant country, currency, vertical, processor contract, customer device and enabled program. Obtain current terms for your account instead of treating any option as globally available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose for a real implementation
Choose by agent reach
List the surfaces that matter: your own website, Safari or other Apple-device browsers, Google AI Mode, Gemini, ChatGPT or a private assistant. Apple Pay addresses a wallet handoff; it does not automatically make your catalog callable by assistants. UCP and ACP address machine-readable commerce; they do not guarantee inclusion in every assistant.
Choose by consent policy
Decide whether every order requires an interactive approval, whether a saved token may cover a defined amount and time window, or whether an organization can pre-authorize a budget for software purchases. Document the maximum amount, currencies, merchants, expiration and revocation behavior.
Choose by system ownership
Your backend should remain the source of truth for inventory, price, tax, shipping promises, fulfillment, refunds and customer support. Prefer integrations that send an order identifier to the payment layer and receive a verified result, rather than allowing an assistant to calculate or finalize those values on its own.
Best Value
- An intuitive interface to easily accept payments and manage your sales.
- Strong, reliable Wi-Fi connection. Free SIM card and mobile data so you can process payments anywhere.
- Great battery capability with an additional charging station.
- A truly portable device. Stay in control of your business, wherever you go.
- Support when you need it. Get in touch with our US-based support through phone, email and chat.
Choose by operational capacity
A hosted provider path reduces protocol work but introduces account, underwriting and coverage dependencies. A direct UCP or embedded API integration gives more control but requires engineering for retries, schema changes, authentication, observability and incident response.
Security and reliability checklist
- Never expose raw credentials: use wallet authorization or scoped delegated tokens.
- Recalculate totals server-side: ignore client-supplied prices, shipping fees and tax totals.
- Bind authorization to an order: validate merchant, currency, amount, expiry and permitted fulfillment.
- Make retries idempotent: assistants may repeat a request after a timeout.
- Handle inventory races: return a structured change state and request approval for a new total.
- Log the decision: retain agent identity, customer approval, token scope, order ID and processor result.
- Provide recovery: support cancellation, refund, payment retry and human support without requiring the customer to repeat the entire conversation.
- Test adversarial prompts: an assistant must not change the seller, amount or recipient because of untrusted product text or a forged tool response.
Common failure modes and fixes
The wallet button appears only for some shoppers
Check device, browser, region, currency, merchant validation and domain verification. Wallet availability is conditional; do not promise it to every visitor. Offer a conventional card or bank-payment fallback.
The assistant shows a price that the checkout rejects
Make the merchant backend authoritative. Return a new quote with an expiration time, explain the changed inventory, tax or shipping value and request approval again before charging.
A delegated token is declined or expired
Verify token scope, seller binding, amount, currency and expiry. Ask for a new customer approval rather than repeatedly retrying an invalid token.
The order is charged twice after a timeout
Use an idempotency key tied to the merchant order ID, query payment status before retrying and make the assistant treat an unknown result as pending until the processor confirms it.
Protocol integration works in testing but not for customers
Recheck account eligibility, country, product vertical, rollout status and required assistant enrollment. Public documentation does not establish universal availability for these programs.
Recommended rollout sequence
- Start with a normal server-owned checkout: ensure pricing, inventory, shipping, tax, payment confirmation, refunds and support work without an agent.
- Add a wallet handoff: use Apple Pay or Google Pay where your audience and processor support them.
- Add structured commerce: expose authenticated product, quote, shipping and order-status operations for the target assistant protocol.
- Add scoped delegation: use delegated payment tokens only with strict amount, seller and time limits.
- Pilot narrowly: begin with low-risk products, conservative limits and explicit approval for every order.
- Measure operational outcomes: authorization rate, duplicate attempts, quote changes, fulfillment errors, refunds, support contacts and fraud—not just completed checkouts.
For most merchants, the practical answer is layered: Apple Pay or Google Pay for a familiar user-present wallet, a documented assistant integration such as Braintree Agent Ready when multi-surface reach is essential, and Stripe’s delegated or machine-payment capabilities when staying inside an existing Stripe architecture is more valuable than replacing Link. Verify current access, pricing, geography and underwriting for your exact business before selecting a production path.
